Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

Yeah dude. I totally agree with you that it would have been better to mention Han and at least pay some kind of tribute to him. I just don't agree with everyone that's like, "OMG HOW COULD HE FORGIVE HIM?!" The movie might not have given you the catharsis you wanted, but it's not completely illogical that Dom would let bygones be bygones after he realized why Shaw did what he did and after he rescued his son. I also feel like there was another big thing I noticed in this viewing, but I can't remember what it is now because I followed that up with the shitshow that is The Circle.

Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

Maaaaybe he almost killed Brian's son, but I still maintain the Elena had already had the baby by the time Shaw comes around in 7. Ultimately, yes, Deckard was avenging his brother...in the same way that Dom and the family were out to avenge Han. It was about family, and Dom understands that. In the end, Shaw still saves his son, and Dom says he could see that he was out for revenge against Cipher because she screwed his brother over. He understands why Shaw did what he did, which is why he forgives him. Also, someone earlier said only Hobbs knew about Shaw. But Hobbs talks to him about it in the garage with the rest of the team around. And we have to assume Dom must have known from his time with Cipher. If family is the most portent thing, how do they not understand what someone else did for his own family? Also, something else I noticed tonight is that Dom solders the tracker onto his necklace while he's on Cuba. When Hobbs calls him to steal the EMO, he's soldering something to the necklace, which I assume is the tracker. So he had it the whole time, BUT Cipher told him not to tell anyone. He didn't know where Elena was, so he kept it quiet from his team. The biggest question is....how the fuck did Owen Shaw get out of the black site?

I'm writing this from the theater where I'm waiting on my second viewing to start. I'm sure this time, I will catch all the nuance inherent in this film.

Ahhhh that explains why I didn't remember her. I was like, "How did I miss Jena Malone?! I love her!"

I don't remember Jena Malone in BvS, but I'm in favor of more of her across the board, so I hope she's still going to be BG.

Ohhhhh....I completely forgot about that. I just remembered where he was talking about all the concerts he'd have to go to if he wasn't there for his daughter.

Is that what's happening here? It was just the only gif I could find of him saying "Tay Tay"

One of my other favorite tweets that day was Gail Simone asking Lexi Alexander how many people had asked her why the two of them weren't making the movie together. And I would watch the FUCK out of that version.

Be honest. You just like that scene because The Rock says your nickname in it...

Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

I'm all about Tatiana in everything. But I have to say I liked Scott Eastwood in this. The gang said they didn't like that the movie was trying to make another Brian, but I didn't think that was the case at all. They were going for someone completely different than Brian. For starters, everyone loves Brian, and Little Nobody is kind of a shitlord that everyone tolerates because they have to. I also think his inclusion gave them an out for Roman to punch down, so Roman didn't end up being the butt of every joke. And that's one of the things I really liked about it. That said, I wouldn't be upset if they brought in someone like Tatiana and let her actually do something (especially if it's more fights like Letty vs Ronda Rousey from Furious 7, which is one of the best fight sequences in the movie - save for Rousey's delivery of her single line). This x 1,000,000. Except I think Justice League looks like a step up for DC. The CG is fucking awful, but it doesn't look like it's going to be as much of a chore as, say, BvS or Suicide Squad.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I had a good laugh at Paul saying it "sum a bitch" (He clearly didn't grow up in the south)

Also, all this talk about The Rock vs Vin Diesel hotness, and y'all missed the sexiest fucking dude in the movie... And, unrelated, but I have to say I wasn't into the Kid Rock-style intro until they got to the "Where does the butt start" line. Also, that theme should only be played with Jason's giggles in it.

Vin also had Jaa in the latest xXx, and they totally wasted him there, too, because Donnie Yen 100% outshines him.

Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

Okay, so I don't think the baby timeline is all that crazy. Here we go: Fast Five - Dom and Elena meet. She somehow falls in love with him when he comes to get his cross back from her apartment and puts his fucking sausage fingers over her mouth. Fast Six - Opens with Dom and Elena in bed together. Sometime here or slightly before is when she got pregnant. The movie takes place over a couple weeks. Tokyo Drift - Move takes place over...let's say a year and a half (there's no clear indicator, but that would make sense for Han to move over to Tokyo, set up his operation, and train that hillbilly shitlord Lucas Black). The baby is born, and Elena starts back to work. Assuming she's just barely pregnant at the beginning of Fast Six, that would make the baby roughly 9 months old by the end of this movie. Furious 7 - Takes place immediately after TD. Assuming 3 months of maternity leave, Elena has been back at work for about 6 months at this point, and the baby is still roughly 9 months old. The movie takes place over a matter of weeks. Hell, to be generous, let's call it a month (although I think it's more likely closer to 10 days or so). Baby's age at end of movie: ~10 months Fate of the Furious - Baby is roughly 10 months old. Boom. And I know people are going to be like, "Why didn't she mention it to Dom in the hospital in 7?" Two things: 1. Hobbs is injured, and he's there to see him 2. She's still wrestling over whether or not she should even tell him. (And also, they hadn't come up with the idea of the baby yet)

This is exactly what I was hoping for when you mentioned there was going to be a This Week in Feminism post. She's actually pretty good in Fast Five. Hobbs picks her as the one honest cop he can trust in Brazil, and she gets to work with the crew. I've been disappointed that they haven't used her as much since then. Then they introduce her here just to fucking fridge her (which was obvious as soon as they showed her the first time). I was pretty upset about that, too. I mean, she did also date Vin Diesel IRL... (not that that negates your other points)
  20. I wish this was how they had her dress for the rest of the series.

Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

I don't think he knew at the time that Cipher was pulling the strings. But the opening is what gives me pause about the whole "Owen Shaw is really a good guy" thing. He basically blows up an entire fucking hospital full of people who are just there to keep his brother alive. He's clearly on a villainous rampage. (Sorry for all the double-posts y'all. I have a lot to say about this movie/series that I've been holding in for a couple weeks)

Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

I don't think anything falls into the "trilogy" archetype. 1, 2, and 4 certainly don't strike me as any kind of a trilogy, unless you're saying they're the "Pre-Rock" movies. But all three of them feel like very different movies, so there's nothing even really tying them together thematically. I could see 5-7 as sort of "Brian and Mia's Story" because 5 is when they announce she's pregnant, and 7 is where he leaves the gang to be with his family. But I could also see 6-8 as a "Shaw family" trilogy. Again, though, that's if you force the trilogy archetype onto these. Overall, I think they're largely standalone adventures.

Episode 161 - The Fate of the Furious

In the early 70s, George Lucas wrote a script for a movie that was a throwback to the action serials he loved as a kid. The idea was that the movie would have "only the good parts" from the movies without the sequences he felt were either padding or that slowed the action down too much. Almost ten years later, he and Spielberg released that movie as Raiders of the Lost Ark. This "only the good parts" mentality is why Indiana Jones movies are usually action set piece after action set piece. Exposition is brief and only used to set up the next set piece. Lucas and Spielberg developed the films largely by coming up with the set pieces and then building a story around them. They're largely devoid of the kind of intricate, "worldbuilding" lore we see in today's blockbuster series. The stories largely serve as standalone tales that can be enjoyed with little to now knowledge of the other films in the series. By design, you can jump in at, say, The Last Crusade and get pretty much everything out of it without having seen either of the previous two films. So, to that effect, the F&F films are really the cultural heir to the Indiana Jones series. They aren't the same kind of action/adventure movie, but starting with the fourth movie, these each become largely standalone movies based around action set piece after action set piece. Sure, there are things you understand more fully if you've seen all of the movies, but no one I know has been lost going into 7 or 8 without having seen the previous movies.
