The Mutilator (1984)

Recommended Posts

AKA "Fall Break," this slasher movie was directed by Buddy Cooper, who apparently took a screenwriting class, wrote this script, dropped out of film school, and made it. Apparently, the director and his dad were local celebrities of the town and they were able to work with local police, get extras easily, etc.

A kid decides to surprise his dad for his birthday by cleaning his guns for him. He accidentally kills his mom and his dad loses it. Cut to the kid in college, drinking with friends, bored during "fall break," when his estranged father calls him to tell him he needs him to lock up the beach house/condo for winter.

The beach cabin is full of hooks and fishing trophies, as well as a framed photo of a guy the dad accidentally killed. They proceed to get drunk and hang out on the beach. They are dumb and horrible and I do not care that they die.

The dialog and acting are bad, in ways that range from odd to stupid and infantile. And the theme song to the movie makes it feel like a feel-good 80's teen movie. It is tonally uneven in a way that makes it creepier, but still pretty goofy. I cannot tell if the happy theme song was intended to be ironic or just a tone deaf decision.

Did I mention all the characters are awful?

Fun fact: the male lead later became a voice actor on Pokemon. I'm not sure which characters.

Available to watch on Amazon Prime.

It's also available on Shudder, which is a great service for both good and bad cult horror movies.

Here is the trailer, which features the theme song and some great, very clever dialog ("I've got a bad feeling about this"):
