Episode 99 — A View To a Kill: LIVE

Funny episode - but everyone fighting and yelling to finish their bits over everyone else kind of gives me a headache.

Wait wait wait

Y'all went the entire episode without mentioning the fact that James thought he could stop them from getting into that Authorized Personnel Only room by locking a simple chain lock?! And then Zorin puts his hand through the space and just starts shooting at everything?! I mean thank GOD James Bond locked that door! Who knows how easier it would have been for Zorin to start shooting at them!

Seriously though that damn lock gave me and my roommate the best laugh in a long time!

Also I think the very literal imagery used for the opening credits did me in (after the snowboarding and dick submarine obviously). Of course if Duran Duran sings about someone getting chilled the girl needs to have neon snowflakes painted onto her!

I love how Jason keeps pronouncing Gourley as "Girly."

Is he doing this on purpose or does he not know how to say it? Either way he needs to apologize in the form of a guest appearance on Superego....

I love the amount of discussion about the butterfly act! I must re-watch this yet again with a new appreciation for it!

Regarding the name "Jenny Flex". It's a play on the word "Genuflection", which is to have one or both knees on the ground. So, it's a really poor attempt at saying "She's gonna suck your dick".

Did anyone else find it odd that while the film EVENTUALLY made its way to California, they blew their "California Girls" load pretty randomly during the opening sequence is Russia? Was the music with the snowboarding stuff supposed to make you think of surfing?

Especially when you consider "California Girls" isn't even about surfing, so it even makes less sense. They might as well played "God Only Knows."

I thought about this as well! Was it their way of showing us some really awful foreshadowing? Or letting us in on Bond's thoughts while he was snowboarding away from the Russians? I mean I guess in that scenario we would all wish they had been California girls.

When you look at Max Zorin's portfolio, and how diverse it is. It's not really out of the realm of possibility in the grand scheme of things.

Look at Alan Sugar, who has owned businesses in IT, Home Computers, a Football Team, Private Air Travel, electronic advertising screens, investments and TV distribution as well as being the star of the UK version of The Apprentice.

Or Richard Branson, who has had businesses in public travel, record stores, space travel, TV distribution, Telecommunications, Cosmetics, Radio Stations, Energy Services, Car Sales, a Stem Cell Bank, a short lived Formula One team and a brand of Cola, and that's not even half of it.

Longtime listener, first-time poster. Correction:

Throughout the lengthy butterfly discussion, someone/everyone seemed to suggest that the Eiffel Tower restaurant, as such, did not exist. However:

There have almost ALWAYS been a restaurants in the Eiffel Tower, and it has a long tradition as a fashionable dining destination throughout the twentieth century. Everyone from Picasso to Charlie Chaplin to Hitler ate there. The original restaurant was dismantled in 1981 as part of a major renovation, and was subsequently moved to New Orleans (for some reason), where it remained open for over twenty years.

Shortly thereafter, le Jules Verne opened in 1983 on the second floor of the tower. Incidentally, around the time this movie was filmed, my father had his wallet stolen by a pickpocket on his way up to this very restaurant. I can't swear that the decor as depicted in the movie is 100% accurate myself, but the concept (and Bond's lunch there) are very reasonable.

le Jules Verne remains open today (renovated extensively in 2007) and is headed by internationally renowned chef Alain Ducasse.

Other than that, I loved the crossover episode. As a huge Bond fan who (mostly) hates this movie, I'll definitely have to check out James Bonding.

Excluding the 1967 Casino Royale which has a rating of 27%, A View to a Kill is the lowest-rated official 007 movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a 36% rating. It was also the first Bond film to get a Razzie nomination, which was Worst Actress for Tanya Roberts, who lost to Linda Blair for Night Patrol, Savage Island and Savage Streets.

For me one of the biggest parts of the whole Bond thing are the (highly variable in quality) tie in video games, with Goldeneye obviously coming in up top, and the Tomb Raider knock off The World is Not Enough probably being the worst. So I thought there was an NES game since it was the mid 80's, but apparently I made that up. On the other hand there is a Commodore 64 one that looks stiffer than Rodger Moore.

There was a great conversation about the fire truck chase scene, but what didn't get covered was its climax. In order to escape the police chasing them, Bond tells Stacey to gun it for the draw bridge that's raising up. We see the fire truck speed onto the bridge and begin to rise up the ramp, but then it cuts to the police cruisers trying and failing to do the same thing. We never get to see what should have been the coolest part....an enormous ladder truck launching out into space and crashing back down on the bridge on the far side with Stacey expertly maintaining control.

Speaking of the fire truck scene, here's an interesting fact from IMDB:

The Remy-Julienne Stunt Team from France did many of the stunts in this movie, but in the San Francisco segment, a scene in which Roger Moore was supposed to be driving a fire truck, the stunt driver was too short to reach the pedals and properly operate the truck. There wasn't much time to 'rig' the truck so Moore volunteered to drive it himself, quite expertly as noted by the local San Francisco Teamsters. Moore claims he was a lorry driver among other things before his acting paid the bills.

BOND: "Find anything?"

STACEY: "Yes, I think I have..."

"...this huge piece of map-furniture taking up most of the small room we're currently standing in. I found this three feet away from you."

Pro tip: If any of you have not had hot, passionate sex while listening to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake you are missing out on a truly transcendent experience. Personally however, I think performing oral sex to "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" just edges it out. What I'm saying is, everyone should go home tonight, mix it up, show some class, and do it to some classical music. Just remember, you have to commit. Let the music move you.

Oh, and I also have an Old Man Bond Alert.

Just after he has sex with the KGB agent and he is listening to the tape, he actually writes down on a post-it note: SILICON VALLEY IN THREE DAYS MAINSTRIKE.

Are we to believe that Bond can't remember three simple details without writing them down?

I don't think I've ever gotten so many laughs out of HDTGM, not even during No Holds Barred. Between the Monkey Shines callback from Jason and Paul ("As long as the butterflies are credited properly") to the fire truck discussion, to the bit about the contractors who make the map tables...
