Movies for Moms

Recommended Posts

The canon should be filled with movies our moms love and ones we love to watch with them. My personal pick to start off is Dirty Dancing (even if I'm tired of 80's movies) or An Affair to Remember. What are everyone else's picks?

My mom is a John Cusack person. So, she'd pick Better Off Dead..., which is her all-time favorite film. Personally, I think it's awesome. It's a terrific absurdist romantic comedy with a terrific performance from Cusack. Say Anything... is great as well.

My mom loves Thelma and Louise

Your mom rocks.

My mom would probably pick any Tom Hanks movie, so allow me to nominate Big on her behalf. I am sure she'd also mention Ryan's Daughter and Dirty Dancing.

I remember watching The Bridges of Madison County with her and we both cried our eyes out. Not sure she remembers it, but I'll always associate that film with her. I'll just leave that there.

My mother's a huge James Bond fan, but we already have Casino Royale in the Canon. She's also a huge Trekkie, but we're still debating whether WoK gets in. Hm.

Ooh!

The Graduate!

I texted my mom asking what her favorite films were and she said:

- The Lady Eve

- Sullivan's Travels

- The Palm Beach Story

...she's kind of into Preston Sturges.

Of all the late 70's/80's movies that my mom would rent from blockbuster during my childhood the only one I remember us both loving was Tootsie. I remember splitting with her on Nine to Five when my age was somewhere in that range (okay I may have been 10), but those are the two I look back on as essential mom-core.

I wish my mom was as cool as your mom.

Seriously.

I'd love to hear a "Dirty Dancing" episode.

It's crazy how much better it holds up than virtually every other 80's teen movie-- nearly everything else from the era is chock full of racism, homophobia, and misogyny (usually played for laughs) whereas "Dirty Dancing" feels more progressive than most movies made today.

Not to say that a lack of timelessness or problematic elements preclude something from being in the Canon (It certainly doesn't; Gunga Din is a favorite), but I do think it just serves to highlight how truly brilliant Linda Gottlieb's profoundly feminist script is, not to mention the direction from Emile Ardolino's who really makes it a female POV movie that never veers into male-gazey schlock (which we've all seen happen a million times in other movies).

It's one of my absolute favorites. Great suggestion!

My mom introduced me to Rocky Horror and John Waters films, so there's that...
