    Dougray Scott must sit around thinking about how differently his life and career would have panned out had the shooting of Mission: Impossible 2 not run long, denying him the chance to play Wolverine.  But it did, and he ended up in this astonishing "romantic comedy" with wife Claire Forlani and a scintillating cameo (clearly filmed completely separately to Scott) by Gordon Ramsay:

    Interesting that the main villain (Botha?) didn't come up at all in the discussion - and that’s one of the reasons why this film is so bad.  For a great action thriller you need a great villain to match off against the hero - even a lot of the “Die Hard in a….” knock-offs have decent bad guys (Powers Boothe in “Sudden Impact”, Tommy Lee Jones in “Under Siege”.  This villain is just blah, no personality, no quips - even his death is poorly handled.

    Another point that didn’t come up in the discussion, possibly because the answer is too horrible to contemplate: amidst all the carnage - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PANDAS?

    It must be good, right? It's written by John Patrick Shanley ("Doubt", "Moonstruck" - but also "Congo") and stars the likes of Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Susan Sarandon, Alan Rickman and Harvey Keitel. But it's a complete farago of a film - a serial killer/rogue cop set-up with a massive slice of whimsy and sheer lunacy added - I won't spoil the rationale for the killer's identification of his victims but I'll just say it relates to the musical notation of Neil Sedaka's "Calendar Girl".

     

    The movie also includes one of those insane late-career performances from Rod Steiger, who is wearing a toupee that I'm sure what give June a LOT of pleasure. This is just a taste, which if these 4 minutes do not convince you that this film is worth covering on the podcast, then nothing will:

    Definitely agree with paulzero about Megaforce, that is an absolutely mental film.

     

    My main recommendation is "The January Man" from 1989. It looks solid on paper - written by John Patrick Shanley ("Doubt", "Moonstruck" - but also "Congo") and starring Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Susan Sarandon, Alan Rickman and Harvey Keitel.
