Homework: Eraserhead (1977) vs Blue Velvet (1986)

Recommended Posts

I'm not HoldenMartinson or nickperkins, but you've still got a Homework thread.

Next week Amy will be joined by Michael Nordine of Indiewire, the LA Weekly to pit Eraserhead (1977) against Blue Velvet (1986) in an all Lynch versus episode. (Hooray, Twin Peaks is back!)

Here are some VOD links, apologies in advance for those of you outside of the US as these links may not be available in your region.

That made me laugh out loud. Thanks for this.

Damn, this is a hard one. I just rewatched blue velvet, convinced it would be a lesser piece of art compared to eraserhead, but nope. That film is phantastic, and Isabella Rossellini moved me to tears.

Eraserhead is one of a handful of movies I've seen that instantly puts me into a really, really dark mood.

Glad we're finally getting Lynch into the Canon but this vs is brutal. Leaning towards Eraserhead but listening to the episode may change my mind.

I'll probably go with Blue Velvet, partially because I prefer having a somewhat concrete storyline to go with the abstract weirdness, and also I think it contains more of what we'd broadly describe as "Lynchian": an over-the-top scary villain, examination of the dark underbelly of 1950s Americana, fetishizing the female form (and commentary on such), Kyle MacLachlan. If you want to get someone into David Lynch, I think you start there.

But as always, I'll wait to hear the argument for Eraserhead.

I fully expect a review in the voting thread to read: "Eraserhead?? Fuck that shit! PABST BLUE VELVET!"

Wow, this is going to be the hardest Canon decision since I don't remember when. An iconic filmmaker, two incredible films, yet so different from each other. Don't know which way I'm going yet; all I know is I hope Mulholland Drive also gets nominated some day.

And what about those of us who prefer Mulholland Drive, or the Disney one about a man who drives a lawnmower straight into inspiration, or Wild at Heart! Nick Cage is going to find his way into the Canon one way or another.

Just kidding, Blue Velvet beats Eraserhead but Mullholland Drive beats Blue Velvet

Fun Fact: Entertainment Weekly ranked Blue Velvet 37th on their "100 greatest films of all time" list in 1999 but re-ranked it 15th for 2013. Eraserhead did not make either.

He's got Fast Times at Ridgemont High. So, if nothing else...

That said, I'd love an Adaptation. episode.
