Both on FYI and the Bad Movie Recommendations forum, it's starting to seem like people are racing to see who can be the most hipster-blasé, with recommendations like The Avengers, or Iron Man 3, or R.I.P.D. two months before its release.

 

That's why I will remain reserved until The Canyons is actually in theaters.

Personally, if I had to suggest a way to police the tags, I'd say have a sort of voting system for them. If, say, three people add a tag, then it goes on; or, have the tags set up so that multiple people can submit it, and the more people vote on one tag, the higher it gets on a list of tags individual to each movie. Or have a way to say "this tag isn't applicable," and it goes into a section where people can vote on whether or not it should stay. None of these systems seems perfect; they all seem like people could still abuse them, and they all sound like they'd involve a lot of work, but I felt like sharing.

I think sillstaw has some good ideas regarding tags, especially requiring a certain number of people selecting a tag in order for it to stay up.

I also think just putting a disclaimer telling people to make sure the tag they're adding makes sense because the tags will make it easier to create future theme based polls would help.

 

I think the latter would be the easiest way to keep the tagging situation under control. Maybe I'm giving these people too much credit, but I think they're adding unnecessary tags because they just don't realize how useful they are to you guys in sorting through the movies to create polls.

A little of both. We will probably use garbage can ratings to narrow down movie choices to be included in the polls.

Yes, as I was sort of explaining earlier in the thread, you don't have to think of it as bad (5) vs good (1) since not all HDTGM movies are "bad" Think of it more as appropriate for the show (5) vs not right for the show (1)

I'm an old man and I'm sure this is a problem with my settings, so can one of you whippersnappers tell me reason that I can't access the "Browse Recommendations" section (I get a "Site Temporarily Unavailable" notice) and when I pull up recently added movie it won't let me rate it?

We're aware of the issue. We've received so many recommendations that the server-side table generation always times out. We should have a fix to push by the end of the holiday weekend. Also, improvements to the tagging system! Also, a new voting poll!

is it me or is the voting site seem broken. the movies on the list doesn't ever go up or down in numbers. You would think they should have some fluctuation but it's been a week and the same group of movies are listed, on the cast your vote side of the page.

 

The recommend a film part doesn't work at all too for me, in firefox. if I add a movie it doesn't get added or ever show up, just a spinning wheel of death. OHH well but thats been pointed out.

With how long the poll has been up and since you can only vote for each movie once I would imagine anybody who has any interest in voting already has. With that being said The Happening was under 2100 last time I checked a week ago and is now over 2100 so votes are still being added, just more of a trickle now until they put a new group of 10 movies up.
