Musical Mondays Week 87 Titanic: The Legend Goes On

Recommended Posts

We need to talk about Party Time. Whose dog is that?! Why does he rsp? How does a dog in 1912 know rap? Was he planning this rap? Like is he the cruise director for the animals?  Would you burst into rap about party time  if a mouse thanked you for not ending up "in someone else's digestion "?

Not just that but they only mention people that survived!  What if I wanted to know what happened to Molly, for example?

This really threw me off. I'll admit I wasn't paying super close attention to this but this really really felt like it came out of nowhere more so than a lot of this movie. I don't remember seeing that dog in any other scene and there's almost no other songs and it's anachronistic musical style.

I imagine the writer or director just said "Titanic is big. Rap music is big. Snoop Dogg is big. So, rapping dog on the Titanic will be huge!"

I think maybe he's Fritz? The mom mouse mentioned telling Fritz and I seem to remember in one of my viewings ( I plead the fifth on how many times I have seen this movie) that he had a bigger part maybe I gave us a cut up version? I know that Cinco was super kind and mentioned that there was a longer less fucked up cut?

I believe his involved in the whole amulet retrieval operation, but he never raps again—which is a shame.

Also, why did Molly want a locket with a picture of someone else’s mother in it?

I said the other version was longer.  I didn't say it was less fucked up. 🙂

Yes, the dog is Fritz.  He says he's in charge of how the animals behave on the ship.  He's a less asshole-y First Officer.  He's the one who locks the cat and chihuahua in the cage.

I don't think Molly ever realized it was a locket.  She just said "Ooo, the Heart of the Ocean!" and was sold.  (To be fair she didn't seem to get much of a chance.  Wasn't the Titanic sunk the first night according to this telling?)

Since everyone's being kind to me about the longer version I'll just mention a couple things.  (I realize I didn't step on people's toes.  Sometimes mentioning another version before the commenting week can throw a wrench with people wondering which one to watch.)

1) The voice casts in the shorter and longer versions are the same but used in different ways.  One article I read mentions scene order being changed, lines removed and such to make the shorter version, but I only noticed one of those things (mentioned in item 3).

2) The songs used in the shorter version were written for the shorter version.  The rap is a rap but the background music is not.  The love song kinda sorta makes sense in the longer version but it's not in-your-face, repeated like I felt the shorter version was.

3) There was a slight piece cut from "Nanny's" explanation as to why Angelica was abandoned.  I'll have to watch the part again as I've forgotten the reason.  (Also the YouTube video is terrible quality, both video and audio.  The audio sometimes repeats for no reason I can see.  The video quality is less defined than the shorter version, sometimes making it seem like we're watching someone's drawings on a piece of paper as opposed to an animated film.

Here's the rap. Skip to 4:15 if the link doesn't take you directly.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how does the dog rapping help find the amulet? Because it seems like maybe the rapping was an unnecessary part of solving anything.

Yes, she definitely stayed on but didn't sing Nearer My God to Thee.  Weird.

Rest in Peace, Molly. You were surprisingly not as buoyant as we thought. <:(

This looks like the sort of fine, upstanding Englishman the White Star Line would hire to serve their first-class (or at least second-class) passengers.  He looks like he's wearing someone's hand-me-downs and the someone is several sizes larger.  Also, I think the voice in this scene is different than the voice through the door when he shows up at Angelica's cabin.  Thirdly, there was a downblouse shot shortly before this.  Seriously, a downblouse shot in a kid's movie!

I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS RAP! WHAT IS THIS?! WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW?! Two dog raps?! I feel... I don't even know. I'm in a state of Shock. I need one of those blankets.  How did I live my life without this equally shitty dog rap?

Here's the whole mommy/daughter introduction.

I'm sorry but what?! Why *exactly* were you "forced" to give up your child? It sounds like you weren't an unwed mother, and you were paying for her care so financially it sounds like you weren't in too much trouble. So what happened?! What did Angelica defeat the Dark Lord as a baby and had to be brought up by muggles? I certainly wouldn't be as ok with that lame ass explanation as Angelica but as I have previously mentioned she's not sober enough to understand what is happening around her. Also she NEVER thought she was abandoned? What did she think she was kidnapped?

Does this not seem weird ? Like is he in charge of *pets* or is he just friendly with all animals vermin included? You know because the one thing that any ship wants is a dog in change of the rats and mice but like... I'm charge their social activities and party time.

Also, he has FOUR FINGERS per hand.  He might be related to the Lost statue.

WTF is a downblouse?  I googled it and all these porn links came up so I didn't click on any.

So my big question was did they give this movie to like three different animation studios so they could get it out faster? There are so many different styles and quality of animation. You have the cartoony people, the more realistic people and then the animals. There is no consistent style for any of them or any reason. If you were to tell me they took two separate movies about the cruise ships and tied them together by doing their own in house animated sequences I would 100% believe you.

Did anyone else think the old woman on this ruined them of Granny from the Looney Tunes cartoons?

When she gave the main woman her dress to wear, she said something about being thinner in her younger days, but she's a foot shorter too. There's no way this dress should fit.

This movie was mind-blowing to me in that it somehow avoided massive lawsuits from Disney and Warner Brothers. As mentioned by someone previously , it is a hodgepodge of a half-dozen Disney films with the worst, most racist elements of Looney Tunes thrown in for good measure. Then they take this shitty concoction (complete with sub-Hanna-Barbera-level animation) and smear it all over a real-life tragedy! Maybe the rapping dog was a nod to Scooby or Scrappy-Doo? Who knows? That this is made for kids is offensive on so many levels that it needs a tomato meter score that goes below 0%.

Having said that, I think more horrific tragedies should get this artistic treatment.🤪

So the detective guy, if only he said his name or had a catchphrase about his name, was clearly suppose to be Sherlock Holmes right? He had the deerstalker at the start and the pipe. Yet for some reason they decided to make him a New York gumshoe. Did they think that would be funnier in the dub or was it suppose to be that way?

I thought it was weird they made him from New York. I know Americans were on the Titanic, but he's just a detective. It would have made way more sense to have him be English. I think you're right it's "funnier" was their thinking.

Speaking of unusual choices for character ethnicities, what was up with those mice? Why are there offensively caricatures of Mexican mice?

Oh fuck, their “mucho gusto/put on your dancing shoes-to” song had me baffled.

Didn't they explain that they were trying to get home to Mexico? So the first question is how did these mice get to England in the first place and then how are they getting back to Mexico from NY? That's the more interesting movie.

THIS MOVIE IS INSANE

WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?!

I tried to rewatch it because unlike gigi it was not as fresh on my mind and if my memory is correct I saw The Room, Titanic II, and this all in the same weekend in 2012, so I literally blocked everything except the Dog Rap out of my brain. But as I tried to rewatch I was struck by that first scene of the ship sinking how they just reused the same animation over and over as new things happened to the ship. It was too hard to watch that stupid girl's face go through the same surprise multiple times.

I think they were showing how stupid he was.  Like that was his idea of incognito.  "Everyone in Britain knows Sherlock Holmes so if I dress like him I'll blend right in!" levels of stupidity.

How did the stupid detective get an identical match of William's outfit WITH yellow hair to escape off the boat?  Was he pretending to be William so he could get off earlier/easier?
