  1. Was thinking of genres that have yet to be represented in the Canon, and I thought this could make for an interesting discussion. Though musicals have been talked about, none of the films discussed yet have purely had music as the subject. Stop Making Sense is probably my favorite straight up concert film so that's why I put it as the header. Also, Pauline Kael called it "close to perfection" and I know our hosts love her so. Other choices: Gimme Shelter - Okay, this is not exactly a concert film and really maybe this could've been its own suggestion. Cultural importance off the hooks.... and yeah maybe this one should be in the header. Live! Tonight! Sold Out!- honestly I have no idea if this is highly regarded, but as a Nirvana dork growing up this one is very dear to me The Last Waltz - or, Martin Scorsese and the Canadian Confederates
  2. 1) To put it simply, it is insanity that Paul Thomas Anderson has not been put into the canon yet. I could say the same for Terrence Malick, but I can save that suggestion for later (Tree of Life Tree of Life). I know these are really basic Serious Film Person movies but really, we're nearly 70 films deep with no PTA. 2) Both of these films, as well as maybe 3 other PTA movies, are bonafide canon and there's little reason to believe they wouldn't be voted in if tackled on at a time. Thus it'd be kind of boring to tackle one or the other on its own. I think these films released exactly 10 years apart, have similarities and differences that could make for interesting discussion about Anderson's style and growth as a filmmaker, and why he's important (or sucks, if you're someone who thinks that.)

    Episode 70: BATMAN v SUPERMAN

Well, yeah. Though there's always the argument to be had for putting examples of mistakes in the Canon.

Favorite and least favorite movies in The Canon

few seem to be happy with Chi-Raq in the canon. i think they goofed not letting Tangerine happen.

    Suggestion: Psycho vs. Halloween

New Nightmare is obviously tops. I wish i liked Nightmare 2 more than i do, it is fucking insane that that was the DIRECT sequel. Its the kind of movie that would be expected to happen 7 movies into a series but nope

Suggest - Top Ten from years long gone.

Not a bad idea, but I think we'll already be given a chance to vote for The Fly whenever they do the next second chance episode.

    Episode 71: SLACKER

Slacker is so damn good. It's a movie so many student filmmakers clearly strive to make, or think is easy to make, but it's just not. It required thought and genuine affection for a place and people.

    Episode 70: BATMAN v SUPERMAN

I hope the next superhero episode can be the Spider-Man trilogy

Could also do the film youre most glad didnt make it - which for me is a hard tie between ROMEO + JULIET and PRETTY IN PINK

    Suggestion: Psycho vs. Halloween

Nightmare totally does though. Completely changed the game. Texas might lose to Psycho, but itd totally hold its own against Halloween imo. I think its gotten more and more respect among cinephiles as time has gone on, and the fact its a straight up slasher that preceded Halloween (like Black Christmas, also canon) could certainly give it an edge. Also, Carpenters real masterpiece is already in the canon

Episode 25 - Pretty in Pink

I watched this movie for the first time because of the Canon. I didn't expect the like it, but I didn't expect to HATE IT. Listening to the podcast afterwards was very therapeutic. Duckie is genuinely enraging

    Suggestion: Psycho vs. Halloween

This would be a total blowout. They're the same movie because Friday was an explicit ripoff

    Episode 70: BATMAN v SUPERMAN

I like the goofiness of Burton's BATMAN. The Joker 'commercial' scene is my favorite. It reminds me of some of the stuff found in the short-lived Joker comic series. And as I have felt every other time I've tried it..... SUPERMAN is a snoozer. Well directed, and I like how dream-like the beginning sequence is, but it doesn't hold for me. But the Canon, it appears to me, is about a balance of quality and importance.... and even then, I'm not so sure SUPERMAN takes it away. I think the Burton BATMAN, as HoldenMartinson said, is still bigger in our culture. And that's partially because there have been very, very popular & beloved Batman works since 1989 - the animated shows, the video games, and the Nolan movies. All of which may not happened without Burton. There is a forever-going debate over what the best depiction of Batman/Joker is - people even through their hats in for animated versions! Though I'll stick up for SUPERMAN RETURNS as decent, there just hasn't been as much to say about Superman since the Donner films. Superman just has not been the phenomenon of a franchise like Batman has been. And what but Burton's film is to thank for setting in motion Batman being such a huge fixture in the culture? While Superman is iconic - people just aren't as in to him. Also, going back to the animated shows - the Batman animated series for sure would not have happened without BATMAN 1989. And ever since, DC's animated shows are where they found their most consistent success outside comics. So, Burton's film was more important for DC, is a bigger fixture in the cultural consciousness, and it truly started turning the Batman franchise into the juggernaut that the Superman franchise is not. Oh, and I don't think Prince would've signed on for a SUPERMAN soundtrack. My vote is for BATMAN.

    Homework: Slacker (1991)

I wish this were a vs. with Dazed and Confused. They're both extremely strong YESes for me and that episode would tear me apart in a great way
  19. I don't think they're too different. They're both about the dark sides of 'success', in a way. An individual episode for each would just be another obvious 'yes' episode.

Homework: Batman (1989) vs. Superman (1978)

And it was so that the looming THE DARK KNIGHT episode of the Canon was fended off...... for now
