  1. Great episode! My only gripe is that we didn't get any "June theories". I was hoping Deanna would take up the family torch but it was not meant to be...

When Hats called that guy "funky", I winced. To me, funky is akin to moist or juicy. The word just makes me cringe.

And not to bring up the last minisode issue again but...

FYI Robin lively (who plays Louise) was only 17 when this movie was released, while Dan Gauthier (who plays Brad) was 26...this makes the final make out scene even more disturbing.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Robyn said the following about the dance routines...

“I took all the dancing too seriously at the time. I was a little more self-conscious back then. And when I had to do the ‘most popular girl’ spin inside the bedroom, I had twisted my ankle. I’m going to blame most of my bad dancing on the ankle.”

Robyn Lively’s younger sister, Blake, was a huge Teen Witch fan. So at Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold’s wedding, Robyn and her brother re-enacted the last dance scene.

Robyn is on record saying, "I got a blue dress, a blue tutu, and the music comes on. I had the necklace remade. I took it off and threw it to her. We did the whole dance!”

The first is BertramCooper's, the second is from the article I posted, and the third is literally what I said. Am I being really sensitive to this stuff now? Because I'd like to know what the line is between mini-episode conversations and regular episodes in terms of repeating information.

  2. Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that I regretted that post about as soon as I hit "post". It was catty and unnecessary, not at all along the lines of the maxi-pad malfeasance, the Gus from Breaking Bad botheration or lately the Jim Steinem situation.

In the words of my people, BertramCooper...

  3. Sorry to flood the board again, but I just had to post a GIF of the cholo so we can see his sweet moves in action:

All I could think of after seeing this is Rebecca Black's Friday, sitting in the back seat

Lord I hope the episode is dropping tomorrow because I have so many things I want to talk about.

  4. Will HDTGM continue forever? Unfortunately, no...but I wouldn't despair just yet. They're just busy people, and as much as I love HDTGM, I accept that it may not always be their first priority--if ever. Just be happy and enjoy it for as long as it lasts--which will hopefully be a very, very long time.

Personally, I think the best is yet to come!

All I need is enough eps to make the 2nd "Annual" Howdie Awards. I feel like I've come up with a couple interesting categories since the last one. I also need a supercut of every time Jason, the guest or the audience references Jacob's Ladder.

I'm a rational adult (at least, by the legal standard) but I watched Interstellar the other night and the thought of HDTGM ending brings me to this...

  5. Sorry for the hiatus, this will be long. I apologize for nothing.

For comparisons sake, I went ahead and looked up what the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1994.

    The Top 10 were:

    1) Ace of Base--"The Sign"

    2) All-4-One--"I Swear"

    3) Boys II Men--"I'll Make Love to You"

    4) Celine Dion--"The Power of Love" (I'm assuming this is not her cover of Huey Lewis and the News)

    5) Mariah Carey--"Hero"

    6) Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories--"Stay (I Miss You)

    7) Toni Braxton--"Breathe Again"

    8) Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Sting--"All for Love"

    9) Ace of Base--"All That She Wants"

    10) Ace of Base--"Don't Turn Around"

Ace of Base was literally my childhood. I grew up to my mom blasting that CD every cleaning day, sometimes interspersed with ABBA Gold. It is untouchable to hate.

Are we finding out that Cameron H has terrible judgement on 90s music?

Next you're gonna tell me you hate Torn

Another reason why tayloranne is my girl

...I really don't think the live episodes are very good tho....it'd so much more magical in studio, but I realize they get the money doing it live. Been to two live shows, loved the experience. But not fun to listen to....been months since a good episode was released....

  6. I saw the movie, and it felt to me that there was about 15 minutes of story stretched out into 2 hours. It was a technically well-made film of course, but I was totally bored throughout. I don't specifically remember if the songs added a lot to the story, but my problem with a lot of the recent film musicals I've seen is that they do not. Things happen, and there's a 10 minute number about the thing that just happened. Wash, rinse, repeat. Seems to happen a lot in ones where they're reappropriating classic songs and just riding that gimmick into the ground.

I have a problem with this assessment, mainly because I feel you don't substantively give reasons for your analysis. I follow the Judge John Hodgman rule that "People like what they like and don't like what they don't like" but I think you're missing the point of this musical.

In Roxy Hart, we see Roxy's psychological state and her delusional relationship with fame. In Cell Block Tango, we learned about Catherine Zeta-Jones' case, her marriage and her relationship with her sister. In Richard's Gere tap dance courtroom scene, we see how hard he working that "razzle dazzle" (another solid song).

Also, Chicago doesn't appropriate any classic songs from the era, they are all originals.

I'm curious as to what musicals you're referring to that appropriate classic songs because the only ones I'm thinking of are Rock of Ages and Pennies from Heaven. I think you're conflating problems you have with modern musicals, which again I'm not sure to what you're referring, with Chicago.

  7. A couple things I noticed while re-listening today:

First, Paul said they had to work around child labor laws because of Diane Lane's age. But she was 18. Would child labor laws still count since she's legally an adult?

Perhaps she turned 18 near the end of shooting, therefore they had to work around child labour standards until her birthday? It could also be a thing that if she was 17 when she started, her contract wouldn't grandfather in the fact of her being age of majority in the middle of shooting.

Also, presumably there were some minors in the crowd during the concert scenes so they would all have to be done during sanctioned hours.

This is just off the cuff, I haven't researched California child labour regulations

  8. Basically this series are remakes of other movies but with cars. The Fast and the Furious was Point Break with cars. Fast Five was Ocean's Eleven with cars.

The Fast and the Furious (#1) is a good movie. You don't need to watch 2 Fast 2 Furious to keep up with the overarching plot. That's where we meet Tyrese (who is a childhood friend of Brian O'Conner) and Ludacris (a custom shop mechanic), that's it. Tokyo Drift is also good, there was the retcon of it though with 4 and 5.

I'd recommend watching The Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious, Fast Five, Fast and Furious 6, Furious 7. But if you want to do it in chronological order rather than release order then its:

    The Fast and the Furious

    Fast and Furious

    Fast 5

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

The Fast and the Furious 6

    Furious 7

  9. Correction:

It's well known that Rick Moranis is a bit of a ass hole here in Canada, so much so that it's become a derogative term. used in a sentenced like " don't go all Moranis on me now. " you would say to a wife or a guy that got on your nerves.

much used like this popular Canadian saying " hey great one, why don't you take the kids to a movie!"

or "hey great one, why don't you take the trash out!" don't get all Moranis! On me about it, just do it.

    and so now you know.

I'm going to take Dolores Umbridge with this statement. Perhaps it is a generational thing but I have literally never heard of this. I asked a couple of older people over the past week about this and they looked at me like I was insane (because of the sentiment, not because of the actual question about Rick Moranis). Same with The Great One, I have never heard this and I grew up as a rink rat, in arenas every weekend.

It feels very aggressive and doesn't make much sense to me. I understand we were all pissed when 99 went to LA but not enough to completely turn him into "that guy". This seems like very localized vernacular.

But I agree, nobody wants a reverse Outsiders story. The thought of Johnny and Dallas raising from the grave just so they can see a movie at the drive-in would be downright ghoulish.

This made my day. Stay gold, Cameron H.

  10. Speaking of which, I saw Chris Evans up close both then and also when he was in full Cap mode, and he is quite the handsome gentleman. What do the ladies generally think of him?

My Avengers Attractiveness List. I apologize if this has been done on the forums before.

    1. Chris Evans (I'm not usually attracted to blondes but he's the exception to the rule)

    2. Mark Ruffalo

    3. Jeremy Renner

    4. ScarJo (nothing but envy here)

    5. Robert Downey Jr.

    6. Chris Hemsworth (He follows my non-blonde rule)

Chris Evans is just wonderful. He pulls off being blonde and he can grow a great beard. I appreciate a solid beard. I think growing up in the Great White North has pre-dispositioned me to finding a beard attractive.

Speaking of the Great White North and beards...

  11. Are we saying people we like that others don't or people we don't find attractive that others do? Cause I may have answers for both! As far as people who are considered widely attractive that I just don't really understand (it only seems fair to give two answers) it's Channing Tatum and Eva Mendes. I just wouldn't put either on my list at all. And when it comes to someone I find crazy attractive that people have told me they don't get is Jeremy Renner, which I actually find pretty crazy, but I think it's clear that the girls watching Avengers aren't supposed to be drawn to Hawkeye like I am.

For my movie this is gonna show my age but I have to go with Josie and the Pussycats. Someone made a thread for it in the recommendations forum and Shannon and I argued that it was perfect and doesn't meet the criteria but I have a feeling if I showed it to someone now who had never seen it before then they wouldn't get the perfection of the satire. Plus, in my opinion, that music still holds the fuck up cause it still plays on my itunes shuffle.

    giphy.gif

I agree with everything in this post. I dig Tatum's dancing but not his face. He has charisma in my opinion, just not a look to go with it. I do like Eva Mendes though. I do rank Jeremy Renner higher on my Avengers sex list than Chris Hemsworth.

Josie and the Pussycats was a formative movie for me. I watched it at a sleepover after Jamie Sale and David Pelletier were robbed at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. I was distraught and this movie made it all better. It also took me until I was about 19 for the double entendre of "Back Door Lover" to fully sink in.

I honestly can't think of an actor that I don't find attractive (that others generally consider so). I don't find Parker Posey attractive, speaking of Josie.

I'm in love with James Spader but I think he's generally considered to have sex appeal. My other crush would be Stephen Colbert. I know he's considered funny-sexy but to me, he's my dreamboat.

  12. EllenM question for you, do you have Netflix canada? can you tell me if The Apple 1980 is listed for streaming there?

    No, it's not.

Also, does Marvel have an Alpha Flight series on Netflix Canada that us U.S. viewers are missing out on?

    No, we do not.

With streaming that bad in Canada, does it still have video stores?

I don't think streaming is bad up here but I might be less picky than others. I'm a devourer of television and watching it the next day on the network website works for me. My hometown of 2500 people still sells DVDs at the Co-Op and the other convenience store but no strictly video store.

My biggest problem are all the geo-blocked clips on YouTube by NBC. This next gif perfectly illustrates my ire over this topic.

    giphy.gif

I see a clip I want, I click it, it takes a half second to load then crushes my heart because it is unavailable from my location.
