Episode 154 - Highlander II: The Quickening LIVE!
ChunkStyle replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I can't remember if they gave the years in the first Highlander movie when the action was set back in Scotland but Ramirez might have actually died before Shakespeare was writing. Knowing that I think we can all agree this movie actually makes a lot of sense. Actually this movie has me thinking we need a new term for something beyond "plot hole" in the case where the script is about 85% hole and 15% coherent plot. -

I had subtitles turned on while watching the Amazon (Renegade Version) and if I remember correctly the subtitles put in that line. -

I think by the strict definition yes you did watch the wrong version because there is no right version of this movie. But I do think you watched the version that Paul recommended. -

My friends and I were big fans of Highlander back in the day. And all I can remember about seeing Highlander II 25 years ago is hating it because of how it completely destroyed the cool premise of the first movie. It wasn't until this re-watch that I found out how bad this movie actually is. I know Highlander has a tiny fraction of the pop culture following of Star Wars but what Highlander 2 did to the Immortals was way worse than what Lucas and midicholrians did to the Jedi. Nerdy angst out of the way here are my Fun Notes for the movie. In the battle scene at the start of the movie (in the past and/or Zeist) it makes no sense that so many of the guys are using swords. Bullets work just fine there. Obviously they were because this is a "sword movie" but still I give low marks to generals Connery and Lambert. Going by the Renegade Version it seems like all those guys in the past can just choose to leave it at any time. And the past seems extremely wack. They appear to live or at least mostly hang out in caves. Why don't they just all hop to sometime better? The fact the the Porcupine Bros and Michael Ironsides call Lambert Highlander doesn't add up. Shouldn't they have called him his name from their time? I guess they can see that he gets called Highlander while watching their Future TV but if someone I used to know said "They call me Highlander now" I don't think I'd go along with it. Especially someone I already didn't like. When Connery sees Virginia Madsen in Lambert's apartment he makes a comment like "Some things have definitely improved." That was kind of a shitty thing to say Connery knew Lambert's first wife in the original movie. Connery tells Lambert (vaguely) how to destroy the shield. Connery just got there and knows nothing about it. Lambert built it. -
Based on the breakdown given on the nuts website I found the digital video version on Amazon is the Renegade version.

I think history is going to judge Blake Plissken very harshly. He was supposed to be Snake but he is making a quip on a line that is said to Snake not something that Snake ever says. If I ran Largo I'd ban him for life. Probably a good thing I am not a club owner.

I can't tell. On Amazon it seems like they only have Highlander 2 Renegade Version branding. I don't see any that say Highlander 2 Director's Cut. Here is a way too detailed page breaking down the different versions of the film. Without having actually read it I think it is safe to warn there are spoilers here. http://www.figmentfly.com/published/highlander2article.html

Heads up that on Twitter a while back Paul said watch the Renegade Version of Highlander 2. https://twitter.com/paulscheer/status/807373015105159168 I am half hoping that for the show half the panel watched the theatrical and half watched renegade version because I think they are pretty different.

Episode 153 - Escape from L.A.: LIVE!
ChunkStyle replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I am really hoping that Blake Harris's interview for this movie is with someone on the studio side because I am really curious what the thinking was behind the budget for this movie. If it is true they initially planned for $75M that seems beyond crazy to me. As you mention Carpenter hadn't been lighting it up at the box office. And Russell was coming off Stargate? Which I guess was a success but not a huge one. So why are they saying they'll give $75M to make a sequel to Escape from NY which had a lifetime gross of about $45M in 1996 dollars. -

If Carpenter really did plan to eventually make a sequel called Escape from Mars I'd say that doesn't mesh with his dystopian view of the future established in these movies. This movie ends with all of the electronics on Earth being destroyed and probably years of chaos that result from that. But within Snake's lifetime (and presumably while he is still fighting age) he is escaping from a colony on Mars? Instead of dystopian that is a wildly optimistic view of what the human race could achieve. -
Episode 152 - The 2nd Annual Howdies Pt. 2

I was so happy to hear the Cillian Murphy story brought back. That story is insane and I love it so much. -
It is crazy that this movie is supposed to cover an entire school year. The only thing that conveys the passage of time is that Michael has practiced his motorcycle tricks to the point that he can levitate. And that isn't something you learn in just a couple of weeks.

Easily my favorite part of the movie was when Johnny said they were going to win "100 long-playing albumens". It was so stupid that I found it legitimately funny. But then the T-Birds kept saying albumens through the movie and it lost its charm. They should have left it as one perfect moment.

I definitely don't have anything that will change June's mind about this movie. But here are some dumb little things that stuck out to me. The lead into the bowling song is everyone in the bowling alley yelling "shoot the ball!". Has that ever been said while bowling before or since? It already feels a little weird that the T-Birds are also on the football team. But based on the fact that they are pushing Sid Caesar around on the tackling sled they are either offensive or defensive linemen. I don't think Rydell won a single game that year. When Michael is playing the piano for the talent show rehearsals it is the laziest fake playing I have ever seen in a movie. He literally just keeps his hands above the same keys the entire time and lifts his hands up and down. And speaking of him being the piano player. Was it not an issue that he disappeared right before the talent show? When Stephanie goes into her fugue state during the talent show she imagines she is singing a duet with the Mystery Rider. When she is done the crowd goes wild. But what were they seeing exactly? Presumably just her half of the song.

Ben was a great guest. And I'll throw in a +1 for Sheer Mag fandom. Their stuff is on bandcamp free to check out. https://sheermag.bandcamp.com/

Episode 149 - The Lawnmower Man: LIVE! (w/ Neil Casey, Emily Heller)
ChunkStyle replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Great episode. But I am afraid I have a slight bone to pick with Researcher Nate. Surely somewhere there must exist an article or interview with the story that the monkey escape scene happened to be filmed on National Take Your Kid to Work Day. And that scene was actually shot by the 2nd unit director's 9 year old. That is the only rational explanation, right? -
Episode 148 - Vampire's Kiss: LIVE!
ChunkStyle replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
I think this movie, based purely on Cage's insane performance, could be made into a fun DVD party game (the last of which was probably produced 5 years ago). The way it would work is that it would first show you the text of Cage's lines for an upcoming scene. Everyone could take turns acting out how they think Cage performed that scene. Then hit play and find out how it really went down. -

The rabies theory actually makes total sense because I remember hearing a theory that the initial vampire myth may have come from the symptoms of people infected with rabies. But what is odd is when I was looking it up it appears that theory was put forth in 1998. 10 years after Vampire's Kiss came out. So did they know what they were doing when they made this movie? Or did they accidentally stumble onto something plausible? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/178623.stm -

Hearing June come on stage brought maybe my first real smile since Tuesday night. They brought up the impatient hot dog vendor but I thought even better than him was the cab driver. Near the beginning of the movie they hail the cab and then wave him off. He pulls his car over for about 5 seconds but he is so enraged he yells at them "God damn you! Fuck your mind! Cocksuckers!" And it is just occurring to me that maybe what he was actually doing was laying a curse on Nic Cage when he said fuck your mind and that led to his descent into madness. -
I'd say Gamer has just one unforgivable sin. It made me feel bad for a character named Rick Rape. In the process of rescuing his wife from Society Gerard Butler unnecessarily kills Rick Rape. But what he is actually doing is killing the avatar not the bad person controlling him. And whoever the avatar was might have been in Society to raise money for orphans with 3rd degree burns or some other sad story on par with the Butler family.

The CaseFiles of Columbo Ep 1: Paul F. Tompkins
ChunkStyle replied to JulyDiaz's topic in Earwolf Presents
I am afraid PFT may have set the bar way too high with his answer for the Columbo in real life question. -
Not that I wanted to spend any more time with these characters but I will say that I didn't agree with Curtis when he went off on the four friends as all being giant assholes. I think we were supposed to feel that these were good people that had problems fitting in comfortably in society because of their powers.

Can someone who knows what they are doing in the forum setup a poll with this question? "Was it a choice to show Duddits as the actual alien and not a host + hitchhiker? Or was it just a filming mistake?" A.) choice B.) mistake I am voting B.

I think a septic tank may have saved the human race there.
