This was my face when I saw the episode description this week: I haven't seen this in its entirety since I tracked down a copy on VHS when I was in middle school (it came out just a couple years before I was born and was really hard to find pre-Internet). But this year, it was fucking EVERYWHERE. I went to a Star Wars pub quiz last weekend, and they played it on loop in the background. As part of the preshow at Alamo Drafthouse, they showed a bunch of clips. I'm not super-excited to watch this piece of garbage again, but I'm REALLY pumped to hear them talk about how clearly intoxicated Carrie Fisher is or how almost unrecognizable Mark Hamill is in a couple parts because of how much makeup they used to try and cover up the scars from his accident. Also, George, sledgehammers aren't that expensive. And you just made $4.5 billion from Disney, bro. You can get a shitty sledgehammer for, like, $30, and a good one for about $150. That means Disney paid you 150,000 shitty sledgehammers or 30,000 good sledgehammers. For real. I feel like the audio "trailer" that Paul played had way more info about Flying High than about the Christmas Special. And the whole time, I was thinking, "What could this be that was actually allowed on TV in 1978?"

My friends got married a couple months ago, and someone asked them if the new Star Wars or their wedding was the highlight of their year, and they were both like, "I'm not sure that's a question I feel comfortable answering."

It was so amazing. The only people I've heard that have felt differently are those that either A) thought the prequels just "really get a bad wrap even though they're actually good movies" or are just naturally contrarian about anything most people like. How old is your son? Never mind. Doesn't matter. You're never too young to watch Star Wars. Take him!

Well, everyone in this thread is clearly just another account created by Michael Abelson as part of his elaborate ruse to game the CBB Best Of system.

A small part of me just wants them to only choose Be My Guest, Literally as the Best Of so that that dude has an aneurysm. Anyway, I voted for (in no particular order): Be My Guest, Literally Heynong Man Golden Duchess Cruise Lines Too Much Tuna Tour Is Y'all My Daddy? RomanTig The Brochelor (solely because "What Matt Gourley say?" cracks me up every time) Wompler's REAL 17th B-Day Womptacular NOT Farts and Procreation 4 Solo Bolo: Dos Lo
-
Oh, also, Lauren Lapkus is in Blended, so they should do it and have her be the guest.

It definitely wasn't his worst, but it had more WTF moments (starting with the "Africa as a singular place to visit and not a giant, diverse continent" premise) than a lot of his other ones. It's also not a total chore to sit through, though, and bad comedies usually are, which is probably another reason the crew doesn't like to do them.
-
I think it's because they generally stay away from comedies because making fun of bad jokes isn't really all that interesting. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing them do Blended, especially after Jason was so enamored with the trailer in one episode (can't remember which ep. Winter's Tale, maybe?)

SPONTANEANATION would be tied for first in my list. At least it showed up in their list of best episodes. I think mine would go: 1) HDTGM / SPONT (tie) 3) DLM 4) CBB 5) Thrilling Adventure Hour (it ended this year, so I have to find a replacement next year, I guess =\ )

Blockbuster would charge you for every little thing they could. My sister worked at one for a while. They would definitely charge for rewinding a tape. I think the idea was to discourage every single tape from coming back un-rewound, but it was still part of Blockbuster's "milk every cent you can" business model. A couple years ago, I started going to a local video store here that specializes in foreign and cult movies to pick up stuff I can't find online (they also have legit awesome and obscure staff picks). They all know me there now because I'm in there every couple weeks to grab a handful of movies. And their policies are almost laughably lax once they get to know you. I've shown up a couple days late with some movies, and they were just like, "It's cool." They'd really just rather you come back and keep renting shit than give you grief because you were busy or forgot to rewind a tape (yes, they actually carry VHS). But, yeah, I would love nothing more than to hear more of Paul's Blockbuster stories. That could be a whole episode, and I would probably still listen to it multiple times.

Yeah, that was a conscious choice by the director. WB used to have some production notes about Steel, but they've been taken down. Fortunately, someone archived them using the Wayback Machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20080411223603/http://movies.warnerbros.com/steel/cmp/production.html I'd recommend reading the whole thing (it's pretty short), but my favorite part is this quote from Quincy Jones: Ummm...I don't think "hero" is the part that refers to him flying or anything, Quincy.

EPISODE 38 - Beautiful, Fancy Apartment in NYC

If those are the only ingredients you put in your frosting/icing, I hope to never eat yours. Usually, you at least have milk, cream, and butter as well to help hold it together. Just adding sugar to water will basically just give you hummingbird food. -
I'm not sure where Paul got that from. Quincy Jones intentionally took away a lot of Steel's Superman ties for the comics and has said he wanted to make him more of a working class Batman. I've never heard the rumor before that this was supposed to be tied in to Superman Lives. My best guess is that someone realized it was based on one of the Supermen from after the Death of Superman event from the early 90s. Superman Lives was supposed to tackle that same storyline, so I'm guessing somewhere along the way, someone speculated that they were going to be related films. (Also, totally unrelated, but it bothered me more than it probably should have that they couldn't figure out whether the lead actress' name was Annabel or Annabeth for the whole episode)

Eeeehhhhhh....I can't get on the Aquaman hate bandwagon. He's actually pretty badass (Superfriends notwithstanding). Starting around the time of Infinite Crisis, he started getting awesome. Also, Jason Momoa is the least of that movie's problems.

I don't know about the second part, but the violence in video games thing goes back quite a ways (even back to shitty games with barely recognizable characters like Death Race from 1976). But ESRB ratings became a thing in 1994 because of content controversies.

I don't know what the hell a Silversun Pickup is, but it needs to get off my goddamn lawn!

EPISODE 38 - Beautiful, Fancy Apartment in NYC

It's funny how her characters bleed through, though. At one point early in the interview, she says the word "naughty" exactly like Ho Ho (Ho Ho!), and I wondered if she's even able to say it any other way now. -

I vaguely remembered them. Then i spent an hour on YouTube hatewatching a bunch of them. Here's probably the most 90s thing ever: -
The "are" comes after "you all." Just be glad he didn't go with the fun contraction "y'all're." Edit: Never mind. You were talking about his use of "your," and I'm an idiot. Can't help ya there, Cameron.

Same. That's really disappointing.

After Paul's tweet last week, I was really hoping LL would be on the show this week. And, of course, she is. And they're both on CBB. And there's a new HDTGM. It was a real conundrum figuring out what to listen to on the way to work. I had the same problem with the third-party app I use (Podcast Addict), so I had to listen to it on the Howl app. -
They can just complain that there's no new episode. Because apparently the HDTGM crew still hasn't figured out time travel yet in order to release the show they're recording tomorrow night today. Fuckin' amateurs.

I'm really hoping it's Monday, but I don't know how long it takes them to edit the episodes and such. In the meantime, if anyone is having withdrawals and REALLY needs to hear a podcast about how bad Steel is, We Hate Movies did it a couple years ago. I listened to it earlier this week as a warmup in lieu of watching the movie because I've been too busy to get to it this week. (I know that's the second time I've mentioned that podcast in this thread. I promise it's the last)

I forgot how much I loved this conversation. Any time Jason asks June what she thought happened in a movie is pure gold. But Paul starting in with "Did you really not see..." and the guys going "WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT!" totally kills me.

I'm assuming Paul has the Sphero BB-8, so if you DID want to get her one, that's a good one. One of my really close friends has one, and it's fucking rad. Now if you'll excuse me, just like Ball Droid, I GOTTA ROLL ON OUTTA HERE!
