Episode 144 - Stealth

Recommended Posts

I would probably go the opposite direction and give EDI really shitty taste. EDI would either be into terrible novelty songs like Who Let The Dogs Out and Mambo #5 or 2nd tier nu metal bands like Crazy Town

I would love to see a supercut of EDI's music scenes with the Incubus tracks replaced with Alvin and the Chipmunks songs.

And also, when talking music, movies, or books, there tends to be pretentiousness whenever people talk about these two subjects in particular because there is always something "way better" or "underground that is too cool for you" than what you already enjoy.

That probably describes me more than I would prefer. But that's probably more of a relic of my 20s than any genuine concern for other people's tastes. But I would bet that my elitism would find Jonah Raydio's elitism scoffable.

Seeing as we're all really focused on EDI's musical tastes, it feels like it's high time to play a forum game we haven't played in awhile...

It didn't have a title before, but I think I'd like to call it "EDI'S JUKEBOX."

Some of you all remember the rules, but for the new people, here they are:

  • Take whatever device you use to listen to music, set it to play your entire music library, and put it on shuffle or random.
  • Post in the forums the next ten songs (with band/artist names) you listened to in their entirety. Even if you end up skipping a song with one second left to go, it's out. (Although, many of us like to include our "Almost-made-its.")
  • Once posted, if anyone would like to, people can comment on your selections, but let's keep the comments respectful. In other words, if you really like a song you can say so, but don't be rude if you don't like a song. "If you don't have anything nice to say" and all that.
  • These aren't supposed to be your favorite songs of all time, and there's no reason to skip a song because you don't think it's "cool." We all post on an Internet Forum dedicated to a podcast making fun of bad movies, I'm afraid the time for "coolness" has long since passed us by. :)
  • NEW RULE--Feel free to place an asterisk (*) beside the title of any song you ended up singing along to.

I'm actually really happy that we're able to do this again! I've always been more interested in hearing what people are listening to "right now" rather than just a list of favorite bands and songs.

Okay, I'll do the too-enthusiastic-new-guy thing of jumping in first to EDI'S JUKEBOX. With the rule of 'the next ten songs' in mind, I set my entirely library to random and set to it. From years of collecting CDs and ripping to my iTunes, I have thousands of b-side tracks from random bands that I rarely listen to. But this time, I only skipped when I came across a song I couldn't bear to sit through. Here's my first ten that I listened to all the way through. Few can be considered favourites!

1.

- Avicii feat. Dan Reynolds

2.

- Bran Van 3000

3.

- Spiñal Tap

4.

- The Clash

5.

- The Beatles

6.

- Sarah Slean

7.

- Kate Miller-Heidke

8. Paris - Kate Nash

9.

- U2

10.

- Kate Nash

I'm pretty satisfied that there's a good mix of Australian (where I'm from) and Canadian (where I live now), with some random b-sides in there. I stuck with Vertigo because it made me laugh in memory of 'U Talkin' U2 2 Me?'. I will half-asterisk 'Do Wah Doo' as the song that had me dancing a little in my seat here in this Starbucks. I would have skipped the second Kate Nash song to avoid the double-up but I really like that song. Artists skipped include: Feist, The Wiggles, Macklemore, Serena Ryder, Sarah Slean, The Aston Shuffle, Slim Dusty, Crowded House, Bon Jovi, The Whitlams.

I'm not sure if we also require commentary on our own picks, or defences. Looking forward to hearing what others have!

*Edited to include links like others did! I will maybe try a follow-up tomorrow after I finish teaching.*

Caveat this is from the music I have on my phone not the full library. And no one will care about that because a few of these probably only EDI and I have downloaded anyway.

1. Signal to Noise - Frankel

2. Calendar Smack - The Capstan Shafts

3. Wheels to Ceiling - Loud Springs

4. Crows - Car Seat Headrest

5. Los Borrachos - Car Seat Headrest

6. Kahlil Gibran - STRFKR

I can't sing along to anything cause I'm at the office but I will put an asterisk next to the ones I would have ended up singing along to if I were not at work.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5. Carry That Weight - The Beatles (I can only find covers I'm no longer doing the hard work for you with this song)

6.

7.

8.

9.

10.

ALMOSTS: "My Last Mistake" by Dan Auerbach, "Currents" by Eisley*, "Riptide" by Vance Joy*

EDIT: I had to copy Cameron's lead with the hyperlinks cause some of these songs are amazing and deserve to be heard so I did the hard work for y'all.

I really enjoyed the part where Navy guy with the monitor asks Sam Shepard if they should send a search party out for Jessica Biel. In North Korea. "Son, we have no diplomatic relations with that country!" I want a whole other movie about why that guy wasn't immediately discharged for such a dumb question.

I also don't understand why the Navy tech guy/EDI mechanic was allowed to look like he lived in the ship's basement. Fairly certain that neither his hair nor t-shirts were military-issue.

They Might Be Giants

3) "There's a Place" The Beatles *

Also the line "Instead of talking let me demonstrate/Get down to business and skip foreplay" makes me question whether or not Mr. Derulo has ever had sex. If he has, I can only imagine he's left a wake of unsatisfied lovers...Oh! And fuck yeah I sang along!)*

Owing to your masterful acting chops, Paul would you please read the line, "Just tell me you love me, you pussy," in a pirate voice on the next mini episode? I feel Jessica Biel - fine actress though she may have been - just didn't do this line justice.

As I mentioned in the minisode thread, I didn't watch this movie. I'm in a fight with the actors from "7th Heaven" (fuck that show!) so I can't deal with Jessica Biel. Although she was dating Chris Evans at the time this was done and now she's married to JT. So she's doing just fine without my love and support.

I was wondering about the Jamie Foxx death. Were they trying for something emotional like Goose's death in "Top Gun?" Or do we think Jamie Foxx was just like "I'm too famous now, I'm leaving"?

I also have questions about Wenworth Miller's voice. Because I've seen him on "Buffy" and "Prison Break" and I know he speaks like a

. But sometimes he does weird voices. Like last season on "Legends of Tomorrow" he did something weird with a drawl that bugged me to no end.

I guess my question is just WHY, WENTWORTH MILLER, WHY?

So, I think that is a generous reading of what happened to Jamie Foxx's character in this movie. He was killed because there was not going to be a black person living at the end of this movie in a speaking role (Joe Morton pops in, pops out, and then never seen again). This is something that happens to black characters alot in movies -- just at some point the movie decides that we are coming down to the final stretch and there is not to be any black people for the last act.

I say this because Lucas sends Jamie Foxx after EDI. This is after they have established that Lucas is the hot shot best of the best fighter pilots earlier. If that is the case, then why not go yourself, Lucas? No, he sends the black guy to be killed. This is just like when they sent Sam Jackson to the raptors in Jurassic Park. HE'S A GODDAMNED COMPUTER PROGRAMMER, NOT A FUCKING DINOSAUR HUNTER/FIGHTER!!! That one gets me really mad because I'm a programmer. I have the body of a heavy reader, not a outdoorsman. You send me out into dangerous territory with dinosaurs, I'm going to say, "Fuck you, buddy! I need to be here to run the startup script."

So, this is what Stealth did to Foxx; he was the expendable red shirt. It has to be noted that this movie was made after Foxx's role in "Ray". A role that he won an Oscar for. So, the Oscar winning actor doesn't get to live to the end. Hell, they filmed new scenes for GI Joe after Channing Tatum released Magic Mike and his ass didn't win any awards. And the icing on the cake, they don't even react strongly to Foxx being killed. It's like, "oh well, so what about plan B?" Jamie Foxx's movie life and death did not matter in this film at all.

Thank you! So glad to be here! (Let me know if I'm posting too much. I'll settle, I promise).

I just went back and watched the 'homework' scene for the three, with specific interest in what the set dressers have done to personalise each of their 'dorm rooms' (as described on the ep). It's pretty hilarious seeing what each character is pigeonholed as: first, we see Josh Lucas, with a fairly spartan room but with a handful of indistinct photos of random football games up, emphasising that he's a man's man. Okay. Cool. Then we go see Jessica Biel: she sits on a yoga ball (or a Fitness Orb, as Dwight Schrute calls it) and is surrounded by flowers, photos of children, and hand-drawn pictures (including one of a plane that says 'my aunt'). Then, we go to Jamie Foxx's room, where the less said about his situation the better - he dances around in suspiciously Ray Charles-invoking sunglasses, surrounded by hundreds of photos of beautiful young women. So, we have the three archetypes: the man's man sportsman; the sensitive spinster aunt; the irrepressible ladykiller. THEN, when Josh goes to visit Jessica, she (for some reason) is the only one who has laundry hanging in her room (including a slip, which I guess she was wearing in the bar scene under her dress whites?), meaning that not only is the 'one of the boys' angel undermined by the excellent points raised above, but she cares about 'dumb things' like laundry and family. Which somehow makes her weak? I guess? Why do we have to see the scene about Josh Lucas's foster mother while Jessica Biel's gitch hangs artfully around the room? And then she very conspicuously makes reference to her 'c cup' for no real reason.

I agree - when i first heard this I figured it was supposed to be along the lines of 'you just barely escaped a hostile environment in Russia where you thought you were toast, but now you're back on American soil, so you're safe', but it just comes across as a heavy-handed reminder to the audience about where we are. A 'welcome back to America' or 'welcome home' line might have done the same job.

Rob Cohen movies have the subtlety of a porno. What you have is Josh Lucas plays the All-American white dude, Jessica Biel plays the virginal white girl who is ready for Lucas peen, and Jamie Foxx plays the oversexed black man. It is very obvious that Biel and Lucas are going to hook up from the beginning and Foxx is going to die. Shit, make this thing interesting. They are trying to rip off Top Gun, make Lucas and Foxx the couple. Hell, switch it up and make Foxx and Biel the couple. Do something interesting Cohen instead of this Trump-level bullshit.

How in the world does this guy get money for these movies?

So this morning I woke up with conjunctivitis and have been shaking off some sort of chest cold so I am pretty horse and not feeling my best and not in the mood for singing along. Here's my EDI playlist:

  • Dio - Last In Line
  • Mastodon - Trilobite
  • The Eagles - Hotel California
  • Oceansize - Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions (anyone that likes Muse should check these guys out. This is not their best song, I would highly recommend
. IMO they should have been all over the radio in the US, but just never got the exposure. I hope that they're one of those bands that reunites to discover that they are bigger than they were when they broke up)
  • Ozzy Osbourne - Goodbye To Romance
  • Mindfunk - Billygoat (Weird, underrated semi-psychadelic grunge)
  • Megadeth - FFF (great song from a mediocre album)
  • System of a Down - Revenga
  • Radiohead - Karma Police (I think that people are often surprised to find out that I like Radiohead. Or at least not so much Radiohead as I think OK Computer is a fantastic album. I find most of their other stuff to be hit-or-miss, mostly miss)
  • Hammers of Misfortune - You Should Have Slain Me

I am a bit surprised that I had no rap show up, no Snoop, no Eazy, nothin. I thought I had more of it on my ipod, but that's how it goes sometime. I am already going for another 10.
