Monkey Shines

Recommended Posts

I'll start by saying that Monkey Shines is something everyone should experience. It's available on Netflix Instant and Hulu (

). If you want to go into this dramatic masterpiece clean go check it out with this knowledge: it was made in 1988 by George Romero and it's about a quadriplegic man and his helper monkey.

Plot Spoilers:
Jason becomes quadriplegic after being hit by a truck. Thankfully, he has a friend who experiments on monkeys by injecting them with human brains. He takes one of his monkeys to a woman who trains helper monkeys. They present their quadriplegic friend with his helper monkey and everything is ducky for awhile. There's even monkey hugs. Then, it becomes apparent that the monkey can read Jason's thoughts and begins executing his violent wishes. For some reason, Jason also tends to become really angry when the monkey is around. This escalates until what may be the greatest villain kill in the history of cinema.

Oh, this movie about a telepathic murder monkey is two hours long. There's a lot of focus on Jason coming to grips with his disability in the beginning. You really want the perseverance of the human spirit to shine through in a movie like this.

The plot synopsis of this movie on Wikipedia is a gold-mine. For example: "The film contains a rare example of an intimate love scene with a severely handicapped protagonist."

This stands out as particularly insane among the countless awful horror movies I watched as a kid, having had free reign of my parents' video store. Imagine my delight when the Upright Citizens Brigade tackled the terror of helper monkeys a decade later.

Was just thinking about this horrible movie. Would be great if you could get Matt Atchity from Rotten Tomatoes to do this one with you.
