BONUS: A Conversation with Mel Brooks
FisterRoboto replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
It's so crazy that more people in the industry don't get this. I think part of the reason it's not as ubiquitous as it should be is because of the big theater chains. They partner with studios to be able to show their movies, and they often flex their muscles so that they can maximize ticket sales. Of course, major studio movies probably don't lose a ton from that, but there are quite a few indie distributors that release stuff on VOD at the same time it's in the theaters, and I'd be interested to see their revenue split between box office and VOD. (Drafthouse Films, my cinematic Mecca, even lists on their website where you can rent them) -
Thanks for telling us! I Was There Too is always on my catchup list, but this one is going straight into the queue for the ride home. Also, while we're on the subject of John Carpenter, did y'all see Guillermo del Toro's Twitter "rant" (not really a rant, but this seems to be the term we're using for anything people say that is longer than 140 characters) from over the weekend? It's pretty great: http://www.indiewire.com/article/guillermo-del-toro-praises-john-carpenter-twitter-20160523

She had pretty minor roles in Dangerous Liaisons and Baron Munchausen. She's pretty decent in Mad Dog and Glory and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. But, ultimately, you can be a good actor in a bad movie (case in point: I still enjoyed Ralph Fiennes in this film, even with the shitty, so-quippy-Joss-Whedon-could-have-written-it dialogue he had to say).
-
It's the very first scene in the movie, and it's dreadful (starts about 50ish seconds in).

This looks like the most boring possible crowd they could have found. But at least they used the old Turtle costumes and not the freaky new look they have (although Leo's eyes make him look terrified).

Kill Bill Vol 2 was the movie that made me realize how bad an actress she really is. That black and white scene where she's driving and gives that awful monologue was when I basically asked myself the same question you just posed. And to weigh in on the June discussion, she's fabulous and I love her. And she's never shy about speaking up when she really has something to say, even if it means yelling over Jason. There are lots of guests that I feel like weren't quite as bold about it (like Abbi Jacobson, which broke my heart because I want to hear everything she thinks about everything). But she should be in everything. I didn't really care for Grace and Frankie (but, then again, I don't think I'm the target audience), but she stole every scene she was in. And she's just as good - if not better - in Lady Dynamite. Also, Paul said that the new ep will come out next Monday because of Vulture Fest, but wasn't it recorded this past weekend? Was Paul confused about the dates (which I'm sure happens very easily when you're traveling and have a busy schedule)?

Is the theory that Uma Thurman is a (not-so) secretly terrible actress?

Foxes are closer to dogs and are in the Canidae family. Their catlike qualities are because of a thing called convergent evolution. The most common example of convergent evolution is flight (insects, birds, and bats all share this trait, but they all got there independently). Cats and dogs do share a common ancestor, but it's the same one that basically all carnivorous mammals share, and it dates back ~55 million years. Note: I learned all this at a party one night because two of the most vapid people I've ever met were arguing about whether or not foxes were canines.

I'm with Taylor Anne on #TeamShower, but a lot of that is because I'm 6'4", so tubs are inherently uncomfortable. Side story related to Elektra's thing about sleeping in tubs to get away from snorers: I went on a river float a couple years back for my buddy's 30th birthday. We all pitched in and rented this big house in San Marcos. There were 14 of us, and the house was supposed to sleep 16, but basically, it was two bedrooms with beds that slept two a piece, a room with two bunk beds, and the living room, which had two pullout couches. The first night we were there, we partied pretty hard. I woke up in one of the bunk beds and noticed this couple was in the other one. I asked them if I snored because I have a tendency to do that when I've been drinking (or when my allergies are bad). They said they didn't hear anything. The next night, I fell asleep on the upstairs couch kind of early. I woke up the next morning, and my friend (the guy whose birthday it was) told me that he went to the bathroom in the middle of the night and almost tripped over the same couple in the floor. They had tried to sleep on the other couch, but I had fallen asleep and was snoring really loudly. They were yelling my name, but apparently, I wouldn't wake up (I'm a super deep sleeper). So they went to the bathroom and slept on the floor. To this day, they exclusively refer to me as "Snoring Mike."

I remember seeing this movie in the theater in high school. Strange Days and Pulp Fiction were two of my favorite movies at the time, so I was REALLY excited about Fiennes + Thurman. I actually saw it twice because I was convinced I had missed something and that was the reason I didn't like it. (Note: the same thing would happen the following year with The Phantom Menace, except I re-watched it about 5 times)

Episode 136 - Hell Comes to Frogtown: LIVE!

Gonna start calling you Contrarian H. Really? You like Mad Max over Road Warrior? That's just insanity talking. Thunderdome is pure shit (at least, after the Thunderdome part), but RW is amazing. Also, CinemaSins had a disclaimer about how much they loved the movie but still made the sins video because it's what they do. -

Question: did you grow up with the Mad Max movies? I'm genuinely curious when people say they didn't like Fury Road. I grew up with those movies, and FR was extremely similar to Road Warrior in many respects. So I think my love of RW transferred into my love of FR. Anyway, I hope I don't come off sounding too defensive, but I do want to give a little perspective on why so many people love this film: 1. It's thematically rich. For a film in any genre, this movie is working with so many different themes. For an action movie, it's almost unprecedented. There are, of course, the feminist themes that also tie in with the idea of the female spirits of vengeance (i.e., The Furies). There's this idea of seeking an elusive paradise vs creating your own. There's populist rule vs dictatorship. There's a theme of death and rebirth (symbolized by bullets and seeds). There are many more at work in this film, but just those few alone are more than many more-celebrated films (looking at you, Revenant) are working with. 2. It's beautiful. The stunts are all practical, which grounds the movie in reality. But the color schemes and saturations are so fantastic (as in not based in reality; not as a synonym for awesome) that it gives the film such a beautiful and unique look. The car and costume designs are amazing. There so much painstaking detail in every shot. Even if you don't like the film, it's hard to deny that it's beautiful to look at. 3. The biggest complaint I've heard against it is "all they do is drive out one way and then turn around and drive back to where they came from." Cool. Swap "drive" out for "walk" and that describes Lord of the Rings in the same reductive method. This isn't as much a movie about the destination as it is about what happens to the characters on the way to get there. If you didn't like the characters, that's probably not interesting. However, each of the three main characters has their own arc, and while they are going through their arc because of experiencing the same events together, their arcs are wildly independent of each other. -

This would also be acceptable. #f8sogr8 Well, they did The Avengers last night (the 1998 one based on the British TV show; not the one about Earth's Mightiest Heroes), so I'd be willing to wager that's what'll be next. -

Ummm...guys, go watch Lady Dynamite. It's amazing. I'm only halfway through the pilot, and it's already had Nicole Byer, Lennon Parham, Bridget Everett, and Ana Gasteyer (not to mention that Maria Bamford is just fantastic as always). ETA: And Zouks just showed up! -

I've been so excited since they announced she was going to be in it. They announced that her name is going to be Cipher. FUCKING CIPHER. IT GODDAMN BETTER BE CIPHER SHAW! I can't wait. Now we just need to convince them to change the title to Infuri8ed, and all of my dreams will be coming true. -

She'd have to appear alongside Vernon. And then they could do another one with Sam, Shitstain, and Honeynutz. On another note, JUNE IS IN LADY DYNAMITE! -

I kind of want the whole cast of You're the Worst. And not just because of how much I love Aya Cash. -

No, OoofMaGOOF. Everything I get for free shouldn't inconvenience me at all! How dare anyone make any money off of this thing! They should all be happy to give their time and effort for my enjoyment. -

I have a Turkish friend from my old job, and he introduced me to döner. I'm a sucker for lamb, so it's a good backup to tacos if tacos somehow disappear from Austin (which would probably lead to a post-apocalyptic Frogtown). They're pretty goddamn tasty, too. -

Haha. Fair enough. I live in the taco capital, so I can't ever turn my back on tacos. But maybe if it was this: https://vimeo.com/90127834 Pizza? Now that's what I call a taco. And here comes Ryan Sz asking the REAL questions -

But, tacos = studio eps = small gatherings, and pizza = live shows = large groups. So I think we're saying the same thing. Unless you're fucking with me, and I'm just too dumb to pick up on it.
