Alden Ehrenreich is like a slightly less uninteresting Dane DeHaan.

    Episode 187 - Beautiful Creatures

So, I finally got around to watching this right now. It's the opening voiceover, and I already hate everything happening. "I can understand why young men signed up for the Civil War." This is gonna be a long-ass two hours.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

I don't think anyone said they were bad (at least, I went back and checked my posts, and I didn't). I just think it was kind of a lot. I don't think it's inauthentic or anything; it's just...boy is it an accent. I have a good friend that lives in North Carolina, and he has one of the strongest Southern accents I've ever heard. It's almost cartoonish, and even though I've grown up around all kinds of Southern accents, it kind of makes my head spin for a few minutes whenever I talk to him until I kind of acclimate to it a bit. So that's kind of what I meant. I don't have a problem with her accent; it's just a lot of accent all at once. Also, when I brought it up, it was kind of a throwaway comment because the post it was in devolved into me rambling about my family. So it was kind of a silly way to bring it back on topic.

I'm only on the third story arc or so. But it's "Petals to the Metal," which Griffin has said he based on Fast and the Furious. So, like....obviously, all of my other podcasts are on hold until I finish this story. My Brother My Brother and Me is definitely on my list to check out once I get through this. I think the McElroy brothers are hilarious, and maybe one day, I'll be able to tell Travis' and Justin's voices apart. Well, that's disappointing. I was hoping you sounded like .

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

That's the one! I actually just started listening to it a few months ago (because someone in my Pathfinder group was like, "Ummm why aren't all you idiots listening to this?). I love everything about it...except for three grown men calling their father "daddy." That's just weird, man. And I can't put my finger on what it was about Lansbury's accent that stood out. It was a bit over-the-top, but I'm used to that when anyone who isn't from the south plays a character from the south. I think it didn't help that the voice she chose for the character was SUPER nasally. I love Lansbury usually, but this character was....something.

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

So, my parents called each other "Mom" and "Dad" until very recently when talking to my sister or me. Now, it's "your mom" and "your dad." They started doing it when we were really little because children take social cues from their parents, and my sister started calling my mom "Honey" when she was about 3. And, uh....I don't think you want that. But I am definitely weirded out by adults who call their parents "Daddy" or "Mommy." There's a podcast I listen to where the hosts address their father as "Daddy" pretty regularly, and it weirds me out every time (fortunately, I love literally everything else about it, so it's only a small annoyance). Anyway, both of my grandfathers died before I was born, so I can't comment on whether or not they referred to my grandmothers as "Mother" or anything like that. However, my sister does call me "Brother" because she married someone who has the same name as me (although he goes by the full name, and I have gone by a shortened version of it since I was 14 but I guess it's easier to call me by my relationship to her than by the name I prefer) I seem to have gotten off-track somewhere along the way, but anyway...ummmm...how about Angela Lansbury's wild-ass accent in this movie?

    Episode 186.5 - Minisode 186.5

I saw Amy tweet about this earlier, and I'm SUPER pumped about it. The Canon isn't in my regular rotation, but I do check it out when someone I like is on it (Paul's Ghostbuster ep was REALLY good, but I haven't listened to The Room ep yet). I'm really excited to hear Paul nerd out on movies he actually likes, though!

It's SUPER weird. I definitely spent the whole scene going, "Is he gonna fuck her grandma?"

Musical Mondays Week 37 Blue Hawaii

So, I am totally fascinated with the opening scene of this movie. It's, like, ridiculously bad. I tried to find just that scene on YouTube, but apparently, no one is as interested in it as I am. I have questions about EVERYTHING in it. For starters, she tries to run from the cop. The cop literally has to pull his bike in front of her to get her to stop. But then he comes to her car and is like, "I thought you were mad at me. I haven't had to chase you for a week." I know that it's a pretty lady and all and that this is has that weird, fucked-up 60s psuedo-innocence y'all have already talked about, but there's no way that cop isn't like, "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" Also, he says that he has let her off with a warning multiple times. Like, how many? THEN when he tells her "if you fly now, you'll pay later" (WHO EVEN TALKS LIKE THIS?!) she goes, "Please, no lectures" and then tells him Chad is coming home and she's on the airport. So homeboy gives her a fucking police escort! This cop is as bad at being a cop as the actor playing him was at acting (bad acting is normally not something I harp on, but man...this was real bad). I watched this scene, like, five times last night. It's totally bananas and makes no sense. And in the greater context of the movie, I don't get what its purpose is. Is it supposed to set up Maile as a woman who plays by her own rules? Is it supposed to show her dedication to Chad (who is making out with another woman two scenes later)? I really don't know what the point of the scene is. Also, this movie takes place in Honolulu. But fucking EVERYONE knows who Chad is like it's a town of 200 people. Even the fucking lady handing out leis at the airport is like, "OH SHIT CHAD'S BACK?!" It's so perplexing. And I honestly spent most of the rest of the movie trying to crack these mysteries. To no avail.
  12. Guys. I'm literally on the first scene where the cop pulls the lady over and losing my mind. I have a feeling I'm in for a real doozy of a movie.

Does your public library have ebooks? I pretty much only check out books on my Kindle these days so I don't have to look someone in the eye and face their judgment for my reading habits.

    Episode 186.5 - Minisode 186.5

Can I introduce you to a dear friend of mine - the public library? Also, fun coincidence: this movie is directed by Richard LaGravenese, who also adapted and directed the film version of The Last Five Years, which I watched the other night for the musical-related project that I've previously mentioned I've been working on. It's on Netflix, and I very highly recommend it. Remember when we changed all our usernames to dinosaur puns to try to confuse Paul and he didn't read any of them?
  15. I really thought this meant Bedknobs and Broomsticks. But I've never seen Blue Hawaii! I'm very excited to check it out!

Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om

It didn't bother me more than the usual problems with how guys get to be sex symbols until they're in their 50s while women pretty much get mother roles when they hit 30. Until they introduced the mom and tried to make it seem skeevy that she was into him. That's when I looked up their ages and was like, "Waaaaait a sec"

Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om

Oh, he looks GREAT. I looked through some pictures of him from last year, too. He's in his early 50s now. And while he definitely looks older, he does not look 50 at all. Dude still looks amazing. And I totally agree about Deepika. Sandy is such a great character, and Deepika really sells her comedic moments very well. She's a big part of why I liked the second half more than the first. I thought she was just wonderful.

Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om

Mike's old age makeup (or lack thereof) was so great. I guess...at least they put some gray in his eyebrows instead of JUST in his hair. But it's still hilarious. The disco sequence was amazing. When they tossed the water at his bare chest, I died laughing. It's so over the top and silly and wonderful. Yeaaaahhhh. When he first showed up as OK, he was totally like Also, I felt a little grossed out when I looked up everyone's ages. Deepika Padukone (who we haven't really talked about yet, but she's an HDTGM alum from xXx: Return of Xander Cage) was 21 at this point. SRK was literally double her age at 42. But where it really kicks in is that Bindu, who plays Dolly's mom in movie within the movie was 56. SRK is closer in age to her than he is to Deepika. And only one of those relationships is played as creepy.

Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om

That was the joke. Bollywood has a tendency to find something that people like and then make the same movie over and over and over again (I mean...they're not the only ones). I looked this up because I wondered about it, too. So, the actor they were impersonating is a real guy named Manoj Kumar. A lot of Bollywood stars have sort of "signature poses" that they do. Kumar's is to cover half his face with his hand: Kumar is a HUGE deal in India. The hand thing is so tied to him that it would be very obvious who they were parodying, even if they didn't say it was him in the movie. It would be like if someone just swaggered up and said, "Howdy, Pilgrim," everyone would recognize immediately as a John Wayne impersonation. Apparently, Kumar was REALLY pissed about this and tried to block the film's release because of it. ETA: Tom beat me to it while I was writing out my post

Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om

Definitely agree with you both. There were things I absolutely love about the first act, but it definitely picked up for me in the second act. One of the things I loved early on, though, was the thing that catered to my limited Bollywood knowledge. When Om goes to talk to the giant Shanti billboard, there's another billboard for the movie Sholay, which is the first "curry western." They're more officially known as the Dacoit Western (apparently, "dacoit" is Hindi for "bandit"). My buddy's girlfriend actually found it at our local library, so we watched it a couple months ago, and it's....something else (in a great way). Sholay was hugely popular and Bollywood produced quite a few Dacoit Westerns in the 70s. So that's what Om and Pappu are extras in when Om saves Shanti from the fire on set. Anyway, that's also what leads into him staging his own fake Dacoit Western to impress Shanti. And this is one of my favorite scenes and costumes in the movie: I had that problem a lot during the songs. The musical numbers were so engaging that they would end, and I would be like, "Wait...what were they just singing about for the last 10 minutes?" I ended up watching most of them multiple times.

Musical Monday Week 36 Om Shanti Om

I'm going to pace myself because I have a TON to say about this movie. First off, I didn't realize when I picked it that it was, like, the most meta Bollywood movie possible. Every other line is a joke or reference to Bollywood things, and I didn't get half of them. That said, I don't think it's totally necessary. It helps to know the super heightened world of Indian cinema so that you can understand they playing with the melodrama for fun, but I think even watching the movie at its face value is a blast. Also, it's the first Bollywood masala movie I've seen. I've only seen Tamil masala movies (they're made in South India and often referred Kollywood movies), and they're AMAZING. My favorite is called Baasha, which is one of the craziest, most over-the-top movies I've ever seen. I was expecting something more in that vein, but I was super pleasantly surprised by how much I really fell in love with this movie right off the bat. That was a fun number, and I'm pretty sure they just threw it in there so SRK could dick around with his friends. It was definitely used as a crowd-pleaser, and I'm sure Indian audiences went nuts for it when they saw a lot of their favorite stars up there (the only person I knew was Priyanka Chopra). But, like, even not knowing who any of the people are, I had fun watching the number. I love big dance productions, and I loved all the ones in this movie. I'll have to post separately about my favorite one because I have so much to say about it, but I really loved Deewangi Deewangi. I also really liked the end credits number, and I think all movies should have to end with a Soul Train-style dance down the red carpet for the cast and crew.
