Come on Brendan, what's not to like about The Bugle?

Link to post

Actually the Bugle's pretty good, it just fell off my list at some point. I just feel every time I see a list online (especially podmass), there's always someone in the comments going "What about the Bugle!". I think The Bugle and Walking the Room may have some of the most dedicated fans-- I always see them getting the "Hey what about this one!" comments.

Brendan, Yes!!! Tell Em Steve Dave is so underrated and id the best pod on Kevin Smith's network. all of the pods I listen to amuse me but only that show and CBB ever make me laugh out loud at work and look like a crazy man (on a side note, anyone know why there have been a few small digs at Kevin Smith on CBB?)

I have such a weird feeling towards Tell Em Steve Dave. I started listening before there were as many great podcasts out there as there are now (or at least, that I was aware of). I'm invested and I like the show but I don't think I'd ever recommend it to anyone. I'm not going to deny it's weird appeal though. I think it's that the three guys are super honest and real characters, albeit not always being the most scintillating, high energy guys.

Kevin Smith deserves the digs. There have been some decent smodcast episodes, but as the show portfolio expanded it became more and more clear that it's all anal sex and homophobia from here on in. If there were less awesome things out there that I could endorse wholeheartedly (like Earwolf and Maxfun) I might give it more play, but it's just not funny enough.

I feel similar to how I did about when I used to listen to Adam Carrola. The guy can make jokes but I constantly had to ignore the racism and misogyny. Eventually I decided to stick to shows that didn't make me feel like a creep. (fair warning-- there may still be some shows on that list that are going to make me feel like a real creep.) As there's more and more comedy shows out there, It's nice to be able to find a bunch of stuf that really appeals to you, and I'm guessing the ...podisphere? will only get more diverse. This is all going to look totally crazy one the paragraph breaks go away, so enjoy that!

@Brendan, I don't personally know alot of podcast listeners period. but one in particular had listened to the first TESD and didn't get it but after I told him to go back and listen to an ep later in their evolution, he thanked me for puting him onto it. The mix of personality dynamic is gold and they speak with such sincerity about everything which isn't always the case in podcasting. I love the type of shows where you feel like your just listening to your friends have a conversation. Yeah it isn't a yuck a minute but the conversation is amost always enthralling.

I find faults with Kevin Smith in that sometimes his humor can be a bit broad and dare I say "dick heavy". thats why you have to take him in moderation. However he's a fantastic anecdotalist and when he talks about something that he's really passionate about he conveys it very well. Also i've enjoyed his interviews on his morning show "plus one per diem". particularly the ones with Maron, Hardwick, and Shandling. I don't really think you can call him homophobic. He's shown nothing but support for the gay community. For one his brother is gay and so are his friends indie documentarian Malcolm Ingram and TV/film producer Dan Etheridge both whom he gave shows on his pod network. i just know that there was a point early on when he started smoking weed on Smodcast and I think the tone got a little more dumb.

@ Eddie-
With regards to Kevin Smith, I don't think that he hates or fears gay people, but eighty percent of his jokes end with the punchline being two guys fucking. If the very idea of guys having sex with each other is your pinnacle of humor, at what point does it become cruel to them? I think it's a totally debatable point, and while I'm sure he does it with no malice, it makes me feel like a jerk for listening. I'm also not going to say Smodcast never had any great episodes, but I just cant get into the vibe they've settled into.
I was being a little harsh on Tell Em Steve Dave...I do like it, It's unpolishedness is kind of a double edged sword. It's fun to listen to, but there can be episodes where it's a total downer for 40 minutes, only picking it up in the end. That's one of the cool things about podcasting is you can put out a show that's really rough but still interesting and appealing and it doesn't need everyone to like it. I'm all about giving a chance to shows where the hosts aren't pro performers and are kind of making their own way

Yeah, I think the charm of TESD is that they're not a professional pod. If I can point out another thing about Smith it's that in his most recent film he goes out to make this great villain based on possibly the most infamous homophobe Fred Phelps. but stil I see your point.

How did you discover this guy Johnny? Keith and The Girl?

Believe it or not, he's a personal friend of mine. Back in the 1990s and early 2000's, he was working in a comic shop and I was a weekly customer. He eventually left and we still keep in touch. In fact, for a while, we worked together on a website where we wrote reviews of bad movies. He was in town for about 6 months a while later and we ended up working on 3 MST3k/Rifftrax inspired videos. I'm actually quite proud of them despite my occassional dialogue flubs.

Still, if I ever did something like that again, I'd love to get better at it.
