EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

Not to bring the party down but I got another Canadian case of this, where twins boys were born and one had a botched circumcision so the parents, on medical advice, raised him as a girl. He never identified as female and transitioned back to male at 15. It's really tragic. http://en.wikipedia....ki/David_Reimer

EPISODE 384 — Numbers Cannot Lie

I'm getting very distracted hearing Jason talk about a June and not the real June.

EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

Two things about the set up of the gym/spa: When they take the cops for a tour of the place, the panning shot reveals that the gym has no ceiling. They couldn't be bothered to build a ceiling or properly frame the shot. Can we please talk about how in his office he has cattle skulls on the walls, instead of vests? He just loves that western motif guys.

EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

Michael is legitimately a sociopath I think. He says Catherine was upset without justification. If you're ever in a scenario where you have to defend yourself and you use without justification, then you're done. Pack it up because you're wrong. Also, if we're to believe David, Catherine never wanted the baby in the first place. So Catherine's being upset about being in a wheelchair due to a intrapartum complications can be completely justified. She didn't want the baby in the first place, just Michael. She may see everything Michael has done in spite of their love. Maybe she didn't want the baby because she believed she was enough for him? Then after she became disabled, she sees Michael going to the gym all the time. David more than likely told her the goings-on at the gym and all of Michael's affairs. She was COMPLETELY justified in being depressed and potentially angry. Angry enough to commit paranormal murder? Definitely. That's also why I made the cop the dinosaur in my Theodore Rex comparison.

EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

I've never seen it, but is "Twins" with Arnold and Danny Devito a good-bad movie? They could go two for two with that combo after Junior. Otherwise, maybe the movie "Stuck on You" with Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear playing conjoined twins?

June's line "It's called a miscarriage" absolutely destroyed me.

EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

My biggest critique follows up on what Paul says about there being no agreement on the level of injury sustained by Laura and her Final Destination-esque murder attempt. The cop says she's like an alkaseltzer and we see her wrapped in gauze blankets, so presumably she would need skin grafts which doesn't happen. During the party, she walks in wearing sunglasses instead of bandages on her eyes. At one point, she says that she's "glad to see the world again" then within 20 minutes, Catherine is taking her away and Laura says "who are you/where are you taking me?" So my question, can she actually see or is she that slow? Shouldn't her eyes be scarred with chemical vapour burns? Then when Michael removes Laura from the tanning bed, she's golden not beet red. Someone who has had chemical-burned skin in the last 2 days should look like Freddy Kruger at this point. There also should be a white line across her face from the gag but her whole face is bronze. Finally, we get to see the worst CPR ever on film. Presumably Laura passes out from the heat of the tanning bed. Why does she need CPR? Did the scenario cause so much stress on her body, which is one of the most in-shape bodies around, that her heart and lungs stopped? Is it like getting trapped in a hot car?

EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

Fun fact: this movie does not have a Wikipedia page in English but has French page for the Quebecois dub. It's not extensive but it's there.

EPISODE 122 - Death Spa: LIVE!

This might be the ultimate HDTGM movie. Not only do they reference The Room, Birdemic, Daredevil and Runaway, this movie has 8 other callbacks. 1. Throwing a football during regular conversation-The Room 2. Really close face to face enemy talking (Michael and David, Michael and the lawyer) -Roadhouse 3. Black female cop paired with a dinosaur- Theodore Rex 4. Burning people- The Wicker Man 5. Pirate rambling to Catherine in the computer room- Rollerblading girl in Crocodile Dundee 6. Dead wife having an influence on new girlfriend- Safe Haven 7. Main character doesn't actually engage in a threeway/group sex- Staying Alive, Perfect 8. Halloween movie with a gender bent twist at the end- Sleepaway Camp Edit: Also referenced Colour of Night, when thinking Catherine became David

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

I was legit going to ask if anyone was dressing up for Halloween this year and this question is so much better! I'm an HDTGM originalist. ANY costumes from Burlesque. I love wigs, glitter, those fuck-me pumps Christina gets from McSteamy and I'm a decent dancer after a few drinks. Edit: I re-watched this yesterday actually and will fight anyone that tells me that this is not an amazing piece of cinema.

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

Thanks again! I appreciate the understanding. It is so ubiquitous to hate Nickelback and I'll be the first to admit that I trashed Nickelback for the sake of being Nickelback. Chad Kroeger was interviewed once and basically said he found the formula to make successful radio hits and that if the critics wanted, they could throw eggs at his mansion. Photograph is another very "earnest" song of theirs that I can't stand. Animals is probably my favourite of theirs, I think high school nostalgia goggles are involved with that though. My Latest 5: 1. Lovers in a Dangerous Time- Barenaked Ladies 2. Let's Spend the Night Together- Rolling Stones 3. Tornado- Little Big Town 4. Hot and Fun- N.E.R.D. feat Nelly Furtado 5. Work Out- J Cole

I feel you. My dad is originally from PEI and mom's from Manitoba. I've lived in MB, SK and Nunavut too. Canadians are a transient people.

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

As a white person growing up in rural Prairie Canada, I will admit to enjoying Nickelback. My caveat is that I only enjoy their upbeat party music. Their really earnest stuff, like If Anyone Cared, can burn in a dumpster fire.

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

For me, it's Bryan Adams. My mom doesn't like his voice and I inherited that distaste just because. As it turned out, I loved a bunch of his songs but didn't know they were by him because she'd always changed the radio station. "When You're Gone" with Mel C is one of my favourite duets. Controversially though, Summer of '69 is one of my most hated songs. It's over played and I don't think I'm that song's demographic.

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

I have not seen the original trilogy, A New Hope, Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back. My first Star Wars movie was actually Episode III:Revenge of the Sith. BNL, the hell bro? Why would you be disinclined to admit that? Their Gordon album is literally in the CD player of my car and it's my favourite album. My examples are objectively bad but I do love them for what they are: radio filler and sexy dance jams Artist: The Pussycat Dolls and Ashlee Simpson (but not Pieces of Me or Shadow) Song: Nothing in the World by Paris Hilton

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

Thanks! It's basically a combination of cultural osmosis, Robot Chicken and having debates with my old room-mates about the trilogies. They explained a fair bit of background (re the Clone Wars show) and I've just made my own less informed opinions off of that. They almost had me watch them but in a different order because if I remember correctly, if you view Anakin as a place holder for Luke, there's a much better character arc. It never came to fruition though Unfortunately, I have really bad "80s Vision" especially when it comes to movies with special effects. I can usually power through it for the movies on the podcast though. Since I know the story and the major plot points, all I'd be doing is going back to watch the effects sequences and that's not worth it for me.

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

My opinion might not count for much as I've never watched Episodes IV, V, or VI but here's as I understand it: Anakin joined when he was too old after having a connection with his mother (learning impulsive emotion over measured detachment and diplomacy) and that was further exacerbated by his infatuation with Padme. I've always assumed he displaced his feelings for his mother on to Padme, as the one female constant in his life. Luke on the other hand, while still too old by old Jedi standards, grew up relatively well-adjusted and more importantly, alone. He had Obi Wan after his uncle and aunt were killed, keeping him on an even keel (? Again not sure about this). Then he had Yoda to finish out his crash course in Force Training imparting further wisdom. By the time VI is over, I'd wager Luke is old enough to see Vader's trajectory and avoid it like the dickens. Luke still has his sister, Han and a (presumably) solid support network to get through any lingering anger over Vader's death.

    EPISODE 121.5 - Minisode 121.5

About Paul's point about a murder being on that tape, there is an infamous case in Canada about that very thing. Paul Bernardo was implicated/thought to be involved with around 30 horrific sexual assaults, a few later known as the Scarborough Rapes. His girlfriend, Karla Homolka was also charged in relation to 4 of these crimes, with one of the victims being Homolka's sister. Bernardo made tapes of himself and Homolka raping and assaulting 4 different girls, later murdering them (again one being Homolka's teenage sister). Crown prosecutors cut a deal with Homolka and she'd testify against Bernardo, greatly reducing her sentence, with her alleging that she wasn't an active party to the offences. Bernardo told his lawyer to go to his house and retrieve these tapes (and not to view them), after the police had already searched it. The lawyer held onto the tapes for over a year eventually withdrawing from the case and turning them over to Bernardo's next lawyer. The tapes showed that Homolka was a rather active participant in the crimes. The original lawyer stated he planned to turn over the tapes eventually to use in Bernardo's defense. It's a huge case in law school and it is referenced in many classes like Criminal Procedure, Evidence and Legal Ethics/Professional Responsibility.
