Musical Mondays Off-Week 12 (SaraK's Pick)
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I've actually never seen this movie although I remember the titular song being EVERYWHERE in the mid-90s. I think there was some "Is this actually a musical?" talk about this movie previously (but it also could have been during a big debate my other film nerd friends had earlier this year that started with whether or not The Blues Brothers was a musical). I'm all for it; I'll take this before another Tommy. -

As promised, here are a few more pics. These all have the guest in them, so I'm going to spoiler them out. -

I might have started dozing off during the end of the movie. Then all the crazy shit happened, and I was wide awake. -

Yes, meet up! JammerLea even made sweet Kumite pins for us! It was suuuuuuuuch a great show. Now I get why they do live shows. It was so much fun, and watching their expressions and reactions to each other is amazing. And the mystery show was WONDERFUL. They played a copy of the 1988 movie The Telephone (just go read about it because there's no way I can describe it) that some rando handed to Paul on a Zip disk a while back, and it's fucking bananas. It's only 78 minutes, but it feels like an eternity that essentially just leads to a really horrible twist ending. Then Paul, Jason, and the guest (gonna put his name in spoilers so only click if you really wanna know) came out and did a Q&A on the movie and just about any other random shit people wanted to ask them. It was a smaller venue than the Timecop show, so it was basically just the three of them dicking around and telling stories. It was so incredibly fun, and I'm really sad Taylor didn't get to come with us! All in all, it was a really, really fun night. I'm excited for the episode to come out because it's hilarious, and I missed probably half the jokes from laughing so hard over them. -

Here's one I snuck before Paul said to put our phones away: I have a few more from the action poses they did for pics at the end of the show, but I don't want to give away the guest. I'll post them later with spoiler tags. PS - Taylor said she hates all of you. -

Wear what you want (as long as it's not a "What's Up Jerks" shirt so we don't end up being twinsies). I think most of us have less of a problem with the joke itself and more of a problem with it being the lazy go-to C&O.

Weird. I was trying to decide which goddamn mouse pun I hated the most. -

Also, RIGHT before that, Fievel hears violin music coming from that apartment, so he assumes it's his dad, which is why he goes to investigate in the first place. Then, they were like, "Well, this gentle violin music is just too tame for the fucking rager of a tea party we're about to have!" That would be almost as stupid as Good thing that never happened in this series.... -

Sorry I was MIA. I had a busy weekend and then ended up getting sick on Sunday/yesterday, so I just got around to watching this, and I think it still holds up really well (MUCH better than All Dogs Go to Heaven...). But one thing really bothered me. When Fievel first meets Tiger, Tiger quizzes him on his favorite things before they start the song "A Duo." One of the things he asks him is what his favorite book is, and Fievel says, "The Brothers Karamazov." Now, I know this was inserted because they're Russian. But there's no way that happy-go-lucky kid has read Dostoevsky, and especially not Dostoevsky at his most bleakly philosophical. So I got to thinking, "Well, what Russian Literature would be 1) immediately recognizable to American audiences as such and 2) would be age-appropriate for Fievel?" And after racking my brain, I realized that this is a stupid question because 1) who cares and 2) where the fuck did this kid even learn to read? This is a stupid thing to be angry about, but goddamn it, it's the hill I'm gonna die on. -
Episode 162 - My Stepmother Is An Alien: LIVE!
FisterRoboto replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I don't think it's that controversial. Hellboy 2 got a slightly better critical reception than the first, and I think it's a much better movie. -
Totally agree.
-
Yeah. Someone called into the Explanation Hope Line just to tell Paul that this movie was the first time he "busted a nut."
-
Attention dudes: literally no one cares what the first thing you jerked your pathetic junk to was.
-
But, like, what if they just cast Daveed Diggs in every role?

HB2 is good. I can barely sit through the first one. Pacific Rim is still miles ahead IMO. -

Oh, I straight up LOVE this movie unironically. But I totally know what huge gaping flaws it has, and I cannot wait to see it get torn apart. Also.... -

I'm on #teamtaytay here. Pacific Rim is a goddamn masterpiece. As someone that grew up on kaiju and mecha movies, it's a perfect love letter to the genres. Most of the things that I've heard people say seem wonky about it are tropes of the genre (e.g., Why did they wait until they were getting flown into space to pull out their miracle sword?). I love that movie so much, and it's the best English language film Del Toro has done. -

That's the one where he becomes animated at the sound of Calypso music because of a voodoo curse or some shit, right? I just remember it being absolutely bananas.
