Power Rangers (2017)

Recommended Posts

I will start this by saying that I loved the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers as a kid when it premiered when I was in kindergarten (which makes me feel really old) and this movie seems to not understand anything about the show. This wasn’t a Breakfast Club scenario where a group of random kids come across an alien entity, they were already friends which made their dynamic and relationships work better as a team. The teens were also either already martial artists of some manner or were athetic (I think Kimmy was a gymnast if I remember correctly), so they were able to properly battle the enemies that they came across.

This idea that they are now getting superpowers or heightened abilities because they found the coins is ridiculous, where they are bending metal by just gripping it, breaking furniture with light punches, being able to scale the side of almost 90 degree inclines of a mountain, or apparently breathing underwater as shown in the first trailer is just screaming of a Bay-off. Add to the the hackey “I’m black” “No you’re not” joke already gives me real cause for concern as to what this movie is going to be like. The only positives I got from this trailer were Banks and Cranston who look like they are trying their best with what they have been given, but that’s not enough for me to want to see this in theaters.

Unfortunately I think this will do really well at the box office due to nostalgia, unless further trailers get worse, but this should definitely be covered by the show because it looks awful.

"Hot Nonsense" The new series starring Jason Mantzoukas as a wise-cracking, bad movie-loving firefighter. Coming to Netflix in 2017.

Based on the trailer it seems like the tone is completely wrong. It looks like your average superhero origin story -- here's a group of teens discovering their powers, "we can jump really far now!", blah blah. Looks like they're taking it way too seriously, which will just suck all the fun out of what could be a really entertaining movie.

It premiered when I was in middle school so thanks for making me feel old. Kimberly was a gymnast. That's why she was my fave, because I wanted to be a gymnast.

Although I was under the impression that just having the coins *did* give them some strength or power for the unmorphed fights with the putty patrol, because everyone else in the world seems totally unable to deal with them. Though they were certainly not strong enough to break a sink or scale a cliff.

I'm iffy on the Breakfast Club scenario. On the one hand, it did seem odd that these kids were all friends originally. But on the other hand, they were supposed to have been chosen because they were friends and could already work together. Not just stumbled into it. I guess it's the stumbling into it I have a problem with. What are Zordon and Alpha doing? Sitting around, playing checkers?

I am also not a fan of Jason and Kim kissing in the trailer. Everyone knows that Kim and Tommy belong together forever with hearts drawn around their names.

From what I remember the coins were merely a means for them to Morph which would allow them to take on harder opponents and handle the damage that they could deal out, while the zords were meant for the times when villains grew in size. During the first series the putty patrol were basically fought by the team outside of costume if it was just the patrol, they only really started wearing their suits to fight them when the putty patrol evolved under Lord Zed's rule where the Rangers had to hit a chest emblem on the patrol members which caused them to explode, though after a while they reverted back to normal once they realized the new patrol's weakness and holy shit I remember way too much about this show.

As for Zordon and Alpha 5, I also wonder how they will be introduced in this outside of what's been shown in the trailer because in the show they were hidden from man as they anticipated the day that Rita would get free of her imprisonment on the moon.

That makes you, what, 25?

I'll be turning 30 this year.

Holy shit, Elizabeth Banks was on Jimmy Fallon last night with a clip to promote the movie. I cant find the Jimmy Fallon clip but its the same one in the interview below.

That yellow outfit/dress from the video, although not as tight and revealing as the one in the movie, reminded me of the one she wore in "Walk of Shame"

Madds Mikkelsen had an interview the other day where he described how he walked out of his audition for the Fantastic Four reboot.

I feel like Elizabeth Banks should have made a similar decision here.

I just finished watching this and this needs to be a double live show with the original Rangers film. While there are some nice things in the film like how the tropes of the original series characters are changed up like the black character being an on-the-spectrum geek who loves country music or the Asian character avoiding contact with because of survivor's guilt he feels over his mother seemingly fighting a terminal illness. Unfortunately, they really heap on the Breakfast Club tropes of the kids being the jock (Red), cheerleader/hot chick (Pink), rebel (Black), nerd (Blue), and loner/goth/outsider (Yellow). I will say if the entire 2 hr movie was like the first 5 minutes was, this movie would have been AMAZING because it was gritty in the way that short film was that came out a few years back, unlike what the movie was that bounced between grit and over-the-top hamminess.

There are points that are never explained like how Jason, who is a Bobo Zac Efron, is introduced trying to play a prank on a rival high school and gets arrested, and when questioned by his dad about why he did it and ruined his chances at a serious college football career, he gives the stereotypical "you wouldn't understand" response, but then never explains it to the audience so we understand his motivations. Then you have various other issues/causes that are introduced but never elaborated on past a couple seconds which make it seem like they were just part of a checklist. Then you have moments where they literally call out to Transformers and other moments that just have you shaking your head in wonder. Speaking of Transformers, the product placement in this movie rivals any Michael Bay film, including a 3 minute span where Krispy Kreme is referenced or said about 25 times, among other instances.

Elizabeth Banks chews up scenery on a Pacino-esque level, while there isn't enough Brian Cranston. They try to do a lot of fan service, but it's not hitting you over the head outside of one bit where they play the original theme song as the zords run on screen as they did in the TV show, and a quick cameo from a couple original cast members. Another big issue is outside of the opening segment, the characters don't appear in costume until about 90 minutes into the film which makes it basically a half-assed teen dramedy. This movie really had no identity to itself and was just trying to ape Transformers right down to how the Megazord looks, which is unfortunate. Hell if they made this in the same vein as the original series and had fun with it, it would have been a much better movie, similar to the Batman '66 comic series.

Confession: I cried.

Like it's not a perfect movie or anything. I kind of hate the kid who plays Jason, which is a real problem since he's supposed to be the main character. (He kind of looks like Iceman from X-Men if he had a receding hairline?) But, like, it's watchable.

I also really loved the series as a kid so I might be biased?

See I loved the series as a kid as well and while the movie is watchable, the changes that they make like giving the kids superpowers pushes it more towards bad for me. One review that I read questioned why the Rangers even needed the suits outside of driving the zords, because without the suits they basically had the same abilities and threshold for damage. I will say that the actor playing the Blue Ranger was easily the best part of this movie and carried the other cast members on his back as they moped about with their own after school special problem.

When they carried Billy's body across the mountain. The visual was quite striking and it was sad.

Holy shit I forgot about that scene. That was another bonkers moment because for that act to happen they literally had to traverse what I assume was the length of the town and since none of them had a car, that meant they did that whole thing on foot. Did no one notice this?!

I feel weird being in this thread defending this movie?

I did wonder how they got from the docks to the mountain with no one commenting. I assume they had to weekend at Bernies it, which would be a hilarious end credit scene.

My understanding about why they needed the suits was that they could fight the putties without the suits but not Rita or Goldar, as shown when Trini was attacked by Rita in her room. I kind of wish they did fight actual putties unmorphed because those were always my favorite bits of the show.

I was kind of annoyed they all remained in pods when they were in the megazord. Like I understand that it never made sense how they went from their own cockpits to a group situation, but how do they control the thing together if they can't see one another? I would think they would need more training on THAT than anything. They needed the line about how once they could access the Grid they could understand the zords? I remember that being in the show.

See the Grid was something I don't remember at all from the original series, along with a couple other terms that were in the movie. I did like that they made the Megazord have separate pods which made more sense that rather than a Voltron-esque cockpit which seemed to be more budgetary than anything else. With each of them controlling a limb, it just reminded me of QWOP where the player basically only goes two steps before losing, that team mechanic though does explain why that final fight was so painfully slow. Also, after hearing that Rita was looking for gold to build Goldar, and the next scene shows her eating gold, the first thought that came into my mind was "holy hell, is she going to shit him into existence?!" Yet then when she's at the mine and is sucking the gold out of the ground, I was wondering why she didn't do that in the first place?

The other thing that got to me was the fact that Billy's mom knew all of the other kids by reputation, and announced it to him. I get why she would exclaim that Jason Scott was in the house as he was the star QB of the high school and had recently been arrested, but why is she then going "OH SHIT KIMMY HART AND ZACK TAYLOR!?" It might as well have sounded like "why are these good humans here to meet a dumb-dumb nothing like you?"

Also,

I instantly had to think the whole movie was a Jacob's Ladder scenario after the van gets nailed by a speeding train. None of those kids were wearing belts and the train hit the van square and crumbled it almost completely, so they are uber dead. And if it isn't how is Billy not grounded for eternity by his mom or is she so absent minded that she doesn't see that the van is missing or upset when the cops notify her that her car had been involved in an accident?

Didn't she know Jason, Kimberly and Zack but not Trini? I think that was the joke.

I wondered about the car too. Only explanation is that Angel Grove cops are terrible, which pretty much tracks with the series. It should've randomly been Bulk and Skull. Remember how they wanted to be like junior detectives in one season? That was really dumb.

Yeah she called her Didi which I never got as that was what everyone else called her and those two names are so different from one another, I would have understood the bit if it was like Trixie but not Didi. For a second I thought the detention teacher was either Bulk or Skull since the camera kept focusing on him, or at least someone with a history with the series but according to IMDB he's just a character actor. I'm assuming those two will be making a return of some kind in the sequels, because even though they were jerks in the show, they never tried to break a kids wrist in the middle of a crowded hallway like the ginger bully in this film.

I have to bump this thread because this movie is perfect for the show, also because the porn parody that has come out since then has done a better representation of the original series than this hunk of shit, and had better production value.
