  1. Guys. Is everyone listening to Off Book yet? I know we talked about it before, but it's seriously about to surpass HDTGM as my favorite podcast. Good thing it's on opposite sides of the week, so I don't ever have to decide on which to listen to first. This week's episode is the hardest I have laughed in a long time, so if you're not listening yet, try this one first and then go back and listen to the others (which are also GREAT). And then go hit up the forums threads for those eps. I want this show to have all the listener interaction it deserves.

    Episode 167.5 - Minisode 167.5

I hear another forum user you name-checked in your post might disagree with this assessment...
  3. The one where Zach got the character name wrong killed me. But I totally agree. I love that Jess can't help but correct him and watch him try to work his way out of it.

Yeah, I've seen John Wick, and it's great. The first thing I'd do in Atomic Blonde is have someone that can write dialgue take a stab at the script. There are so many shitty cheesy lines in that movie (starting with the whole stupid "cocksucker" line in the interrogation). Then I'd actually write the characters instead of making these thinly sketched people I don't care about. And then I'd get rid of the whole male gaze jerking off that constitutes half the movie. To me, this movie was the Boondocks Saints to John Wick's Pulp Fiction. It's a badly written, pale imitation that misses everything that was great about the original.
  5. Also, someone laughed really loud off-mic at one point, and I totally thought it was PFT for a minute (though I think it was probably Scott). This episode took me almost two hours to listen to because I kept rewinding to hear the funny parts again...and it's all funny parts. "Reno" was by far my favorite song. It's so silly, and everything leading into it is just craziness. Zach really just destroyed in this ep.

I thought Atomic Blonde was pretty terrible. I'm pretty sure the script was written by a horny 14-year-old that was just like, "Yeah, fight! Now kiss! Now boobies! Now more fight!" Maybe they're confusing him with Goldblum...

Episode 168 - Hard Ticket to Hawaii: LIVE!

I mentioned it in the last MM thread, but everyone should watch Savage's new show. It's REALLY funny. There's an episode that solely centers around what a manchild Zouks' character is and Andrea trying to get him a date. The two of them have such great comedic rapport (just like in Sleeping With Other People), and it's so much fun to watch them together.
  8. Oh, that "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" number looks very upsetting... Also, how'd the get Lumiere for the trailer VO?

And also RIP me because I will die from how great the episode will be.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

Mostly because of this: I would imagine their research brings these things to light pretty close to the time of the show, and the closer to the show, the more difficult it becomes to change the movie. They don't research these movies before choosing them, and again, I don't feel that covering a movie doesn't mean endorsing the actions of its creator. But I can only assume you have as much of a problem with Hard Ticket to Hawaii as you did with Chopping Mall?

Episode 168 - Hard Ticket to Hawaii: LIVE!

I agree with everything else you said, but Fun Home does have scenes where women talk about literature (including one where her college girlfriend reads children's literature to her during oral sex). I'm pretty sure there's also a scene or two fleshing out her mother a bit more, so it does technically "pass" the Bechdel Test. But again, like you said, that's not a full-stop measuring stick on whether or not something has a feminist voice. ON A TOTALLY UNRELATED NOTE: I had heard a few people talk about that show, but I haven't listened to it, so I had no idea she was the host. Honestly, when I think of Karen Kilgariff, I think of this sketch from Mr Show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Epw4Uf-h5w Her line read at about 2:35 kills me every time.

"Let me know when you're done with your fucking stupid face." Andrea Savage is the best.

Episode 168 - Hard Ticket to Hawaii: LIVE!

I came here to make a similar point after they mentioned it early in the episode, but I should have known you and grudlian would be on the case already (Someone in the previous ep thread called the thoroughly problematic last movie "feminist" because it passed the Bechdel Test, too)

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

Golden moves towards her neck, and the cop points a gun at her head. And, yeah, then she's on tv a scene or two later.

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

This has been on my list since I heard about it last year. I think it was on Amazon Prime for a while (or maybe Fandor or something?), but when I finally decided to watch it, it was gone. But I'm glad to hear it's really good! I'll have to remember to check it out next time I'm at the video store.

That was what I went with, too. Cameron's just a loose cannon that plays by his own rules.

We can all agree that's the best moment of any of the movies we've watched, right?

Musical Mondays - Week 17 - The Lure

I think it's definitely to try to get together with Mietek. He told her that she's an animal, and having human anatomy seems to be her way of showing that she is, in fact, human. I was thinking about something like this over the weekend. I think my ranking would be: 1. Beauty and the Beast 2. Hairspray 3. Hedwig and the Angry Inch 4. High School Musical 5. Rent (less so because of the movie itself and more so because it got me to watch the stage version and listen to the songs a billion times) 6. Cabaret! 7. That Thing You Do! 8. An American Tail 9. Krush Groove 10. Pete's Dragon 11. Repo! The Genetic Opera 12. The Fantasticks 13. Jesus Christ Superstar 14. Across the Universe 15. Tommy Didn't see: The Phantom of the Paradise Also, speaking of That Thing You Do!, has anyone seen Andrea Savage's new show I'm Sorry on truTV? Tom Everett Scott plays her husband, and he's actually pretty funny in it (and also Zouks has a recurring role).

    Episode 167.5 - Minisode 167.5

It's from Big Fan, where Patton is a pretty unhinged Giants fan that calls in to a sports talk radio show to argue with an Eagles fan.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

To amend my previous statement slightly (mostly because I've been thinking about the Polanski analogy you proposed), would it have been better if they had just hit it right out of the gate? I'm sure no one on the show knew what a creepy asshole Wynorski was when they picked the movie. I'm guessing that kind of stuff comes up during their research (and I'm not totally sure how much of that would have been uncovered by Paul and how much would have been Nate). And it's obvious June didn't know until the clip was played, so I would assume Jason wouldn't know either (since he often watches movies on the way to a recording, I don't see him doing a lot of research). I also don't know how much of that kind of audio Paul listens to. I would imagine that he listens to anything they play beforehand, but at the same time, they do have researchers, and maybe he just trusts their instincts? Or maybe he listened to it quickly and thought, "Yeah, this dude's a creep," but it didn't really register how bad it really was until he saw June's reaction? Or maybe he chose to put it at the end of the show because he didn't want to cast a pall over the whole show? So I guess I'm trying to figure out where in the show they should mention this. If they mention it up top, maybe it's a bit better because it prevents the whole "yay boobs" discussion and curtails some other discussions about the nudity in the movie. But at the same time, you could feel the wind pushed out of the show entirely after they played that clip, and that could be a really hard thing to recover from when you're trying to do a comedy show where people have paid money to see you make fun of a movie. So I kind appreciate what kind of situation Paul was in. Maybe he mentions at the top of the show that this guy is a creeper, but they don't play the full audio of his creepy, manipulative bullshit until the end? I don't know.

Random q: do y'all think Mietek supposed to be Kinga's son? Or does he just live with her? I couldn't figure out if they were supposed to be a family unit or if they're just a band that lives together (and two of them are a couple). Because my initial take was that Kinga was also using the girls as a way to experience the motherhood she wanted but didn't have. But I don't know if that's really the case because it's so hard to get a handle on the relationship between the Kinga, Mietek, and the drummer guy.

Episode 167 - Chopping Mall: LIVE!

I never dismissed your concerns. I said that I disagree with your statements like this: When they definitely called out the thing you are talking about. Outside of making the whole episode about that one thing, I don't understand what else you want from them. But apparently, it's "mansplaining" to a "railing woman" (whose gender I had no idea of until this very moment) to say that you are blaming Paul and Jason for simply covering a movie by a guy you (and they) find creepy. No, that's not my logic. My point was that they talked about it (including in this very part!), and you acted like it was something that was never even mentioned. And I get feeling grossed out by the "yay boobs" thing, but that is a staple of the show, which is why it seemed like you did, in fact, need a refresher on the podcast. Had you said, "I know it's a thing they do normally, but this felt really gross this time because of what a creep this director is," that would be one thing. Instead, you came in with an issue about a bit, seemingly ignored the context of that bit, and then when I disagreed, you said I was "shutting down" and "recontextualizing" you.
