Oh man, you guys digressed into some Indiana Jones territory there for a second, and were confused about Temple of Doom as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Well, you got to understand the character arch Indiana is going through throughout the series. At the beginning of Doom, he’s still into archaeology for “fortune and glory.’ Throughout Doom however, he realizes that archaeology can have a deeper purpose and decides to save the village and get back their river rocks.
This “fortune and glory” mentality is mostly absent by Raiders, and is totally at odds with the “that belongs in a museum” Indiana we see in Last Crusade. So, the story arch of Indiana becoming a better person makes more sense with the stories being in this order.
As an aside, the Indian government thought the “Thuggee Cult” stuff in Doom was so offensive, they refused to let them film in India. So, they moved production to Sri Lanka, and all the “Indian” characters are speaking Sinhalese, a language not found in India.
