EPISODE 123.5 - MINISODE 123.5

Recommended Posts

Oh, also, I just listened to the minisode (when they come out over the weekend, I usually wait on them until my Monday commute), and I just want to point out Jason's take on Star Wars: "Jedi is a real miss for me."

I'm just going to assume he means because of the Ewoks (aka: the proto-Gungans) and take that to mean that I was empirically right and taylorannephoto was wrong.

Jedi had nothing on the TV movies though. NOTHING...

In the early 90s, I was all Chicago Bulls sweatpants, then heavy metal t-shirts, and comic book characters that were not long for this Earth...

It certainly is, and I'll be damned if it isn't one of the mid-90s-iest things ever. That said, I still got like 25 bucks for that shirt on E-Bay many years later...

God, what a shitty, shitty story-line and character. I'm actually amazed that Funko Pop hasn't tried making a figurine for that character as they sometimes get some pretty deep pulls for who they select.

But, he had a DYNAMIC NEW COSTUME!

With those ankle pouches I would have thought Rob Liefeld created him but I was pleasantly surprised that he had no part in that characters creation.

I was into a lot of crappy stuff at the right time. Before Marvel started reprinting absolutely everything, I was able to E-Bay off the entire Clone Saga off for a pretty nice chunk of change. Aside from having mostly good art, much of the Mid-90s through 2000 era of Spider-Man is kind of unreadable now, and don't get me started on early 90s X-Men, which was really popular at the time and made sense when I read all 18 books that came out in any given month....

In the recent Duggan/Posehn run of Deadpool there was a bit where he had a flashback in the 90s about his final test for Weapon X and it perfectly encapsulated the X-Tremeness of 90s comics.

God. Remember when they had to put fucking maps to tell you which comics you were supposed to read for the story? It was near the end of Claremont's time on X-Men. But that was also a Marvel-wide problem. Remember the Inferno crossover? What a giant clusterfuck.

Marvel still has that problem, just not as bad. It's especially bad with their release for paperbacks and graphic novels, especially centering around their big crossover stories. They released Original Sin a year or so back, but they were still releasing tie-ins for their other series' almost a year past its release. Now with Secret Wars a bunch of the tie-in books are coming out in the next month or so but the actual main Secret Wars book isn't coming out until March I believe. This is also getting mixed in with the new reboot of reboot series that they are constantly doing to where it is a colossal clusterfuck of trying to know when shit is coming out and what order it's supposed to be read in.

The other problem Marvel still has is that it creates so many different iterations of teams. There are the Avengers, the New Avengers, A-Force, Uncanny Avengers Secret Avengers and then there's X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Force, etc. Garth Ennis made fun of it in The Boys with there being a team of superheroes who are constantly adding newer and newer teams much to the chagrin of every other superhero in the country.

It was completely terrible in 1995-96 though, because in addition to the regular monthly titles, there were various specials and one-shots that ultimately added nothing. Like, you could buy an issue of Amazing Spider-Man one month that would be part 3 of one story, but then the next issue would already be part 5 of ANOTHER arc.

I gave up entirely on following the regular Marvel titles a few years back, with Fear Itself maybe being the last big crossover that I paid much attention to, which was awful. I picked up Avengers Vs. X-Men as it came out the next year without having kept up with the times, and it was easy enough to follow, but I've since abandoned the regular Marvel U aside from stuff like Fraction's Hawkeye or other pretty self-contained things. You couldn't pay me to even START giving a shit about whatever's going on at DC.

DC is actually pretty good about being contained and then getting things out on time, and if they do a crossover they release a singular book that has all of the various issues involved together if a person only wants to read that story or they can read the individual series if they just want those. There was another mini-crossover for the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy called the Black Vortex that was confusing as shit because even in the collected story it bounced around and tried to keep everything together and was only just making it more confusing. Marvel's other huge problem is that they keep rebooting and starting over, just so that they can have numerous number 1 issues, it's gotten so bad that they are making fun of it in Marvel comics themselves.

Totally. I've always been a fan of how DC does their crossovers. Blackest Night is a great example. You can get the full story just from reading the trade paperback that collected the main title. Then if you want to know how the ongoing stories in the various Lantern Corps tied into it, you can also get those and read more. I mean, it's a way to get you to buy six different trades instead of one, but if you don't care and just want the main story, you can totally get that, and it's not crazy and confusing.

AvX was the last Marvel one I tried to read. It was fucking chaos, and the story was terrible. By the end, I was just buying the title that only had the fight matchups (mostly so I could nerd rage about how wrong I thought they were).

Trust me the day is going to come when you guys are going to look back at the 90s as the best of times. I look back at the 90s like Christopher Lambert with a brandy glass.

1990 was a very good year, it was the birth age of the mainstream computers networks. people could download porn at very highspeeds with out having to wear a silly gray trench coat in a adult video store. You could buy movies on laserdisc and enjoy them in full widescreen the way the director had solely intended. beavis and butthead was on tv and people just loved a band called

AvX makes sense I believe if you know the backstory, which I didn't the first time I read it so I had no idea why Cyclops was such a colossal asshole. Loved Blackest Night since it was basically a zombie story using huge characters from DC's past. Also DC has nothing on Marvel and bilking readers out of money using countless tie-ins. I'm going to slowly purchase the ones that I want for Secret Wars but they have nearly FORTY tie-in books for that storyline.

Yeah, it drove me nuts with Marvel re-starting their numbering whenever the hell they felt like it, like how it would affect some books, but not others, which themselves would get revamped the next year anyway. I think it's most frustrating now, because comics themselves are probably the LEAST important thing that Marvel has going on. They're so far ahead of the game and making BILLIONS on their movies and other merchandise that they could stop publishing individual comic books tomorrow and they'd still be set for life. That's not to say that they should go away entirely, but I'd be more inclined to buy a single yearly volume of Avengers or something if it was presented as new material, kind of like they're sort of doing with their Netflix TV shows.

Oh Hackers. Like I needed an excuse to see this movie for like the hundredth time.

Funny story maybe for only me but years ago a friend and I were talking about this movie. He brought up how much he loved the movie and how the music really got him electronica music. I couldn't remember the music at all when he starts to sing it remind me. He then proceeds to start singing the Mortal Kombat music but in place of shouting "Mortal Kombat" proceeds to shout "hack the planet." When I told him that was the Mortal Kombat music he was confused and then called for his girlfriend to come in. He started doing it again and when it came time to shout he pointed at her and she too said "hack the planet." Every time I watch Hackers now I am confused why the Mortal Kombat music is not in it.

This soundtrack is awesome, its actually out of print now and a collectors item. I was introduced to electronic music from this movie: Kruder Dorfmeister, Orbital, Underworld, Prodigy, Massive Attack...sigh

The worst people are the ones who complain about the hacking "visuals" in the movie, what , because you want to watch 90 minutes of people typing code? Plus if you watch the bonus featurette in the 20th anniversary blu-ray you see just how much work went into this movie, especially the art direction of those visuals scenes. The writer went to 2600 meetings and talked to a bunch of hackers in NYC to get stuff right. Yes the people portraying hackers are ridiculously beautiful, but at least they are pale and fairly skinny freaks. Plus who didn't want a Cyberdelia type place to hang out as a teenager?!

Clearly I am too close to this movie. I'll just be plugging my ears and closing my eyes until next weeks ep.

This episode is going to suck because there is NOTHING wrong with this movie. It is FLAWLESS and a cyberpunk classic. How dare you sirs and ma'am!

I'm not going to commit to reading everything in the canon but I do like reading a good comic book series now and again (got some of the classic Daredevil story collections on my wishlist). I tried some New Avengers storylines but got hopelessly confused by the constant references to other events that weren't in the collection I was reading.

Any recommendations for good self-contained collections I could read from the Marvel universe? Any character(s), any era. Also DC actually, I'm guilty of not looking past Batman when it comes to their stable.

In a completely unrelated topic, I think there are people out there who redraw action pictures from DC and Marvel comics with male characters in the poses that are normally drawn for the female ones. It leads to some preposterous poses and suggestion butt action and is a very witty way of showing how the depiction of male and female characters differs.
