  1. Hello fellow HDTGM compatriots! Recently I had the honor of being a guest of one of my favorite podcasts, Hellbent for Horror. If you listen to the Wrong Reel podcast, you might have heard the host, S.A. Bradley, as a guest himself on that show. What I love about Hellbent is that Bradley really digs horror and what makes it special. Along with some very personal connections he has to the genre, he gets into the psychological, social, and cultural aspects of horror. There are times when he gets intimate and profound, times when he can get into the business/budget part of horror, and then there are times when he will do interviews from film festivals. It's pretty fantastic. Anyway, he invited me (John Arminio) and two other guests to appear on Hellbent for Horror's 50th episode, in which we talk about what makes a horror film a "classic," if a classic can still have an impact on audiences the way it did when it was first released, and what might be considered a "new classic." The new classics I chose to discuss were The Witch and Crimson Peak (ohhhhh, Guillermo ). I'd just really appreciate it if you Internet Denizens would give it a listen, since you are some of the smartest and most discerning (and polite!) movie-lovers on the interwebs. Thanks. https://hellbentforhorror.com/2017/08/14/episode-050-diamonds-and-rust-and-modern-horror/
  2. Trailer: https://www.youtube....bed/khoAYSvFnoA I'm kinda baffled by this movie. The production value is surprisingly good for a story that starts right away with a ghost sex scene, involves lust demons, back boobs, coffee fingering, penis impalement and cheesy acting. In some strange way, it reminded me of Verhoeven's Hollow Man in tone and the lopsided mix of horror and erotica. It's equal part Argento homage and old school horror schlock tribute. I feel it would be the kind of episode where they could even get the director of the movie. It's apparently a remake of an 80s film but this version is available on Netflix.
  3. Actually a title card does explain how this got made (profit motive), and it's intentionally bad, but still. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIcxow4TYbI&feature=player_detailpage#t=275s

    Ravenous (1999)

This isn't a bad movie, per se — I actually think it's fantastic — but it's astonishing how few people have even heard of a Donner Party-inspired period horror film starring that guy from Memento, that guy from Trainspotting, that guy from Minority Report, that guy from LOST, the principal from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and David Fucking Arquette. It's on Amazon Instant Streaming (for $2.99) and appears to be available on Netflix. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JO98NMMgp0Y
  5. Holy shit, tryin' to figure this one out is a real brain drainer. Definitely one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen, but also really entertaining. The plot is really hard to describe, plus that would ruin the fun of watching it. It's pretty much just non-stop WTF moments that I'm still trying to wrap my mind around. It's beautifully shot, and well directed. Vigo Mortensen turns in a pretty unsettling performance as well. The creepy kid in the lead does really well too. I would definitely recommend this one. You've got a vampire, a creepy kid, a pervy one-eyed sheriff, a still born fetus, self immolation, harpoons, and Viggo Mortensen. After seeing this, I've found it has a huge cult following, I'm surprised it hasn't been suggested yet. http://www.imdb.com/...ref_=fn_al_tt_1
  6. Boyz N the Hood meets Tales from the Crypt in this alternately horrific, funny, and socially conscious anthology film. The four grim vignettes are framed by the tale of three street hoods who break into Mr. Simm's inner-city funeral home to find a stash of drugs. The mortician puts them off, by telling them a few eerie stories about his "patrons." I won't lie I F****** love Clarence Williams III performance in this movie. Moments like ''-We shoot them real good with embaulming fluid mainly. You know it keeps them from *breathes in* smelling.'' or just ''The SHIT!?!?'' really makes you appreciate an actor of his caliber. The rest is pretty much straight up garbage and I loved it. Here is the whole movie, enjoy folks!

    Shanks (1974)

I just saw this movie, Shanks 1974, it's available on youtube. I can't believe this movie. The soundtrack is mostly Tubas and it stars the famous mime, Marcel Marceux. It's set up like a silent movie with title cards announcing each chapter. In the first title card, it says it's a "fairy tale". Marcel Marceux plays a child like marionette artist who is hired by an elderly scientist. The scientist is also played by Marcel, he is experimenting on reanimating dead bodies. He hires Marcel Marceux to advise him on where to place "electrodes" on the dead bodies to animate them. He animates a dead frog, and a chicken (which will later be used to kill one of the characters). Marcel shows up one day to find the scientist dead, and proceeds to reanimate him. The mime work in this movie is extraordinary. It's not a bad movie per say, I just don't get the tone at all and the content is fucking nuts. Is it horror? Is it vaudville? Is is a fairy tale? Is a black comedy? He uses little remotes to control the corpse. The mime has two shitty parent figures (he's adopted, or something?). They steal his paychecks from working with the old man, when the checks stop coming they get mad. Marcels "father" who is the town drunk, goes to the scientist's house, confronts the puppeteered corpse, gets attacked by the puppeteered dead chicken, falls down the stairs and dies. Marcel turns the drunk into a puppet and uses him to kill his "mother" by drawing her into the road in front of a car. Now he has her as a puppet too and uses them to entertain a 14-year girl. She is the 50 year old Marcel's love interest! Or she seems to be. I don't know. Here's a clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7s7RJhvl70 She gets raped to death later by a random biker gang who invade the house. What the fuck? Marcel tries to fight them off with the human puppets. He fails, they steal his remotes and play with the puppets by making them do weird contortions. This fucking movie..... you have to see it to believe it. Of course, he turns the dead girl into a puppet. They embrace at the end. Happy Ending? The full movie is on youtube and this site http://networkawesome.com/show/movie-shanks-1974/

    THE BROOD vs POSSESSION

Hey guys! Today I unintentionally watched two bizarre supernatural / horror movies about divorce, back to back: THE BROOD (David Cronenberg, 1979) and POSSESSION (Andrzej Zulawski, 1981). The styles are very different, The Brood is more clearly a B-movie, very cheaply made and with some campy elements, while Possession is more of an arthouse movie, but it's also campy in how hysterical and over the top it gets. Their point in common is that both movies deal with a family disintegrating (both movies show the wife as being the active agent of the separation) from a supernatural, creepy perspective, and they were both shot a couple of years apart.
  11. Before Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson made the most bat-shit crazy movie ever! It has all these crazy ideas in one movie with intentional hilariously bad dialogue. There's a kung fu priest who will "kick ass for the Lord". A mom whose bitten by a Rat Monkey at a zoo. A creative scene with a mutant baby in a stroller at a park. Living dead family members having dinner while their decomposing body parts are falling into their soup. And they are all corralled by the bumbling protagonist who tries to lead a normal life and keep them a secret from the love of his life(yes there's romance too). And just when you think this movie has shown it all (e.g. decapitations, zombie sex, talking intestines, zombie-o-lantern, and melting faces), it ramps up the finale showdown and it completely pays off! Best party movie ever! See it with a lot of people and be disgusted while laughing your asses off together!

    The Club (1994)

To use a tired cliche, I don't want to really tell you about 1994's "The Club" - it's best that you experience it for yourself. But here's the synopsis from IMDB: Time stops at midnight at the Senior Prom for five students, one murderous counselor, and John. They must find the courage to face themselves or, when time starts again, they may find that they are joining John's Club. All you have to do is commit murder... or suicide. I found this movie cruising Netflix, so it's available there, and boy am I glad I did. Do you want to see the future Executive Producer of Fringe doing an insane impression of Beetlejuice/Jack Nicholson/Ben Stiller as Tom Cruise? How about Scut Farkus from "A Christmas Story" turning into a demon mid-coitus? Also featuring Sons of Anarchy's Kim Coates in a tour-de-force performance and a plot that makes little to no sense. You may be thinking that it sounds like a typical 90s teen horror flick. But trust me, it is so much more. It's a strange brew of trying to be seriously scary but also funny... but fails on both levels. Here's the trailer. I think this movie would be absolutely awesome for HDTGM.

    The Pumpkin Karver

I found the podcast a few months ago and have not stopped listening. Right when I heard about it, The Pumpkin Karver popped into my head as a film that must be discussed at some point in an episode. Here's a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-mGxa-_85M Nothing I could say will do this atrocity justice. When I saw it for the first time, a friend of mine called me and asked if I was watching it on TV cause he just knew I would be. We proceeded to stay on the phone for the entire film just laughing and questioning everything about it. Highly recommended.
  15. NIGHT OF THE CREEPS Come for the bad 80s music, exploding heads and amazing bathroom stall graffiti and stay for the Return of Sexy Doctor! Yes, your Halloween 3 hero is alive, drunk and throwing zingers left and right as a hardboiled detective with a heart o' gold. I was thinking this would be your go-to Halloween choice but I am a bit late in submitting the idea. Do yourself a favor and watch it either way as it is pretty effin great. Cheers!

    Shivers (1975)

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0073705/ The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.
  17. I know everyone thinks they have found the holy grail of HDTGM movies, but guys...seriously... "Terror at London Bridge," a 1985 NBC Movie of the Week also known as "Bridge Across Time," stars David Hasselhoff. That should be enough to convince, but wait, there's more: "Terror at London Bridge" imagines that Jack the Ripper was being chased by Police in 19th century London and fell off the London Bridge to his death. Cut to 1985 and the bridge has been dismantled--DISMANTLED--and rebuilt in Arizona as a tourist attraction. The last stone from the London Bridge has been placed and when a tourist somehow pricks her finger and falls dramatically on that last stone, it resurrects Jack the Ripper, who goes back to his old rippin' ways. The only cop who is brilliant/insane enough to actually suspect that Jack the Ripper is back from his watery grave is David Hasselhoff. It also stars someone named Stepfanie. "Terror at London Bridge" is on Amazon Prime for free, as well as Daily Motion. I feel SO strongly about this movie. I heard it mentioned on "Stuff You Should Know" and couldn't watch it soon enough. It is a gold mine.

    Dead Silence

This movie, about puppets. Or some lady who turned people into puppets? And some dude trying to figure out why his wife died? I'm not 100% clear what it was supposed to be about. And the way the characters talk, it's like robots. It's horrible. Jason would lose his mind at the ending. And especially Donnie Wahlberg shaving in his first two scenes. It's ridiculous.

    The Creeps (1997)

Oh man; this is madness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4Z7SE2l1VA From IMDB: "Mad scientist brings Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and Frankenstein's Monster to life... but there's a problem and they end up three feet tall." It's sort of like Monster Squad, but with little people. That's all. From the weird stretch of time from the 80's-to-90's where people made movies like Garbage Pail Kids and Leprechaun. I just like that this WAS A MOVIE! Someone pitched, "Let's do monsters with dwarves!", and it got greenlit! You could not do that nowadays. That's bonkers!
  21. Before I delve into Silent Hill: Revelation, I'd like to state that I actually really like the first Silent Hill movie. I like the game series, and while it was a bit wonky with the dialogue and delivery I felt Silent Hill (2006) has a cool visual style and some genuinely cringe-worthy horror moments. Silent Hill: Revelation takes what positive elements exist in its predecessor and wipes its ass with them. Not only is it a terrible, terrible movie in its own right it also takes the time to completely fuck over the movie that came before it by basically retconning events and ignoring basically the entire ending to tell its own weird and confusing tale. I don't understand what is wrong with Kit Harrington, aside from Game of Thrones and How to Train Your Dragon 2 he has done Pompeii (no) and this movie (double no). Basically it follows the first film -- Sean Bean and his daughter are constantly on the move because dark forces are trying to draw her back to Silent Hill for dark purposes. Except that... (SPOILER ALERT) His daughter ended up being pretty much dead/not a real person at the end of the first movie. She was a manifestation of the "good" part of Alessa, the tortured character behind the demonic machinations of Silent Hill. Both the mother and daughter return to their home, to find themselves still a part of the ghostly afterlife while Sean Bean lives on. So basically Revelation says says "fuck that" and makes the daughter alive and a real person, and goes as far as to re-do a stupid scene where the dead mom talks to her husband from the ghost world using some Mortal Kombat Annihilation-level of visual effects. Aside from that, the effects are really bad. This movie was made in 2012, and 1) it looks worse than the first Silent Hill, 2) it looks worse than the recent video game iterations, 3) it looks like someone really liked the Resident Evil series of movies and based the visual style of this movie on those. Nothing makes sense in it, you will often times pause to exclaim aloud "THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE". It also has Malcolm McDowell in it for like 3 minutes, and they say the word "Facebook" four times. The only thing is you sort of have to watch the first movie to really understand how shitty this one is. Like Mortal Kombat and Annihilation. Edit: Oh yeah, also, they straight-up use footage from the first movie to supplement scenes in this one. They also use footage in this movie out of sheer laziness, like a birds-eye video of a car on a winding road -- this was ripped straight from the first Silent Hill.

    Stitches

For a sharknado type movie: This movie involves a drunken horny clown getting killed at a kids birthday party and then coming back from the dead to exact revenge on the kids who "wronged" him. Features a dick being pulled off by a clown and intestines being turned into a balloon animal. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2126362/?ref_=nv_sr_2
  23. This movie was one of those "well we have extra time and since it's a local production it will bring people in..." picks at a festival I attended last year. It was so awful that no one who wasn't involved in production managed to not make SOME comment about how nutters it was by the time it ended (and most of the people I knew in attendance were trying really hard to be respectful of the cast and crew since they were all there but... Ugh) I wouldn't be suggesting it at all except for the fact that it very inexplicably managed to get distribution. Strong enough distribution that I saw an ad for it on a bus downtown couple weeks ago. (ETA I mean on the OUTSIDE of a bus, not the cheap ads inside. The ones drivers, pedestrians, and the rest of the world have to see) The movie is about some girl whose brother is accused of murder (and is blind for some reason) who has to come to LA to see him and somehow the ghost of the Black Dahlia is attached to her and the guy who murdered her possesses a doctor and something about a knife buried in a cave probably in Griffith Park and self inflicted abortions in bathtubs IN COCKTAIL DRESSES and... Well I can't honestly tell you what it's about because I never figured it out BUT there's ghosts and presumably possession and flashbacks and blind people and abortions and a tour of all of LA in one day and mental wards. Also, the guy who is in that Monster Man SyFy reality show is in it. I can't find any conversations about it so I don't believe it has yet been suggested (i apologize if it has). I tried to recommend it at For Your Inconsideration but despite the fact that it IS listed on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB the site couldn't find it (I'm assuming I'm missing something and that may have to do with the fact that I'm on my phone) I'm including links to both the Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB pages as well as the trailer. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_black_dahlia_haunting/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2359347/?mode=desktop (read the reviews) I trust you will all see precisely what I mean.

    Skinner

Skinner (1993) A decent-looking lad called Dennis Skinner rents an apartment in a couple's house, Kerry and Geoff. At night he roams the streets with a goodie-bag filled with knives looking for victims to skin, constantly followed by the hobbling, wobbling junkie Heidi who was mutilated by him and is now looking for revenge. Dennis is attracted to Kerry and wants to show her the real him. Starring Ted Raimi Ricki Lake (The talk show lady) Traci Lords (A former porn star) David Worshofski Writer Paul Hart-Wilden (who has written 2 horror shorts, 1 feature horror (Skinner), 1 feature thriller, and another screenplay that has yet to become a movie in his film career since 1989!) Director Ivan Nagy (he's done directing for a bunch of tv movies and some porn) This has all of the ingredients to be made fun of. Cemetery Man

This is one of my favorite zombie movies. I had it on vhs when I was in highschool and watched it all the time because it had zombies, a really hot naked chick, and some really bizarre moments that I found hilarious. I rented it thinking it was going to be a straight forward horror movie but it just gets progressively weirder and surreal. Movies like this kinda make me miss the days of renting movies with not much to go on besides the front and back of the cover. I feel like it's rare now to go into a movie with no idea what to expect. I like this movie, I think it's a good movie, but I think there's enough crazy for them to talk about in an episode. If nothing else though I just want to recommend it to people who haven't seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-GpYY6f2o
