Musical Mondays Off-Week 4 (Cakebug Tranch's Pick)
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I really want this to just turn into a fight about the Beatles vs their covers in the movie between CakeBug and Cameron. Having no horse in the race, it's pure entertainment.- 287 replies

If y'all don't watch Difficult People on Hulu, you're missing out on the 2nd best Urbaniak (behind Venture Bros, of course).- 287 replies

OMG Y'ALL I know it's not a trailer, but I'm SO EXCITED for It Comes at Night. I'm hoping we get a trailer in the next month or two (I'd expect it to be bundled with Free Fire in April at the latest). It's written and directed by Trey Edward Shults, who did Krisha. That was one of my favorite movies last year because he accomplished so much with so little. And many of the film's most impactful moments use the horror film elements (especially framing and lighting), so I'm excited to see an actual horror movie from him. Also, it's being distributed by A24 (who signed him for his second film before his first even got a full release). And it stars Joel Edgerton and Riley Keough, who have both been a pretty great streak over the last year or so. CAN'T. WAIT.

For the first couple outfits, I thought, "Oh, maybe his parents/grandparents just buy him stuff because they don't really know what he likes." I really liked Tigger from Winnie the Pooh when I was a very young child, and my grandmother used to buy me clothes at Christmas with Tigger on them until I was well into high school. They would just sit in my closet because I feel guilty just throwing away (or even returning) gifts that people give me. So I thought "Maybe his grandparents just get him terrible clothes." Then some of the other outfits come up, and I'm like, "Oh, that's probably not the case..."

Yeah, but that pasta robot still just has the one. And that's a real crime.

Why hasn't Aziz Ansari been on the podcast yet?
FisterRoboto replied to Thrillhouse88's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Aziz and Alan Yang (co-creator and the inspiration for the character Brian) did a really great AMA back when the series premiered. Also, I read an interview somewhere where he talked a lot about his parents (who play his parents on the show) and how the series was really special to him because it was something very personal that he got to share with his parents. I love that show so much, and the Nashville episode is where the show went from "largely enjoyable comedy" to "complex commentary on modern dating" for me. That episode is the real line of demarcation, and all of the back half of the season is just perfection. -
Musical Mondays Off-Week 4 (Cakebug Tranch's Pick)

Head's fucking weird. My roommate when I was in my 20s used to get really high and watch it, like, once a week, so I've seen it a few times. Fun connection: Jack Nicholson co-wrote and has a cameo in Head. Maybe that's why The Who decided they needed him for Tommy eight years later.- 287 replies

i still think it's kind of weird that Edie McClurg basically tells Mitchell to get her son laid. She's like, "Oh, Mitchell, you get girls? Cool. Can you teach my son?" I'm also really confused by what kind of character Seth Green is supposed to be. When they first show him in the airport, he looks like he's trying for the kind of weird Bohemian aesthetic that surfaced in the early 90s (all black clothing, circular glasses with a tent, that fucking weird-ass pageboy haircut). Then they go into his room, and that's the first time I noticed the fringe on his jacket, which was the first of many times I questioned who this character was supposed to be. His room was kind of how I would expect, and then he grabs a poster of a woman in a swimsuit and stands in the middle of his bed to show it to Mitchell. I get that he's a teenager and all, but of all the things in his room, why is this the one thing he needs to show Mitchell? And that's just the beginning of his characterization. Much like trying to fit four movies into one, I feel like Seth Green is 3-4 characters jammed into one.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 4 (Cakebug Tranch's Pick)
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Me: Let's see what Cakebug's pick was for today... *6 pages of chatter later* Anyway, I'm excited for this one. I've been kind of eyeing it for my non-forums musicals, but I've also been wary because 1) I'm not really a Beatles fan (although that sounds like it might actually work in my favor here), and 2) all the musical fans I know have shit all over it. But I'm looking forward to checking it out. After Tommy, nothing can be all THAT bad.- 287 replies

Musical Mondays-Week 4-Beauty and the Beast
FisterRoboto replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
If you want an excellent companion piece to Assassins, you should read Sarah Vowell's Assassination Vacation. It focuses on John Wilkes Booth, Charles Guiteau, and Leon Czolgosz. It's kind of a mix of travelogue and history centered around those assassinations. I first checked out Assassins because she talks about it in the first chapter of the book (and if you like audio books, that version has a ton of great people reading it). So the two are kind of linked in my brain because they cover similar-ish subject matter and are both totally awesome.- 169 replies

Two of my friends from college were brothers that lived in Australia as kids. Their parents moved over there for work when the oldest brother was about 10. They totally loved it and look back on it as an almost 5-year vacation they got to take as a family. Anyway, with all this talk of the different school years and stuff, I have a question that's been bugging me. Are we to believe that Mitchell starts school on the first day (or first few days) of the school year? When he goes into speech class, they are giving introduction speeches about themselves. That would indicate it's the beginning of the school year, right? There's no fucking way a teacher's going to be like, "Hey, now that it's almost Christmas, let's get to know each other through expositional lists of character traits." So that would lead one to believe that it's the beginning of the school year. But when Mitchell flies in, there's snow on the ground. The best data I could find suggests that the average first snowfall in Cincinnati is November 28. And the earliest recorded snowfall was October 19. Then, I looked up the data on snowfall in Cincinnati from 1993, and the first snowfall was on October 30 that year. Assuming this movie was set in the year it came out, that would mean it's almost Halloween (at the earliest) when this class is FINALLY getting to know each other. This teacher should not have his fucking job. At all.

Musical Mondays-Week 4-Beauty and the Beast

I think we also shouldn't jump the gun on Musical Mondays unless the minisodes are late. That was the case this week, and it gave us a good chance to keep chatting about something while we waited for the mini. Then the mini took over, and we all fell into an abusive relationship with Airborne. I don't think I mentioned it before, but I'd prefer if we did it that way. Musical Mondays can only be moved up if there's no mini episode to keep us busy.- 169 replies

As someone who loves dogs more than kids, I wholeheartedly embrace this interpretation.

I love this movie so much, and if they did this, it would be a "Thank God This Got Made" episode. I know at least Zouks would be all about this shit. But, my favorite part of the movie is the very end. Oh, if you're wondering if this movie has Vernon Wells (Wez from The Road Warrior) wearing a chain mail shirt for most of it? It totally does.

So, I just looked up Brittney Powell on Wikipedia, and her page says: Of course, my first thought was "More than seven? So...eight"and then I looked a bit further down and saw that she has actually been in 13 movies. That's almost double seven! And seven is such a weird, arbitrary number to use. Why wouldn't you say, "more than ten"? I know! I also really love Danielle Schneider, but the only thing that could possibly have made this already awesome episode even better would have been for Emily and Kumail to be on together. ONE DAY!

That kid sliding under the car is so ridiculous, and I laughed so loud that it woke my dog up.

Mary Stuart Masterson is the best version of everything.

HOW THE FUCK DID SETH GREEN NOT KNOW THEY WERE SIBLINGS?! Some Kind of Wonderful is awesome. Mary Stuart Masterson, y'all...

We're talking about in life, right? Because that answer is also no.

You guys...I've made a huge mistake. I skipped Cage-a-thon at Alamo Drafthouse this year because I was finishing moving, and Nic Cage actually showed up! And he read "The Tell-Tale Heart"...because of course he fucking did.
