The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990)

Recommended Posts

Andrew Dice Clay starring as a rock and roll detective with Ed O'Neil, Vince Neil, Wayne Newton, Morris Day, Tone Loc, Priscilla Presley, Gilbert Gottfried, Lauren Holly, Shiela E, Robert Englund, and David Patrick Kelly. With koala bears, a soundtrack by Yello, hearse chase, and a fight/chase on the Capitol Building. God bless Renny Harlin.

And God bless the pile of cocaine and the 4 month window in 1989-1990 or so where Dice as a leading man seemed like a good idea.

I came here to suggest this movie.

I first saw it on VHS when I was probably 8 years old and it made me really, really sad. What they do to that poor koala, and then its miraculous recovery just confused me, The Dice Man is the least endearing lead actor I've seen to date.

Perfect for HDTGM.

This episode NEEDS to happen. The movie is so ripe for the show.

Big summer blockbuster movie with massive advertising campaign behind it? Check.

Complete delusion as to the marketability of main star? Check.

Insane cast including Pricilla Presley, Robert Englund, Ed O'Neil and Wayne Newton?!!! Check.

Ridiculous action ala Renny Harlin? Check.

Box office bomb? Check.

This movie belongs so clearly in the wtf were they thinking category that it's not funny. The worst part is that even though I loath Dice Clay as a comedian, I find this movie entertaining as all hell and it's been a guilty pleasure for such a long time.

I agree with this recommendation.. but I'll warn you guys, if you haven't seen it's got Gilbert Gottfried in it.. LOL

looking at the IMDB page for this movie, it's all slowly coming back me..

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098987

Wow I forgot, Wayne Newton and Vince Neil are in this movie, together at last LOL

Sorta reminds me of harry davidson and the marlboro man.

another note: IMDB says

Oh I love this movie. One of my favorite bad movies for sure. A rock n roll detective? What the F does that even mean? Let's not forget supporting roles for Morris Day, Gilbert Godfried, and Ed O'Neill who was just finding his groove as Al Bundy.

I actually saw this flick in the theater when I was in high school. I think it would be perfect for the show. Entertainingly bad on so many levels. It blows my mind to think someone actually got paid to write that script.

i just watched this movie this weekend. not for the first time, mind you. i've owned this movie on DVD for years, as it was one of our high school favorites. i hadn't watched it in ages, when i had friends in town for a HS wedding this weekend. so we busted it out.

holy shit. my only regret was being sober while watching it. fucking incredible. this HDTGM must get made.

and to paul, june, and jason may i just say, here's to you...

I really want to hear their take on it.

Just found out about this movie. I literally can't even remember why - the Wikipedia page is just a tab in my browser right this moment and I can't remember why. I guess I heard someone mention it on TV? I dunno. But I looked up the trailer, and MAN - first thought, "Why hasn't HDTGM covered this yet".

Speaking of which, tsk, tsk. How could you not embed the amazing trailer for this thing? Well let me try here (though it's been awhile since I've posted on the forums):

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/j-vUpXEWpUs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Was, "You're a piece of Spam" actually ever an insult? Or a joke? Ed O'Neill with a porn mustache? This thing needs to be covered by the gang and a great guest. I was, like, 4 when Dice Clay was a major force in comedy, so I need someone to put this "phenomena" into perspective :D I need to know.... *say it with me*

HOW DID THIS GET MADE!?!

Bump. Please, please do this movie! It's beyond silly and implausible. A cheesey salute to the cheesey hair bands era.

I didn't care much for his stage persona at the time but I thought all the faux outrage about it was silly. I really liked this movie. It became a cult film in a number of countries. It had Maddie Corman!

And I thought Clay was also good in Casual Sex (as was Victoria Jackson before she went insane)

... but I don't "also like" Hudson Hawk.

"Robin Leach...I fucked him, OHH!"

Watching this now on Encore. Seriously wondering How Did This Get Made. It's an LA action noir directed by Renny Harlin at his height (after Die Hard 2/before Cliffhanger). The hair gel budget alone has got to be a topic of discussion.

I have to bump this. Ford Fairlane is perfect for How Did This Get Made? Let's go down the checklist.

  • Animatronic koala bear (that kills itself)
  • Inconsistent mix of (awful) voice-over and Ford Fairlane just straight up talking to himself
  • Ed O'Neill trying to sing disco
  • Gilbert Gottfried as a shock jock
  • Hugely inflated budget, due to the inexplicable flash-in-the-pan success of ADC
  • Legendary bomb at the box office (pulled after a few weeks)
  • Attempts to spin verbatim lines from ADC's stand-up as actual comedy

and sooo much more. I'm not even gonna touch the scene at Hollywood Forever.

I haven’t seen this since high school, but I’m starting to wonder if they’re actively avoiding it, because it IS a perfect piece of trash.
