    Oscar pool 2017

That's such a delightful movie. It was definitely one of my top picks of 2016. Also, I just got home from Hidden Figures. If Janelle Monae had been nominated instead of Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting, it would 100% be a no-brainer on who that trophy is going to. She's amazing, and I want her to be in every movie ever. Spencer is still really good, too (the bathroom scene with her and Kirsten Dunst is simply amazing), but Monae really owns the movie for me.
  2. This. Also this. You're an animal... (But, Godfather is worth watching just so you can see Godfather Part II, which is SO much better) I kind of felt this way, but I watched it for the first time last year because a podcast I really love was covering James Cameron films. I gotta say: it's kind of awesome. There's all the stuff you know from cultural osmosis (e.g, "king of the world," "draw me like one of your French girls"), but I thought there was a lot more to it. For example, I didn't even know Kathy Bates was in it, and she has the best character in the whole movie. I think it's worth a watch, even if you think you know most of the high points.
  3. I think that's a great idea. There are a lot of major gaps I have with classic movies (I'm seeing Lawrence of Arabia for the first time this weekend, but I feel like it's worth it to have not seen it so far because I'm seeing it in 70MM), so I'd love an excuse to catch up on a bunch that I haven't seen.
  4. That really bummed me out. I grew up watching The MTM Show with my mom. So much of the television landscape owes itself to MTM. She was amazing, and I think I'm going to go watch the first three seasons of the show that are on Hulu when I get home today.
  5. Wait....are you or are you not getting a thumbs up tattoo?

    Oscar pool 2017

My picks for who will win are the same as Taylor Anne's. But since that's boring, here are my picks for who my favorites actually were: Film: La La Land Actor: Viggo Mortensen Actress: Ruth Negga Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali / Michael Shannon (tie) Supporting Actress: Michelle Williams (REALLY tough choice in a ridiculously packed category) Director: Denis Villeneuve (but really Jeff Nichols, who wasn't nominated)
  7. I'm watching this tonight, and I want to talk about it already. Ugh. I forgot how much I genuinely enjoy this movie.
  8. I won't lie and say that her appearance in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure doesn't contribute heavily to my decision.
  9. If you could hang out with a Go-Go for a day, which one would it be? (This question isn't meant to be creepy) I've always thought Jane Wiedlin would be a blast to hang out with. She's had such a varied career, and I bet she has the best stories.
  10. Tellin' lies, Well that's no surprise.
  11. This means we have to do the new one when it comes out, too, right? I'm really glad you picked this, though, because I've been wanting to revisit it. (Also, it was released in 1991 and nominated for the Oscars in 1992)

Why hasn't Aziz Ansari been on the podcast yet?

He did, and it was fantastic. His opening monologue was amazing It probably resonates more with single 30-somethings like me, but I think it's really awesome and very funny. If nothing else, it's worth watching for his dad. His parents are played on the show by his real-life parents, and his dad is totally adorable and surprisingly hilarious.
  13. They talked about the score a bit during the ep, and it's true that Stewart Copeland did write all the new music for it. But did anyone else notice that they used instrumental versions of some of the Queen songs from the first movie? They definitely use "Who Wants to Live Forever"in one of the scenes with Connor and Louise. And I remember there being at least one other (maybe "A Kind of Magic"?)

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

Definitely agree. I know I shit on it pretty hard, but I enjoyed the conversation!
  15. Or the hosts losing their shit on someone talking down to them... But I agree. The Howdies reminded me how much I love studio eps. The show started as friends sitting around goofing on bad movies, and that feel is lost in live eps. But as long as they keep making eps at all, I'll be thrilled.

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

I love musicals and have been listening to the soundtracks of every one we've watched so far (and the ones I've watched this year on my own). But I could live the rest of my life without hearing a song from this movie again and be perfectly happy with my choice.
  17. The Terminator opened at #1 in the box office. It made back 2/3 of its budget in the opening weekend and ended up with a box office gross of almost $80M (off of a budget of $6.4M). It was unequivocally a box office success and was the reason that Cameron got to make Aliens two years later.

    Paywall Special Announcement

Yes, there's a difference between us joking around with the movies and coming in and telling people they are "twats" for expressing their concerns. If you have something to add to the conversation, please feel free to do so. If you're just going ot come in and tell everyone to shut up, you have nothing to add to the conversation except to be rude to people. For clarification, I have had no problem with the paywall. But we can talk about it without name-calling and being jerks to each other.

My VERY FIRST "2nd OPINONS" THEME SUBMISSION!!!

I like the theme! Pedantic point: The apostrophe comes after "n" in the word "ain't" because it's omitting the letter "o" in not. (Fun fact: "ain't" was the contraction used for "am not" starting in about the 18th century because the "amn't" is almost impossible to say)

    Episode 153.5 - Minisode 153.5

That's not really something you can sue someone for (I mean, you can certainly try, but it won't go anywhere). It's more likely that the people that asked for the episodes to be taken down were friends of the show (like Jayma Mays), and they probably felt a little bad for hardcore bashing something their friends were in. But now that time has passed, things have likely blown over enough that no one is going to get their feelings super hurt about a 5+ year old episode going up behind a pay wall. It's fucking awesome. And Clancy Brown >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Michael Ironside.

    Paywall Special Announcement

I listened to one episode of CBB and didn't really get it (it's a hard show to get into from just a random episode). But the Earwolf homepage slideshow had HDTGM in it, and it was the LOL episode with Chelsea Peretti and Rob Huebel. I love Chelsea, so I decided to check it out, and I laughed so goddamn hard. I think HDTGM is a lot easier to get into from a current ep or an ep from the last 6 months, but I'm also a huge movie nerd and have an unabashed love of shitty movies, so this podcast was right on my wheelhouse. I definitely went back and listened to every episode over the course of the next month. I heard someone say it took them, like, 3-4 months, and that's bonkers to me. So I definitely understand the benefit of having previous episodes available. That said, I fell in love with this show so quickly that I wouldn't have had an issue paying $5 to listen to the back catalog (and I've been paying for a Howl subscription since the day it came out). I understand how others might not be in the same financial situation as me, though, so I'm glad there's something there for people that legit can't afford to go wasting $5 or $10 here and there on a billion different subscription services. Side note: my friend later recommended that I get into CBB through the Farts and Procreation eps, and I loved those so much. Then I discovered the Marissa Wompler saga. I pretty much only listen when one of my favorite recurring characters or someone I really like is on (my favorite eps are Jason and PFT). Fister's Hot Take: I skip Kid Detective eps because I don't think the "we're twins who fuck each other" joke that it devolves to every time is that funny.
  22. It's funny that this cut of the movie is called the Renegade edition. I didn't make the connection until Paul said "Lorenzo Lamas" during the ep, but the Highlander TV series, which follows the adventures of Connor MacLeod's clansman and protégé, Duncan MacLeod, used to play on USA every afternoon when I was in high school. My dad would come home from work and watch, Hercules, Xena, Highlander, and Renegade. The TV show was originally supposed to be about Connor MacLeod, but Adrian Paul requested that they make a whole new character so that he wouldn't be compared to Christopher Lambert and so that he could develop the character on his own without having to feel like he had to mimic all of Lambert's (somewhat questionable) choices. The only thing I really remember about the show was that every episode pretty much had a flashback to Duncan fucking different chicks in different eras. Edit: I should also note that both the TV series and the other sequels basically ignore Highlander 2 in terms of continuity.
  23. OMG I didn't think June was going to be in this ep because it was recorded the same night as Escape From LA. "All these words make me fucking sick." I love her so much.
