Episode 160 - The Lake House: LIVE!

I thought that was weird, too. I think it was just lazy screenwriting to get us to the point of them knowing they were in different times. But think about this: what if they didn't reveal the fact that they were in different times until when they try to meet up? Like, it's seemingly just a pen pal relationship, and they could say, "Meet me for dinner on X date at Y time," and then they both go to the restaurant, and the other one doesn't show up. And then you're reveal is at the end of the second act, and the third act is them trying to get together. I also think that the car crash is telegraphed far too obviously in the opening. If it were how Sandra Bullock was introduced in the movie (e.g., here's a young doctor hard at work who loses a patient), it would be one thing, but it's almost at the same time they realize they are two years apart. If you pushed the reveal of them being two years apart to the end, I think it would be a lot less obvious that it was him (also, maybe don't have him wearing VERY similar clothes to the guy that was killed throughout the whole fucking movie). -
Episode 160 - The Lake House: LIVE!

Timecrimes is the shit, y'all! It's actually a Spanish movie about a guy who witnesses a murder. When he goes to investigate the body, he is attacked by the masked killer and escapes to a nearby building, which turns out to be this scientist's research lab. The scientist hides him in a large vat that turns out to be a time machine that creates a loop. It's fucking awesome. It's currently streaming on Amazon Prime. AND it's directed by Nacho Vigalondo, who is the director of Colossal, which everyone should go see, too, because it's really great (but even harder to talk about without giving anything away) -

Here's where he straight up mauls her face: Genuine question: how does Kate get the dog? I thought it was when Alex gets hit by the bus (like, the dog was with him but somehow survived), but I just rewatched it and she has Jack in her timeline BEFORE Alex gets hit. Did Keanu just give up the dog with the house? Because he's a real shitty pet owner if so. Also, his first letter to Kate is this: Okay. If you saw the pawprints being made, and they are clearly at your house, the fucking letter OBVIOUSLY isn't meant for "the Sandberg house." -
Musical Mondays Week 9 Pete's Dragon (1977)

I like Renner, too. The first Avengers movie was the first time I wasn't like, "Oh cool. Some dildo with a fuckin' bow and arrow...." Of course, the Fraction run made Hawkeye an even better character, but I think Renner is just fine with the direction they've taken him in the movies.- 184 replies

I am SUPER excited for that movie. My friend saw it last year, and he liked it a lot. It's gotten kind of mixed reviews, and he said he sees where the criticism comes from, but it's still cool. Also, Neon (Alamo Drafthouse's new distribution company) is totally killing it right now. They just released Colossal (which every should see because it's awesome. They've got The Bad Batch, and they just picked up this movie, which looks really funny: Note: it's a Red Band trailer, but that's just because of some swearing in the first bit.

I absolutely loved it. It's probably my second favorite (Five will always be my favorite, but this one comes pretty close in my book). Also, my whole theater was totally into it, which made it an even more enjoyable experience. There was much laughter and applause.

I'm seeing it tomorrow night, and I am SO PUMPED. Here are two things that are tiding me over until then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQuc7wfO16Q And also this data-based series of diagrams that shows how the series has gotten empirically since Fast Five: https://www.bloomber...st-and-furious/ The one thing I've read so far that gives me pause...

I've got tickets to the first show Thursday night. I'm going with four friends and ordered us all Dom necklaces, and Amazon forgot to ship one of them. Soooo now I'm on the phone asking them if I can get a replacement in time.

I like the first one a lot. IM2 and the first Captain America are the only ones that are "bleh" for me in Phase One.

Not to mention eggs delivered by a guy whose sole mission seems to be finding a way to be in front of Pete and Elliot while carrying a ridiculously large stack of egg crates.- 184 replies

Also, I've loved the previous Thor movies. It's shocking to me that people that dig the MCU will bitch about Thor films in the same breath that they praise Loki.

Musical Mondays Week 9 Pete's Dragon (1977)

She's woman, indeed. The funny thing is that Helen Reddy obviously has the best voice in the movie, but both of her big songs are sooooo boring. I totally checked out during "Candle on the Water." And while the Gogans' songs are catchy, their lyrics are super upsetting. One is about all the inventive ways they've thought up to torture this orphan, and the other is about how they somehow legally purchased a human being as a slave.- 184 replies

Musical Mondays Week 9 Pete's Dragon (1977)

I wish the remake had had a Dr. Terminus-type character, just because I really want to see Walton Goggins (hands down my favorite character actor working right now) play that role.- 184 replies

Musical Mondays Week 9 Pete's Dragon (1977)

So, I still enjoyed this movie, even though I realize it has a lot of problems. And it's definitely a LOT better than the remake, which I didn't like at all. There's a lot of stuff that would not fly in a kid's movie today. The Gogans straight up buy an orphan to use as slave labor (although, to be fair, in the remake, BDH steals Pete from hospital and no one says anything). Lampy and Hoagy are drunk for major chunks of the movie. When the Gogans return, the brothers fight over who's going to get to "hold" Nora in the rapiest way possible. But, ultimately, Elliot is what makes the film work for me. He's fucking adorable, and I felt bad for him every time Pete was a dickhead to him. He's a goddamn dragon that's used to living in the woods; he doesn't know how to mix into society. Don't get mad at him because you put him in a situation designed for him to fail. I really like Elliot, but when he leaves Pete at the end, I was like, "Good. Fuck that kid. I hope the Gogans come back after Elliot is gone." Also, the whole Paul storyline was REALLY weird. My best guess about it is that they felt the need to explain why Nora was an adult woman in her 30s who lived alone but wasn't some stereotypical spinster. "Look, she's not weird or anything! The love of her life just disappeared and she's holding out for him to come back!" Side note: when they first showed the picture of him in the lighthouse, I had forgotten that he comes back at the end, and for a second, I thought it was a random picture of Burt Reynolds. I wish they would have dropped that storyline and chosen either the Gogans or Dr Terminus as the villains. Terminus didn't really need the Gogans' help because he already had the whole goddamn town helping to catch Elliot. So it seems weird to have them show up out of nowhere (not to mention what someone else already said about them not even bothering to look at the nearby fishing town for all that time).- 184 replies

Musical Mondays Week 9 Pete's Dragon (1977)
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Well, maybe don't take a fucking dragon into town. There's literally no reason for Elliot to be with him at that point. He should just be like, "Stay here, and I'll check it out" like he did when he made him stay in the cave.- 184 replies

Guys, Pete's a real asshole to Elliott for, like, 90% of the movie. He sings that "I love you too" song to him, and then he just bitches at him for most of the movie. Then at the end, he's like, "Help me!" No. Fuck you, kid. You didn't want me around, so you can get yourself out of that sack.- 184 replies

As burned out as I am on Marvel movies, I'm actually looking forward to this one. Taika is the shit, and this trailer has a HUGE Kirby aesthetic to it, which I'm totally down for.

Musical Mondays-Week 4-Beauty and the Beast
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Agreed. I get what they were going for, which was to add more songs to the movie to make it more musical-ish. But none of the new songs really grabbed me. I also didn't like the changes they made to existing songs (ESPECIALLY "Gaston"). My biggest Taylor question is: how did you feel about Luke Evans as Gaston? I know you really like him, but he.....kind of didn't work for me.- 169 replies

Sadly, I'm a failure to my namesake and only just watched season 7 when it hit Netflix (the DLM Challenge last year meant I lost a lot of my TV time). I'm planning to check out the new episode soon!- 156 replies

Musical Mondays-Week 4-Beauty and the Beast
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Soooooooooooo did anyone see the new Beauty and the Beast? I just watched it today, and....I have a lot of thoughts. I don't want to add spoilers for anyone that hasn't seen it yet, but, generally speaking, what did you guys think? Side note: I almost PM'd Taylor directly to see if she saw it, but I figure others might have thoughts, too, and I want to hear all of them- 169 replies
