Am I really dumb (no U.S listerners)

Recommended Posts

Having listerned to the show for ages I realised something. So often I'm watching a film and see something off and just think 'oh that what they do in America' Like the ball in the 'Junior' episode, I just saw it and thought 'oh US drug companies must have that kind of event for their buyers'

Am I the only person who do this.

Yes definitely. Though I sometimes also do the opposite, where I assume something is just a movie trope, and then it turns out to actually exist in the US.

here is a better example, those Chinese food containers. I have never seen Chinese food restaurants use them here. the little square boxs you see everyone eating out of in movies yet never get delivered in. mostly because of food poisoning. little paper box's can't keep the food temperature worth a shit so most places just aluminum trays. but it's a nice dream, btw some places do use them but not many for good reason.

I don't know about throwing balls, but they definitely do basically put on corporate pep rallies, and I'm sure there are all sorts of events surrounding that. In fact, in the very first film that I ever worked on, the Jake Gyllenhaal movie "Love and Other Drugs", I was a Pfizer trainee in a lot of training scenes and was in the crowd during the big introduction, where we had to listen to Macarena about a million times. You see, the movie takes place in 1996-1997 when Viagra was becoming a thing.

I remember reading something about how after Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon became such a huge hit in America, there was an entire generation of children who grew up believing that asian people were capable of flight.

I can't speak on a lot of the country but I've lived in several different states and the old school paper boxes are pretty rare in the states these days. Most places use plastic containers or aluminum like you said.

Ok, the rest of these were fun but as an American I have to say go fuck yourself. We're dumb but not that dumb.

I DID used to joke around with my ex-girlfriend a lot though about things like that. For instance, she'd say something like "Now you better not ever make me angry, because we all know kung-fu", to which I'd respond with something along the lines of "But you're Korean", to which she'd respond "Because we ALL know kung-fu".

She was also a terrible driver, but we agreed that it was less because she was Asian, and more because she was a woman.

I've only lived in the 3 west coast states, but every Chinese food place I've gotten take out from, or had delivered, was in those boxes. I didn't know it was done differently.

My rice always comes in this. The rest is in a plastic or foil container.

I'm correct in assuming that every Chinese takeout place in the country has the exact same pictures on their menu boards, right? They look like they were all shot in 1973.

The movie industry thinks you are, though. I remember finding a copy of Millions (Danny Boyle) in Blockbuster soon after moving to the States. Apparently y'all would be so confused about those weird pieces of paper with the old lady on them in a film called Millions, they had to throw some dollars in the mix. This was also presumably designed to trick those Americans who staunchly refuse to consume foreign films, kinda like when trailers for non-English speaking films have zero dialogue and lots of whacky hijinx.

To respond to the OP, I do this kind of thing all the time. The first half of my life was spent rabidly consuming films in England/Wales; the second half was spent in the southern States (still rabidly consuming films). I learned a lot. Many of my understandings of films and the USA as a whole were altered. A big one was frat parties. I didn't think frat parties were really as epic and raucous as they pretended in the movies. Then I attended one...

In NYC delivery is on bikes, and some of them use scooters, so yes that is a real thing.

I've lived in New Jersey and now New York, I've always gotten rice in these containers, though they are usually plain white. In new Jersey, most of the food came in them as well, though in NYC they are mostly plastic or metal trays.

You guys and your fancy aluminum and plastic containers... all the Chinese food I have ever gotten here in The Middle (previously Chicago, now Omaha) either came in the boxes pictured or good, old-fashioned environment-hating styrofoam. Midwestern values, guys.

Here is another classic American movie trick, is it real or what. a beer in a brown paper bag. Most of my life growing up i had never seen beer cans in brown paper bags, like in movies like repoman. but I had always thought this was done so they didn't have to pay a beverage company any money for product placement and most likely it's done for just that. also to get the films movie rating down, so it's not so clear they are drinking beer.

I didn't think this was real until I had gone to New Orleans for the first time. it's better explained on the tv show

".why this is done. but it's funny because everyone who's a tourist walks around with a open beer or delicious daiquiri or as I call them a slurpee cup full of booze, that's really what they are. everyone walks around not knowing that this is illegal. yet the police don't do anything about it unless your really getting out of hand. Yet the locals who are often trade workers from the hotels at night goto the local corner store and drink 99c millers from you guest it brown paper bag.

Not sure about the white takeaway boxes. But we (in Australia) definitely have pizzas delivered by scooter (although most of them are by car). and definitely have alcohol in brown paper bags (especially long necks), I think it's something to do with liquor laws and not being allowed to have open alcohol on the streets?
