Episode 132 - Bloodsport: LIVE!

So does that mean that Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to have an American accent when he hits 70?

I've actually heard that he has to have a vocal coach in order to keep up his trademark accent because he's lived here so long.

Also, how the fuck do I keep making replies that start a new page...sheesh.

Did anyone feel uncomfortable with Nicole calling the black fighters "monkey's"? Come on girl, that's just not right... and she is black herself, she should know better.

I do not presume to tell black people what language they should or should not use to make me (a white person) feel more comfortable.

Yeah I've heard that too, which wouldn't surprise me. It almost makes me wonder if this is his real voice now:

To continue our discussion from the min-sode thread...

I finished Season 2 of Daredevil last night. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if I like it more than the first season, but I felt it was really good.

That being said...

Karen's article, "What is it, to be a hero?" was dumb as fuuuuuuuuuck. I had to cover my eyes to prevent them from rolling completely out of my skull.

Also, I really would have preferred Frank to have been in on the plan at the end, rather than just show up Deus Ex Machine Gun.

I think I like this season a bit more than the first as it wasn't bogged down with the flashbacks of how Murdock became Daredevil, though I feel that Wilson Fisk was a better villain than what was this season, though I can say I about cheered when

the bitchy DA got the hell shot out of her, thankfully the last minute attempt to humanize her through her kid was not done to full effect.

Also, I can honestly say that Stick might be the most pretentious person in the Marvel universe not named Tony Stark. I also wonder how long they are going to stick with the Miller/Bendis/Brubaker version of Daredevil timeline before getting to a Mark Waid-esque level of Daredevil.

i thought she was amazing. for the first couple of minutes i thought she sounded alot like chelsea peretti.

Me, too! I had to rewind the episode to see who it was. Then her laugh reminded me of Julie Klausner. Since they are two of my comedy crushes, I thought perhaps my brain had created a super-woman in my subconscious and I was hallucinating like JCVD in the movie!

I hate Stick. I hate everything about his character. I am still convinced that he is the reason why I didn't like Elektra as much as I probably would have without his interference. He doesn't even have the charm of Tony Stark. He's just an asshole.

What was the deal with that Frank Dux fanboy? The guy who introduces himself when he said "Hey how are you doing today? Good. You, good fighter... you... good...". And then later, when the referee says "He's too late", he pulls out a HUGE wad of cash, and stuffs it in his Gi and says "Too late?! No such thing as too late!"

And after that, the reporter shows up as his date. So, I can only assume that he's in the bar saying "No bro! I'm tellin' you! Frank fuckin' Dux is gonna win this motherfucker! Nah, I'm tellin' you, Frank Dux! Don't come at me with that 'Paco' bullshit! Yeah, Chong-Li's good and all that shit, but Frank Dux all the fuckin' way! I'll bet you anything! No, anything, bro! What you got?! Bro, I'll bet my fuckin' house on this shit! I'd go fuckin' homeless if Frank Dux don't win this shit! You gonna live on the streets for fuckin' Paco?! No. Frank MOTHERFUCKIN' Dux!!"

So, the reporter hears this guy espousing the skills of Frank Dux, and she says to him "Are you talking about Frank Dux?! I'd love to see him fight". He says "Hey, come with me, here's a ticket, I'll see you tomorrow, wear something nice, but don't mind getting blood on." before smashing his glass on the floor, screaming "FRANK DUX BITCHES!!!" and walks out of the bar chanting "KU-MI-TE! KU-MI-TE! KU-MI-TE!"

I understand that he's a trained secret weapon and all, but isn't Frank Dux guilty of desertion in this movie? According to the movie's timeline, the year is 1975 so the Vietnam war has either ongoing or has just ended. Would Helmer and Rollins really allow Dux to continue fighting in the Kumite once they found him in Hong Kong, which was at the time not part of, but certainly proximal to communist China? Furthermore, one Dux evaded arrest, wouldn't they bring in the military police corps to arrest Dux (and at the very least, prevent his escape from Hong Kong)? In fact, wouldn't this be especially true if Dux is a military asset (e.g. trained secret weapon)? What would prevent the PRC from kidnapping Dux and interrogating/torturing him into revealing his valuable training?

I think that before the lighter Waid stuff happens, Matt needs to get "Born Again".

Jeez, I haven't been here all week. Stupid work...

Well with what's happened regarding Karen and Wilson Fisk this season, I can definitely see it going down the path of that storyline. And with teasers in the promotional material for this season and With Charlie Cox stating that he the character in the next season, I can definitely see Bullseye coming soon if not also Taskmaster, who has recently returned to the ownership of Marvel Studios.

It's in context though, the black fighters were portrayed as jungle men, with one of the guys taking monkey style to an insane level.

Did anyone else find it surprising that Sadiq Hossein was obviously played by a non-arab actor? The actor, Bernard Mariano, is Filipino and bears almost no resemblance to a middle eastern person. Did the director (probably correctly) assume that he could simply have a brown-skinned guy wear a keffiyeh and the audience would just go for it? What's especially striking about this casting decision is that they already cast an actor, Michel Qissi, who while perhaps not Arab was at least ethnically North African, in the role of Suan Parades.

Incidentally, Qissi would be cast as Tong Po in the de facto sequel/remake of Bloodsport, Kickboxer. So, maybe these guys just liked playing against ethnic type.

I loved Stick in season 1. Scott Glenn is one of my favorite character actors (and one of my others, Clancy Brown, showed up this season!), and I thought he was one of the best parts of the first season.

I haven't finished the season yet (I think I'm on ep 9 or something; I've been catching up on movies for the DLM Challenge, so I haven't had time to watch any more), but his first appearance was pretty "meh." I've heard he's back again later in the season, so I guess I'll see how I feel when he comes back. But so far, Elektra would suck with or without him; she's just a snoozefest.

As for Stick, he even comes off like this in the comics, especially in the Ultimate Universe where he had been turned into a vampire and used his past relationship with Matt to easily turn him as well. So while it's a very good representation, it still doesn't mean he's a total dickface. As for Tony Stark his charm always comes in a very smarmy way which makes him disingenuous. Now with Civil War 2 on the way and Stark apparently set to play the voice of reason against tyranny that Captain America played in the first CIvil War, I just don't know if I can root for him.

As for the DLM challenge, how far are you Fister, I just passed 100 today so I have a little bit of wiggle room, plus I'm actually trying this year as opposed to last year when I made a mad dash in the last half of the year to complete it.

Too many pages, had to skip to the end.

Was anyone else sensing a little bit of sexual tension between JCVD and Tanaka's wife? It felt like everytime they were in the same space she would make eyes at him.

Are we sure that JCVD didn't kill the kid so that he could integrate himself into this family? Young Frank Dux didn't seem to be very bright, so it COULD be a plan he would try.

Also, I support the gay Frank Dux theory. What else can explain that gay porn opening?

Great episode and great guest! (We miss you June! Hope all is well!)

I didn't mind him in season 1, but he still kinda got on my nerves. Daredevil comics were never on my radar so I'm not sure if he was actually this much of an asshole in them. Idk maybe it's just cause every time he comes in I feel this negativity emitting from him towards Matt and I'm usually on Matt's side about things (usually... this season he was a real dumbo and it was hard to root for him). But Scott Glenn is an excellent actor and I love the representation of more blind characters.

This is all my own opinion on things but I feel that Elektra was just getting going when Stick came in and kinda halted her own character development. I loved seeing her interact with Matt and just the confidence that she portrayed really brought me in.

I'm only at 80. I need 10 more before Thursday to stay on track, which isn't too terrible. My router got fried a couple weeks ago during a pretty big storm, as well as a couple of my streaming devices, so that set me back a bit. Fortunately, I ride the train into work, so I can work in most of a movie during my commute, and then I can watch two at night since my internet is fixed now.
