Pirannha

Recommended Posts

While I realize it may be difficult to criticize one of your own movies, I think Piranha falls right into the "How Did This Get Made" wheelhouse. Christopher Lloyd, Jerry O'Connell's floating penis and giant, blood-thirsty CGI piranhas? How can you not discuss this?

What’s with Adam Scott and checkered shirts? Party Down, Parks & Rec, and Piranha. Okay. Here we go...

Paul’s character existed in one shot and didn’t exist in the next. What? They ran out of money for cgi, sure, but even having someone say 'hey, I think that guy fell in' would have at least somewhat explained this.

I love that the grown-ups in the movie played it so straight. Especially Adam Scott. Like when he takes off in the jet ski, then comes back and despite having ZERO knowledge about the sheriff’s kids being in trouble (or that she even has kids), he announces “I’m coming with you!” (And for some reason says it in an Australian accent…)

Strangely, one of my biggest issues with implausibility of the movie is that a bunch of college spring breakers are at a party that is in FULL SWING at 10:00 in the morning. I take issue with this for a number of reasons.

1) Even if this was the first day of spring break, presumably they arrived the day before, in which case they would have partied the night before and not be up and awake and ready to party bright and early the next morning.

2) Did anyone writing for this movie go to college? The timeline of the day doesn’t fit at all. For a party to be that rowdy by 10:00 am, people would have had to get up around 7:00 am. They would have gotten breakfast (likely just a sleeve of ritz crackers), spent some time getting ready (those girls were completely made up), then met up with their friends and pre-funked in their rooms for a solid 2 hours before hitting the lake. Trust me. I was in a sorority, I know how these things go.

3) I’m sure they just had to do that to give themselves enough daylight for shooting.

Anyway…

That girl’s hair got so tangled in the propeller that it ripped her face off, but when the boat capsizes there’s no hair in the propeller.

Does cocaine really stick to people’s faces like that, or is that a movie thing?

That’s all. I actually did really enjoy the movie. Its just funny when lack of funding results in major continuity issues. I understand if you can never do this movie on the podcast, but it would be pretty awesome if you did.

I thought the remake was really good. Not all movies they do have to be bad, they can be like, "what the fuck is going on?" (like Fast Five) and a movie about piranhas seems to fit that criteria. And they should bring Adam Scott back because he's awesome.

I just saw on imdb they are making a sequel with paul scheer reprising his role. it would be great if they did a director/writer episode for it but maybe paul doesnt want to do his own movies

This may be hitting close to the chest as I believe Paul was in it but it was just a big cheese fest. The predictable death scenes and lack of overall story made this a joy/pain to watch. I've seen this movie twice and both times was just to talk with everyone around me about the awfulness of it all.

I believe that Paul has said they want to do Piranha 3DD at some point. He seems pretty game for doing a Piranha 3D thing as well.

I also know he said the entire exprience was "sureal". I have no doubt in my mind they are planning on doing it whenever Piranha 3DD comes out.

It would help to give insight as well. My favorite episode is the punisher one, just for the simple fact that they had the director there.

I think it helps the audience to understand it a bit more when they have someone there who was there.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump since I would love to have an episode made on Piranha. I was listening to couple of older podcasts in which Paul briefly mentioned some of the things that went on while filming the movie, so thought I'd come on here and see if there were any intentions on making this episode.

I understand that there might be some a conflict of interest regarding the movie, and that Paul wouldn't want to speak poorly about the movie, but that shouldn't be a major issue considering Piranha 3D is legitimately one of the greatest bad movies made in recent years. I went to a screening of the movie and absolutely adored it; for my money it's better than Crank, Punisher War Zone, Drive Angry, the Expendables movies, and most other B movies that have gained a cult following since it was released. In addition to that Piranha is only one of a few very select movies that worked better in 3D (honestly Avatar and Dredd 3D are the only other ones that comes to mind).

I know there are a ton of other movies out there for the taking, but I hope someday you'll consider doing this one on the podcast, and put it in a positive light much like with Crank, Punisher, and the Fast movies. It wouldn't even feel forced either, as both fans and critics loved the movie.

Regardless of Paul's role in this movie, Piranha (the remake) pretty much falls into the same category that Tucker & Dale Versus Evil does, in that the campiness and over-the-top moments are totally intentional. While I'd certainly enjoy listening to Paul, Adam Scott, and maaaybe Ving Rhames talk about the making of it in some podcast form, I don't think it's ripe for HDTGM.

The only other thing I have to say is that the underwater scene with the two naked women swimming/dancing(?) or whatever was either too long or not long enough.

I disagree, there are so many out of this world moments they can talk about regarding the film. Aside from some of the crazy characters in the film (O'Connell, Dreyfuss, Lloyd, Roth, Rhames), there are tons of moments that can be dissected in the movie. The large majority of the movie is absolutely insane; heck they could spend an entire podcast just on what happens in the ending of the movie alone. I of course agree that the moments are absolutely intentional, but you can say the same in movies like Crank, Punisher, and much of Drive Angry (which the trio all seemed to embrace for the most part);.

I am not saying they should do it to critique the movie, but instead just embrace the insanity. Sharknado is legitimately a bad movie, and I for one am not entirely sure it was made that way intentionally, but Piranha 3D knew exactly how to take the concept of a Jaws ripoff and almost smashed it out of the park imo. It even scored a 73% on Rottentomatoes with Peter Travers praising it "Piranha 3D ends the summer on a note of shamelessly entertaining B movie bottomfeeding. Man-eating fish, blood everywhere, full frontal nudity, girl-on-girl action, a hard R rating, tacky 3D added after the fact, actors who look like they want to kill their agents, and a chance to laugh at everything in sight."

Plus in all honesty much like Crank 2 it features numerous pornstars, only this time they all meet their maker.

Did he say they were definitely going to do it? I remember him talking about the possibility but that's all.

I don't think 3DD would be all that interesting to talk about. It's just a shitty, shitty movie that's more stupid than crazy and falls under the category of so bad it's bad because they were trying to be clever and failed horribly. That movie is LITERALLY made out of garbage. The first one was a hell of a lot of fun and very well done though.
