EPISODE 126 - The Star Wars Holiday Special

Recommended Posts

Now I want to see Cameron's game suggestion from the minisode thread become a reality, because these are amazing.

If only there were people involved with this show that were into football-related comedy...

I am sure most of you have seen this but it still is the holidays and all.

I wish someone could create a George Lucas fireplace and in it, George has a box full of star wars holiday special dvd's/tapes and films and he is slowly throwing them into a fireplace. BTW the germ of that idea of a fireplace on tv came from my local cable company Shaw, Your welcome. they created that originally and was even talked about on the daily show once.

at one point they even threatened to pull it down and charge people money to watch it on pay per view.

The Shaw Fire Log: The mysterious hand has been stoking the fire since 1986

at one point in time some one created a money throwing fireplace with a guy slowly burning money in it. I can't find that one but I do remember seeing it.

Oh, I'm full of 'em! My favorite story idea that I've had kicking around in my head though is a dark inspirational sports comedy about a poor African villager that dreams of going to America to play football for his favorite team, the 4-time consecutive NFL Super Bowl Champion Buffalo Bills. Once there, he'll learn the hard truth behind all the t-shirts he'd received as a child in the early 90s before ultimately helping the Bills get to the Super Bowl again, only to lose once more. It will be a moral victory though, as the final scene will be his friends and loved ones back home receiving a case of Super Bowl Champion Buffalo Bills merchandise with his face all over it. BAM. Where's my three-picture deal with Disney?

Okay ... I realize this is probably detracting from people wanting to talk Star Wars Holiday Special now, but I really want to just see a thread full of these. This is gold. I could read these all day.

Re: People Making Cars For People -- I grew up in Michigan in the 80s, so a lot of the scuttlebutt I heard from adults was about (in Michigan) robots replacing humans on the assembly line at the auto plants. Those commercials were targeted towards people that wanted to make sure they were buying a quality product that had the care of human hands (and the conscientiousness factor of ensuring that autoworkers kept their jobs.) It sounds ridiculous out of context, but as opposed to Robots Making Cars For People....

(This was also touched on by Mr. Show early on, in the PitPat sketch: John Ennis' character's great-great-grandfather had a slaving business whose slogan was "People Selling People To People.")

That's one of my favorite Mr Show sketches, and I had never put those two things together until they played the ad during the episode.

Trust me, this isn't detracting from shit.

I would just like to say thank you to everyone for not spoiling The Force Awakens. That was really awesome. I just got back from the theater, and unfortunately, this was pretty much my reaction to it as I left...

No shit, I think I liked the Holiday Special more. I'm going to see it again this week, but it just didn't really do it for me--at least, not as a Star Wars movie.

And I really don't want to be a Negative Nancy, but in my honest opinion, Guardians of the Galaxy and Tales From the Borderlands do Star Wars better than the Force Awakens.

"Lee-ah"? Luke's tie fighter? Paul's geek cred officially busted.

No that's right, everything Paul Scheer says is cannon.

He did have his own imperial shuttle too. ;)

he also had his own full set of Darth Vader gear or did he just dream that i am not sure.

To be fair, I think that's how her name is pronounced in the original trailer for the first film. It's kind of funny, because I think some other names are a little off too. The whole thing sounds like it was done in one take by a guy that doesn't understand this space gobbledy-gook that would rather get back to his cigarette.

I'd just like to point out that this would suggest Paul would have to have watched the original trailer for Star Wars and then missed every reference to Princess Leia in the ensuing 35 years. Good for him, he's a busy man =P And good for spellcheck for knowing the proper spelling of "Leia".

Now we should figure out why he pronounces Mario as "Marry-o."

lets not talk about the force awakens ok...

you guys want to see something that will blow your minds?

The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) -rotton tomatos score

Cameron H. but it's no Bird On A Wire right?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P6Qq3YCIjA

Oh my god! Bird on A Wire was filmed in my home town, or parts were, and my mother was obsessed with Mel Gibson at the time. She was so eager to run into him in town and would bring it up all the time. I've never seen the movie, but every time I think of it I just hear my mother in my head saying "Maybe I'll ask him if they'll ever do another Lethal Weapon movie."

You'll all be relieved to know that I may have "thunk" my way into enjoying The Force Awakens. I'm going to see it again tomorrow, with a theory that I've heard in mind, and I think it's going to turn the whole thing around for me.

And, to be clear, I liked a lot of it. The new characters were great--it was the "not so new" stuff I had a problem with.

Is it the theory about

Finn and Poe's love story?

I agree. It's not perfect still better than the prequels though. All I know is when I left the theater I was jazzed to go see Episode VIII.

Also does this new theory have to do with anti-First Order propaganda by any chance?

I have a theory about the relationship between Art Carney and Itchy. I feel that they're friendship sprung out of a sex club for humans who are sexually attracted to Wookiees and vice versa. This is evidenced by the fact that Art Carney chooses to live on Kashyyk and tries to get a very awkward kiss out of Chewbacca's wife. It would also explain why he brought a pornographic hologram for Itchy (as if he brings them all the time) and why Itchy was so attracted to a human woman (shouldn't it have been a Wookiee)?

LOL--no, but I'd love to see another Holiday Special with these characters and Lumpy's triumphant return!

I watched The Phantom Edit yesterday (I think Lando had brought it up in the mini-sode thread), and while it can't fix issues like poor acting and bad dialog, it makes for a much more coherent story. If you are ever going to re-visit those movies, I highly recommend it.

Honestly, I'm not going to get into my theory here, since I'm not sure if a speculation that turns out to be true for a movie that hasn't been filmed yet can be considered a spoiler. Suffice it to say, I didn't come up with it, so the question is already out there. Moreover, I'm sure a lot of you already came to the same conclusion on your own and I'm just the dumb-dumb playing catch up. Oddly, in retrospect, I kind of wish I had read some of the spoiler filled reviews before going to see it. I think my expectations would have been better met knowing exactly what I was in store for story-wise. A big reason why I'm going to go again tomorrow is that one of these reviewers basically said all the same things I was thinking, but updated it to say he saw it a second time, with a less critical eye, and liked it more. I'm hoping I'll feel the same way.

(****FOR REAL SPOILER***Don't reveal unless you've seen the movie or just don't give a shit.)

When I left the theater I was thinking...

Shit man, just take it from her. Her arm's got to be getting tired.

I'm with you! Although I'm shipping specifically for either Finn/Poe or Finn/Poe/Rey. Rey/Finn or Rey/Poe doesn't really do it for me? Rey don't need no man!

Also, it's amazing how consistent Paul has been this year with HDTGM releases. I mean, with him fighting crime in Miami with Ant-Man and all!!!!

What the hell, Scheer? Why do you get to be so fucking cool? :)
