Episode 64 — Tig's Cancer Diagnosis/Autism

Recommended Posts

True Fact: We all love Tig! Spend some time with Tig as she shares stories with us about her gratitude and support from good friends and how her peers are reaching out. Today’s episode also has a B-side as we check in with the professor to have a chat about Autism with our guest Steven Yates. Steven chats with Tig, Kyle, and David about  raising a child with autism, self-awareness, and perseverance.

Tiglet...2 minutes in and I'm a fucking mess-Tito just handed me some tissue-continue. Much love, MM

When all the autistic shouting and Tig was like "I have Cancer"..hysterical

You know how a tag line in "Strangers with Candy" was God dammit Jerri? The same should be on PB with Aaron. It's 5 stages of grief...Kubler-ross "God dammit Aaron"

Steven Yates was a great guest...aut spec: mmiceli0924@gmail

The reason Tig is surrounded by amazing people is because Tis is an amazing person. Tig has been receiving all the love lately but we love Kyle, David, and Aaron too! Don't forget that! I'll be sure to draw more Professor Blastoff blast-stuff soon! You'll always be my #1 podcast! =D!

Over the years Tig has been a sunshine of my life, even here across the ocean where I've never been able to see her live, but first on Sarah's show, then in podcast guest spots and YouTubes and then with her own regular podspot with Professor Blastoff and with her album.

All I can hope now is that she feels the sunshine coming back at her from all those who love her, from her closest of close pals on out to those of us who have been the anonymous but grateful fans, thankful that we get to share time on Earth with Tig Notaro and be warmed and inspired by the fire of her art. Every wish I have right now is going to her winning her fight so that we all get to share that time and that fire faaaaaaaaaaaar into the future.

Thanks for doing an episode on autism. Hits home for me because I actually teach kids with Autism. For the past 4 years, I've worked as a TA in a "self-contained" program for students in a middle school who have a primary diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders. (For some of the lower functioning/severe/profound--cognitively it was like elementary of course, but not all). The job can be stressful at times, however it is by far THE most rewarding job I have ever had in my life. I am fascinated by autism. Going into it, I was like David. I knew nothing about it. I didn't even know what autism meant. Working in special ed is such a team effort and it's great working in a collaborative setting with the teacher and various specialists like Speech Pathologists and OT's...everyone pitching in with such creative ideas and working together and meeting the needs of those kids. I love it. No matter much the job wore on me emotionally/physically (whether it was due to blowouts and what not) I constantly had to remind myself of why it's important to stick with it. These two films helped me do that: "Autism the Musical" and "Temple Grandin" Anyone who has ever dealt closely with someone with Autism--I urge you to check them out.

Steven, I always enjoy you as a guest. You nailed it.

Tig, Kyle, David and Aaron--respect.

Once again it was a joy to be a guest on Professor Blastoff!

We recorded this one prior to the release of the previous episode, so I was caught completely unprepared for Tig’s announcement. It was stunning. But her grace and strength were even more stunning. That kind of courage is very rare indeed. It has been great to see so many tweets from so many fans and entertainers supporting Tig and expressing love to her. I know not everyone prays, but I ask those who do to pray hard for her and those who don’t to send positive thoughts and love. Since Tig is not on twitter, use @blastoffpodcast to get your message to her.

Special thanks to my wife and son for letting me share our story with the world. To anyone dealing with autism, you are not alone. There is hope. Keep searching for the therapies that work for you and keep loving and hoping.

Thanks to Tig, Kyle, David and Aaron for inviting me back down into the hatch. I love all of you. It is a big deal for me to participate in a podcast I enjoy so much every week. It really makes me feel special.

And to the folks that enjoyed my little appearances, thank you for your kind words.

Well, that’s been comment.

I've never met Tig but I have a love and respect for her that I don't have for most of my extended family. Her stand up has always been an inspiration to me and stories she's shared on WTF made that appreciation grow exponentially.

Tig, if you read this, please know that my grandmother survived breast cancer before I was born. When I was little, I found a bra in her laundry room that had a built rubbery feeling boob shaped thing. That's how I would have described it when I was 6. My grandma called it her bonneygoggle. I still don't know why. She past away a few years ago at 83 years old. Cancer could get her. I guess what I'm saying is, maybe you can have your own bonneygoggle one day.

Great show as usual, guys. Kyle making fun of Morley Safer's marblemouth voice was THE BEST.

A million hugs and good thoughts coming Tig's way.

Great job keeping cool under those circumstances, and as a guest in general. Your personal story adds a level of resonance that the more science-y episodes (which, as a scientist, I generally love) with various experts can't touch.

Hearing Tig talk about her upcoming stand-up show really made me feel good now that we know how well that turned out and the outpouring of love that she's received since then. I'm also glad to hear that she'll still be going to New York and trying to maintain some semblance of a normal life, and that she has a great friend to help her through it.

On a lighter note, the Tig Wig discussion was an instant classic.

Tiggery, my grandma had the breast cancer 15 years ago. She said she wasn't ready to go and kicked that cancer in the teeth. She's still smoking her paul malls and helping elementary school kids cross the street in the hood. It'll be tough but if you can put up with those 3 goobers in the hatch for 63 episodes, I'm pretty certain you'll make it.

You've got a lot more swamp rocking to do.

You fit so perfectly into the dynamic of the show (and this one in particular) because you seem like a genuinely good person. I think part of the reason the hosts respond so well to you is that you're not only speaking on topics that you are an expert in, but topics you have your heart in. Thank you for sharing your story with us. It was very uplifting in the face of such dark news this week.

David's story involving nearly being hit by a bus and thinking of Kyle's riddles was really funny. What if that was just the first of deadly PB-related chance events that are going to happen? Kyle might develop a sudden dangerous nut allergy (that's nuts!), or David might drink a beer that was too cold (cool beer!) and develop a terrible brain freeze. Tig's got enough to deal with so she's excluded.

Just a quick note to say that I have written a book about my son's triumph over autism. It's called "Getting My First Hug" and it's available on Amazon.com (Go there through one of the Earwolf links!). If you love someone with special needs or know someone else who does, consider getting the book. Thanks. Any profits will go to an autism-related charity.

Here's a link to an interview I did about our experience and the book.

Love to all Blastronauts and all in the hatch!!
