@itsrobobo They did Cannibal Holocaust on this podcast. Episode 48: http://www.earwolf.com/episode/48-cannibal-holocaust-w-sam-zimmerman/

I dig.
-
If you think that's actual reality, then I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
-
Even though I haven't seen this for about fifteen years, I feel like I HAVE to vote 'yes' for all the reasons outlined in the episode. It scared the hell out of me when I saw it in the theater, and I felt freaked out for weeks afterward. The townie interview toward the beginning (the woman and her baby), seems SO real. The baby getting scared and the woman saying "It's just a story, honey." And ends the interview by smiling and saying "WE don't go out there, so..." MAN, that stuff was effective.

He 100% kills Dr. Hill by cutting his head off with a shovel. Why is everyone forgetting that?
-
That is 100% a codpiece. Also I never really got Cindy Crawford, and Jennifer Connelly is maybe my #1 crush of all time.

This is the hardest 'no' I've ever given (a film), but it's a no for me. I'm probably in the camp who holds this movie as an important part of my childhood. I didn't watch it again and again like Neverending Story, but I saw it enough times that it was one of the films that informed my sense of wonder and magic about life and the world. I've also been a massive Bowie fan for most of my life, and was pretty destroyed when he died. Now I didn't go back and re-watch it this week, but I own the DVD and I think I've seen it recently enough as an adult to have a reasonably objective opinion about it; and I agree with most of what you guys said. Going back to it as an adult, I was struck my how it dragged. It just feels a lot longer than it actually is. Devin mentioned the Dark Crystal (a film I didn't see until I was an adult) and how it is similarly boring, but I think in that case the pace works for the movie well enough because of the general otherworldliness of the entire movie and the pseudo-spiritual content. It takes on an almost mystical quality. With Labyrinth, it's essentially more of a kids' movie but one that gets bogged down by poor pacing. I still love it and will no doubt watch it (probably stoned) many more times, but it's not a great film. Edit: Jennifer Connelly was in Argento's Phenomena right before this one. Also not a great film, but one of my favorites all the same.

I haven't seen this, and am unlikely to track it down before voting is closed. I just wanted to go on record as saying I didn't like Shop Girl.
-
As stated in the Hard Day's Night thread, I'm a George guy.
-
So, embarrassed to admit that I'm a Beatlemaniac who hasn't seen this or any Beatles movie. So again I can't vote. A couple of things though. One, I'm a George guy. I also like The Monkees. Saw Mickey Dolenz a few years ago on tour with The Turtles and he was great. So were the Turtles.

Well, since there's no Hard Day's Night thread yet, I'll make another post I've been thinking about. I've been catching up on episodes I missed when my iPod went a crazy, and listening to the Election episode I was struck by something. One of the hosts commented about how Reese Witherspoon said that Hillary Clinton told her (follow that?) that she gets compared to Tracy Flick, and it's a shame that we only have one cinematic template for a woman in politics to compare to real-life women in politics. Personally when I think of 'women in politics' in terms of cinema/pop culture, my mind goes to Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation. I love that show and I think Amy Poehler is brilliant. I know it's TV and not movies, but... Anyone else? What characters do you think of? I also immediately flash on The Contender, about a woman's battle to be brought in as a vice president. It's been too long since I've seen it to accurately judge how good that movie was, but I loved it when I saw it [back when it was a new release on VHS].
-
Haven't seen that. I'll check it out.
-
and btw, I laughed OUT LOUD (at work) when Amy was describing Clyde Bruckman's suicide and Devin said "Baller move."
-
This is one I saw as a child (like 7-8 years old) and liked. I saw it again in my early twenties and still liked. I haven't seen it since (I'm 35 now), but think it deserves to be in the Canon if nothing else but for historical significance. RE: X-Files; YES!!! That IS the best episode they ever did! Or at least my favorite. So stoked to hear Devin throw some love at one of my favorite episodes of television period.
-
Again, I can't vote because I haven't seen this movie. I never wanted to see it, even the slightest bit. But now after hearing this episode, I really want to see it. So thanks.
-
I can't vote because I haven't seen There Will Be Blood, but I'm jazzed you both read the comments. Love you guys, love the show. One thing re: Dirk's mother, I think that's actually a very common dynamic that occurs in real life where a mother will hate her son's girlfriends and there definitely is an edge of jealousy to it over being 'replaced' in a way. From what I have observed, it seems to be the eldest son [especially if he is the eldest child] that gets the brunt of it. Perhaps because he was the first one to come along and completely realign her life's priorities, and in essence she gives everything in her life away for this new male creature. And then some dirty whore who isn't good enough for her little boy, and doesn't realize how incredible he is [even if he isn't] is just going to come riding in and steal him away from her? Fuck that!
-
I never thought much about whether or not West killed Dan's cat, but he 100% kills Dr. Hill by cutting his head off with a shovel.
-
One more thing: According to the DVD commentary, the 'jawless dude,' with the bandage around his head is James Cameron's dad.
-
It also appears that Devin has a lot of pet peeves. Maybe I shouldn't have taken some of his previous comments so personally, because he more or less hates EVERYthing.
-
OH YES! This has been one if my favorite movies for about twenty years. I even had a VHS dub of it as a teenager that I made my own cool cover for and everything. Good work, Devin! I might actually be too close to this movie to see it academically for its benefits and its faults. But I also don't really care, and have voted 'yes.'

Two early, silent, surrealist/experimental films.
-
favorite horror movie sequels that you know are not good
JackChristensen replied to ZZZ's topic in The Canon
Fans of the Friday the 13th franchise seems to hate both part 5 and ...Goes to Hell because in both movies it is somehow "not really Jason" in one way or another, but I think those are my two favorites of the series. I also really liked the reboot, which a lot of horror fans their noses up at. Same with the Chainsaw Massacre reboot. I really liked it. -
How long has it been since you've seen it? I almost guarantee it's better than you remember. I'm a thirty-five year old man, and this is one of my absolute favorite movies.
-
Prancer belongs in the Canon
JackChristensen replied to JackChristensen's topic in Movie Suggestions
I may be too close to this movie emotionally to accurately judge its quality. -
I'm already voting yes. It's been one of my favorite movies for like twenty years.
