Is there a way to take this offline and not discuss it publicly? Because as I said it involves things that annoyed me about a previous guest. I guess I should have just scrubbed that comment too, but now it's been quoted in other comments so it's a little late for that.

Also, I have trans friends and support trans and gay rights. That's not what this is about.

I listen to Annas podcast and she usually very sharp and very funny, they recorded this right after her podcast which records quite late and it was also her 40th birthday so I think she probably had a bit too much to drink.

 

I'd love her to come back on another episode in top form because I think she'd be an amazing guest.

I liked the last few pages of that thread, though. It reinforced for me why this is (ultimately) a great, supportive, and fun community.

1. Was Michael Carrington living in a shed? In one scene he's at a desk writing one of the T-Bird's essays, but the desk appears to be part of a living space, complete with shelves and cot, inside a tiny metal shelter.

 

2. I guess I don't know much about early 1960s mother-daughter relationships or fashion, but when the Pink Ladies are chasing after the T-Birds, who are themselves chasing after the Cool Rider, doesn't one of the Pink Ladies yell out that she's wearing her mother's underwear? If so, is that a thing?

 

3. Did anybody else notice that Rydell High is seemingly completely white? I get that it's 1961, but that's messed up to have a movie made in 1982 take place in a racially segregated school in 1961 and NEVER TALK ABOUT IT.

This episode was everything I wanted it to be. I absolutely love it when June is all in on a movie, and she was a total delight. I kind of want a full soundtrack of June singing all the Grease 2 songs. I have a ton to say, but things are a bit crazy this morning, so I'll get into my C&Os later. For now, I just wanted to pop in and say that the ep was fantastic.

I think Jason nailed why I can't stand so many musicals, but can at least respect the more esteemed ones for what they do and how they do it. When the story comes to a screeching halt because five minutes have gone by without a tune and they feel the need to fart out a song that serves no purpose, like it describes what JUST happened or it's about something completely irrelevant, it just makes the genre look bad to someone that doesn't know better. It's like song porn, or a bad slasher movie that's trying to emulate the one that DID transcend the genre that took the wrong thing away from it and tried to build another thing around it.

 

I'm pretty sure that Anna's cake lines are from "Cobra". How dare you not remember...

I don't think it's that strange. The 80s weren't a super-racially conscious time. Look at high school movies from the 80s; they're by and large all-white. The 90s were slightly better, but the POC characters were usually just tokens. I don't think it was a matter of the school being segregated or not so much as it was just the way that the filmmakers (and their largely white audiences) thought of school

Yes, he did. I was going to point that out if no one else did. I watched that part, like, 30 times, and I loved it.

Also, Maxwell Caulfield's birth name is Maxwell Newby - fair enough, looks like he needed a pseudonym for some unspecified reason, that happens. But his first credited role, in 1967's Accident (as an 8 year old), he was already in the pseudonym game, credited as Maxwell Findlater. Is it possible that when they asked him what his first pseudonym might be, he told them he'd 'find one later' and was completely misunderstood?

He was a little shrimpy dude and kind of looked like less pasty Jay Baruchel to me, so it kind of threw me off that he was the leader. They went from Danny Zuko to this fucking asshole? Jason's right; they should all kill themselves.

Because I had almost the exact same experience with Grease 2 as June (but with laserdiscs), I've been waiting/dreading this movie coming up on the podcast. This movie (along with Face/Off and That Thing You Do) is basically my childhood. I love it so much that I actually bought the physical soundtrack of all these terrible songs. So, to reiterate, was very frightened to press play.

This might be my favorite episode now. June is the absolute best. Her singing along every time a song was mentioned is maybe my favorite thing to happen on this show. Also Jason's freakout when he realizes who Dolores is was amazing.

 

Two things:

There was a live stage version on the West End. My best friend went for her birthday and messaged me from the intermission practically crying because she was so happy. She was like, "THERE WAS A LADDER WHEN THEY DID COOL RIDER. IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!!!"

 

I don't know if this is true but I was watching Reproduction on youtube a couple years ago and there was a comment underneath from a girl who claimed her parents met on this movie. Apparently when they really pissed her off, she played Reproduction at full volume. I've been looking but I can't find the comment now.

Yes! I laughed out loud when Adrian Zmed grabbed and threw Christopher McDonald up against a wall to intimidate him. Christopher McDonald looks like he has a foot of height on Adrian Zmed and at least twenty pounds. It looked like Christopher McDonald was getting dominated by a very petulant pre-teen.

 

Also, did anyone think it was weird that the T-Birds didn't drive cars? Wouldn't that be like a gang called the Harley Hogs zipping around on skateboards?

I hope the very presence of this adaptation makes it into the next minisode: that's an amazing detail, well done. Look at the teaser poster, where they both mock the fact that it's even happening, AND include a ladder in the promo. It was apparently so well received in concert it got a revival a little while later. No word on the Broadway transfer.
