Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

Sorry, y'all! Yesterday ended up being busier than I had thought it would be, so I'm just getting a chance to give my take. I'm curious what you mean about "scenes inserted for the sake of inserting them." Maybe you could give an example or two, because I didn't have any real problems with the structure of the film. And I didn't really feel there were many out of place scenes (with the exception of the weird almost sex scene where the lady is licking Golden's tail). I do wish there was more of the choreographed music. The shopping scene is probably one of my favorites in the movie, but a lot of the rest of the narrative songs are pretty slow and morose. I generally like the nightclub songs better than the other ones. I think what I like best about this movie is the mash-up of the familiar and the mystical. Cakebug pointed out that no one is really surprised to see mermaids. I like that it's just a "oh hey, this is a kind of curious thing we found." Even with their first appearance int he nightclub, everyone is just like, "Hey, that's a kind of cool thing I've never seen before" but no one is like, "Wait! Fuckin' mermaids are real?" I also really the movie thematically. Smoczynska has said that she views the mermaids as standing in for (among other things) immigrants. But surely they can represent any exploited group. When the mermaids show up on the beach, everyone's first thought is how to make money off of them. No one (not even Mietek) makes any attempt to humanize them or treat them as anything other than something to exploit - either financially or sexually. So the sisters are left with the choice of either humanizing/integrating themselves like Silver tries to do or just not really giving a shit and continuing to do their own thing like Golden does. Silver sacrifices her tail, her voice, and ultimately herself to try to fit into this society where no one has really welcomed her. Even the guy that supposedly loves her tells her that she's just an animal in his eyes. But Golden just keeps doing her thing. She doesn't try to change into anything different just to appease the people who are exploiting her. And in the end, that's why she survives. I think it's important that she killed Mietek in the end - not as a way of avenging her sister - but as a way of taking control over the people who have been taking advantage of the sisters for the entire movie.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, and I'm sorry that this was a bad episode for you. However, it's not "shutting you down" or "recontextualizing" to point out that they DID address the exact thing you complained about. And that even the people saying the "yay bewbs" stuff (which has been a running bit for Jason's persona on this show for pretty much as long as they have been doing movies like this) called him a fucking creep. If this was a show about representation or exploitation, it would be one thing. But this a podcast that makes fun of bad movies and the people that make them. It doesn't mean you have to like the people who made those movies, but it also means that it's kind of silly to rail against the show and the hosts because you had a bad experience with a filmmaker (especially when they call out the filmmaker for the same things you have problems with).

Did anyone else think/hope the reveal of the director was going to be him calling into the Explanation Hope Line to bitch at Paul? Look, man...

Also, I just started playing the episode and came here to write a post about how Paul kept saying "Welcome Back Carter," but right as I finished writing the post, Paul caught himself. Dude can never let me have anything.

    Episode 167.5 - Minisode 167.5

I'm with you on everything except the Monster Trucks love, Cameron (only because I haven't seen it). I tend to check out when it's schlocky 80s horror like Chopping Mall or Lifeforce or Death Spa. I don't know why, but those movies just bore me to tears. I still love the shows that come out of them, but I'm not going to sit through those movies anymore.
  8. The Gunter/Dieter song is the one that had me laughing the hardest. Anyway, this show is definitely getting thrown into my normal rotation.
  9. Yay! I'm so pumped that there's another (potential) Lure fan in here! I've honestly been worried that I would be the only person that would love this movie and that it would turn into a bashfest (although less-than-positive criticisms are totally welcome; I'm just paranoid about things like this). --- Side note: I listened to the PFT episode of Off Book, and I thought it was hilarious. I mean, it helps that there's a subplot. But I still enjoyed it so much. Can't wait to hear what Mary Holland has in store for my ears!
  10. I hadn't hear of it yet, but I'm 100% on board, especially because I see that Episode 2 just came out and has Mary Holland. Now I'm torn if I should listen to that or the PFT ep first! Yeah, but he's always done pretty decent when they've done improvised songs on Spontaneanation. It's not as strong as his non-musical improv, but it's definitely better than I could ever do (which, to be fair, is a low bar to clear).
  11. God how I wish there were a F&F musical...
  12. Okay. So...I've had a lot of time to think about this one, and I thought I had it nailed down for a while. But then a movie became available to rent on Amazon, and I had to call an audible. My whole goal in making my next pick was to choose a movie that was unlike anything we've done before. I'm going to give a warning that this movie is probably not for everyone. It's a weird high-concept movie, and even among my small group of friends who usually like most of the same stuff, there's a lot of disagreement. While I personally LOVE this movie, I think it might be quite divisive. But I'm hoping it will give us some good conversation. Anyway, without further ado, my pick is... (But I hope not)

Brie is the best, and Captain Marvel is one of the handful of MCU movies I'm really excited about.

Honestly, the ONLY thing that I didn't love about that trailer is that the main character isn't at all like he was described in the book. He's supposed to be an overweight kind of loser character (at least in the 'real' world), I wonder how true they are going to stay to Art3mis' physical characterization. But, on the other hand, I also kind of like that it's not going to be "fat schlubby guy makes girl fall in love with him." Everything else, though, looks great. I particularly love how they make the indoor parts of the stacks look versus the world of the Oasis as well as the IOI headquarters. Spielberg is still in love with Rylance, and I think he's adaptable enough to make a great Anorak. I really just hope Simon Pegg can nail Ogden Morrow. And when Simon Pegg is my biggest worry in a movie, I think it's doing okay.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

Yeah, there was one in particular that had an alarm.sound that startled the shit out of me. Usually, Paul transitions into those, so I'm guessing the transitions got cut out? It was a bit odd.

I think that might be actual post-Largo footage. The end of this ep got....awkward

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

So, you listened to the first five minutes where Jason did his normal persona thing and talked about the nudity in the movie, then turned it off and came here to complain? Because they definitely address the director's creepiness.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

When the first audience member at a live show starts with "Here's this shared universe theory that I have...", I know it's going to be a "meh" Q&A. Maybe they should be like, "We're going to have a live Q&A, but we're cutting this shit off when the first person comes in with a lazy shared universe Q (or talks about the first time they jerked off)."

    The Room for first timers

I recommend seeing it at the cinema screening. Not because Wiseau will be there (although his particular brand of crazy is fun to watch during Q&As), but more because it's something that's better experienced with a theater full of people that embrace the insanity of the movie. Yeah, people will yell at Denny and people will throw spoons, but honestly, that's usually more fun than what's actually happening on screen. If you want to watch it again, that's when I'd recommend showing it to friends. But the first time I saw it was in a really rowdy theater, and I had the best time.

Nah, Power Rangers was based on (and used stock footage from) the Super Sentai series, which is a long-running superhero/mecha children's show in Japan. Mecha is kind of its own genre, and there are a ton of subgenres as well. It's kind of like comparing Scanners to Halloween. They're both horror movies, but that's about where the similarity ends. Pacific Rim was a love letter/mashup of mecha/kaiju genre films. A lot of the things people blasted it for (e.g., the chain sword that comes out of nowhere at the very end and hasn't been mentioned a single time the rest of the movie) are conventions of the genres. Anyway, short answer: yes, Power Rangers, Super Sentai, Evangelion, and Pacific Rim are all mecha (or at least mecha-derived) properties
