    Musical Mondays-Week 8-Rent

For me, that performance is kind of the key that unlocked the rest of the story for me. During that scene in the movie, I was like, "Am I supposed to be taking these people seriously?" And when I watched the stage version is when I realized the answer was....sometimes.

    Episode 159 - Sleepwalkers

I'm only halfway through, so I'm going to potentially be one of those annoying people that comments on something the gang corrects in the last half of the episode. But Glenn Shadix' character in Beetlejuiceis Otho ("oh-tho" with an unvoiced "th") and not Otto. He's not a mechanic in the 50s

LAUREEEEENNNNN!! She's another one I had to double-check to be sure she wasn't on a previous episode because it seems CRAZY that it's taken this long for her to be on.

I will say that the artwork on Jester King's bottles is AMAZING. My friends and I bought a couple bottles of Black Metal before we even heard of the brewery based on the artwork alone.

Y'all don't know fixed-gear bicycles? They're the worst invention ever. You have to keep pedaling all the goddamn time. I rode one once, and it made me want to punch the hipster it belonged to. They're almost as bad as recumbent bikes.

I think it might be kind of a pain unless you can find it on tap somewhere. 512 doesn't bottle, so if you want any to drink at home, you have to buy a growler and get it filled.

I have, but that's a weird-ass choice. Jester King mostly makes sours, so it's strange to see that chosen as the best Texan beer. I like them, but I prefer Commercial Suicide and Black Metal. But I wouldn't even call Jester King the best Austin beer. I prefer Thirsty Goat (whose brewery, Thirsty Planet, is right up the street from JK), almost anything Real Ale makes, Live Oak Hefeweizen, or Hops and Grain's 787ö2 (probably my favorite summer beer). When I used to live in Fort Worth, I used to go to Rahr and Sons all the time because I lived about a mile away and could walk home if I made bad choices. All of their seasonals are really great, but any of their special edition beers are worth picking up if you find them, especially Snowmaggedon and Bourbon Barrel-Aged Winter Warmer.

Revolver's okay. It's the best that Granbury can do (fun fact: I used to live in Granbury, and it's the wooooooooooorst) Real Ale = where it's at (or 512, but that's just because Pecan Porter is the greatest thing ever invented)

Did anyone else think the "meatless balls" joke was a setup to a gay/trans joke? Because then Tom says, "It tastes the same." Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but given that - as Taylor pointed out - they use "she's a lesbian!" as a joke a few times, I wondered if it was another joke that maybe hasn't aged very well.

I don't know how to say this without it sounding like a self-important humblebrag, so I'm just going to blow past it and assume y'all know that it's because it's integral to my point. Anyway, I volunteer a lot with an organization that does work with immigrants in Austin. One of the big things they stress during demonstrations is being there to support and amplify rather than make it your thing. So, you're there to basically 1) give a bigger audience, 2) help keep people out that are trying to disrupt, and 2) redirect anyone from the media that might try to talk to you (they often will go to white people first, and they tell us to redirect to one of the organizers. It's Austin, and they always have permits, so we never have any issues with police, so it's not quite the same, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I didn't take Joanne as the person she cheated with. It sounded like she either left him for her or that they got together after Maureen and Mark broke up. But I didn't get the feeling that he was like, "She cheated with you..." I think both readings might hold and that it could be open to interpretation, but I'm not sure. And clearly the only answer is to watch the stage version 20 more times. But I just got 7 F&F movies in on Blu-Ray, so it's gonna be a minute before I get to that

That's really interesting. I read that TOTALLY differently. I took it as Maureen had never, for example, called her "Pookie." So, when Mark says that, she's like, "Oh, she never calls me 'Pookie.'" Then, later, when she DOES call her "Pookie," she's like, "Ohhhhh, this is the sign!" I love when people can watch the same movie and come away with different reads on the exact same scene. Another good example of that is the Black Men Can't Jump in Hollywood (an awesome podcast focusing on black actors and representation in big-budget films that I encourage everyone to check out if you're not listening already) episode covering Get Out (NOTE: we use spoiler tags to fuck around a lot, but there are for real some minor spoilers for that movie under this tag). That's a bit of a detour from what we're talking about, but 1) I get really excited when people read scenes completely differently, and 2) I have not gotten to talk about what a fucking masterpiece Get Out is nearly enough.

I don't want to detract from the point you and tomspanks are making, but I am very curious: do you think Maureen ever cheats on Joanne? I guess I took it at face value initially, but this is twice you've mentioned that maybe it was Joanne just being suspicious because Mark planted the idea. And it now makes me wonder if she ever really cheated on Mark. She's definitely flirty (and, regardless of whether she cheats or not, if you're in a monogamous relationship, flirting with someone else at your engagement party is a little fucked up), but maybe Mark was just overly jealous and insecure? They seem to get along better than I would expect for a couple where one was caught cheating.

I think there's a difference between two comedians having similar ideas and one comedian blatantly stealing a bit from another. For example, people have ripped apart Amy Schumer recently for that video that "proves" she steals jokes because she has a couple minutes that are similar to Patrice O'Neal's (which are similar to things that have been discussed and joked about over and over since Urban Dictionary was a thing). She's had similar jokes to Tammy Pescatelli and Amy Madigan, too, but none of them are such amazingly novel ideas that others haven't thought of them before. On the other hand, if you look at Carlos Mencia, he did whole bits lifted almost word for word from other comedians. It wasn't a matter of "Oh, we had similar ideas." It was clearly him doing someone else's bit. There are other examples, too, like Jay Mohr's SNL sketch or Denis Leary doing Bill Hicks for....pretty much his whole career. So yes, I agree that it's not worth destroying someone's entire career because a couple of jokes are similar, but when someone builds their whole career off of someone else's material, I think that's a bit more of a problem.

Also, presumably, La Boheme exists within the Rent-iverse because in "La Vie Boheme," Mark says Roger will write a song that doesn't remind them all of "Musetta's Waltz"...which is from La Boheme. So why are none of them like, "Hey, we're living that opera!"

David Rakoff was a total genius, and that piece picked apart many of the small things that bother me about the musical (and that Cam Bert seems to hit on). It's also part of why I hate Mark: he's a privileged proto-hipster that doesn't want to pay rent. He's surrounded by homeless people and people straight up dying from AIDS, and everything is still about him and his "artistic integrity". He's kind of white privilege in a nutshell. I keep thinking of that line in the song "Common People" that says "If you called your dad he could stop it all." It's ultimately also why I do like the scene with the homeless lady that's been mentioned a couple times in response to this. Also, the homeless people are a chorus ITSV, and I think it works even better. And as far as Cakebug's theory about Rent becoming the phenomenon it did, I totally see that, and it's something I was thinking about while watching the movie (because I was trying to figure out why something so mediocre was so beloved). It's definitely an amazing stage production, but I think you're right that the buzz around Rent is what propelled it initially from being a beloved but underseen to full blow phenomenon. I have another thought related to this, but I'm about to run into a meeting, so I'll have to hope I remember it when I get out

It took me, like, 10-15 of those to realize Cameron wasn't posting song titles. I was like, "Damn, I thought I knew WAY more of these!" I might have skimmed the instructions. That counts for something, right?
