Wow, this is a tough one. For Von Trier, I'd put "Dogville", "Dancer", and (my favorite) "Melancholia" over "Antichrist", but this isn't an either/or episode.
Â
After I first saw this movie my thought was that it was one of those that I enjoyed, but I never wanted to watch it again. I did for this podcast, and still feel the same way about it. I don't think repeatability is necessary for admittance to The Canon, but I get such a visceral reaction on this. But not in a deep way. "Melancholia" hits me on such a profoundly personal level, and I just don't get that from "Antichrist". Ugh, I'm not being very eloquent here.
Â
In spite of your compelling arguments in the episode, I'm with Amy and am leaning on "no" for this one. It is a symbolic and meaningful movie that sparks thought and discussion, and that's everything that I love; yet it still does not quite hit the mark for me. I've never said to anyone, "You simply HAVE to see Antichrist." I'm in the "no" camp, but it's not a very strong "no".

Crap! I just watched this movie assuming that they had done it.
Now I really want them to do "Showgirls" as an episode.
That said, the movie is so INSANE, that I don't feel like I wasted my time.

Episode 70: BATMAN v SUPERMAN
in The Canon
Posted
I am going with "Superman".
Â
I think, as far as "last the test to time" aspect to the film, it holds up better much better. Also, as mentioned on the podcast, I think (animated series aside) the Donner film is the only cinematic venture to date to capture the aspect of the character correctly.
Â
Another reason that I am partial to Donner is that Tim Burton's "Batman", tame as it may seem by today's standards, added to solidifying the Frank Miller's "edgie" Batman as being the go-to Batman that people think of when the character is brought up. I'm with Grant Morrison. As hokey as it is, I enjoy the heroic detective solving crimes with his good chum. (keeping in mind that these are, or at least started out as, children's stories)
Â
Though, were the battle between "Superman 2" and "Batman Returns", I would probably vote for the later. Unfortunately, the tail end of "Superman 2" feels like the big battle scene was shot in a small airplane hanger (it probably was) rather than the streets of New York and when I watched it recently I was surprised that it simply did not hold up for me at all.
