    Little Monsters (1989)

I remember liking this movie as a kid but I haven't seen it since 1989. For me it probably hit that perfect childhood dream of escaping to a secret underground fantasy world where weird creatures understand and accept me (like Labyrinth, Neverending Story, maybe even TMNT). I've never heard anyone call it a bad movie before; it might not be a good one, though. The makeup effects are pretty cool.

    The Evil Within (2017)

I will grant that Dicaprio's performance in that is very good, but if the film was made today I think it would (rightfully) get called out on that choice.

Episode 158 - Body Parts: LIVE!

Also this aspect ratio change was really unnecessary -- I thought something had gone wrong with the video when I looked away while cooking breakfast. I actually stopped the movie and restarted my "smart" tv because sometimes it does random glitches like this.

    The Evil Within (2017)

Normal actors playing mentally handicapped is insulting as hell, and I can't think of a single time it's been pulled off. There are actors with these handicaps -- use them. It's like Gary Oldman walking around on his knees in Tiptoes, just totally unnecessary and kinda offensive.

Episode 158 - Body Parts: LIVE!

That was my favorite part of the movie. They had a special computer just to show if his head was attached or not -- clearly the buzzsaw going through his neck wasn't a good enough indicator.

Episode 158 - Body Parts: LIVE!

I could listen to Claudia O'Doherty read the phone book*, she is an absolute joy. (*this reference doesn't make sense in 2017, does it?) Had to finish this:

    The Evil Within (2017)

This looks amazing/awful! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Is that guy in the trailer supposed to be developmentally disabled?

    The Last Dragon (1985)

Seriously entertaining movie! It'd be perfect for HDTGM. YouTube and Amazon both stream it for $2.99. You can buy a new DVD from Amazon for less than $4. William H Macy's greatest role:

See maybe it's because I haven't had breakfast, but this looks and sounds delicious. I've had a ramen pizza before in Portland that knocked my socks off, seriously amazing. I think when a culture has taken another culture's food and really made it their own, it transcends the original. You wouldn't feed it to someone looking for an authentic margherita style pizza, though. It's different. Cashews + cream cheese + jalapeños = weirdest best pizza I've ever had.

Skin care corner! My esthetician tells me that coconut oil is actually bad for your face; your pores are too fine for the oil to penetrate, so it actually sits on top and can end up clogging your skin. It appears to make your skin soft, but it's really just greasing up your face for a potential breakout. Instead, try using castor oil (hexane-free, it's super cheap). I swear it erases fine lines.

I shame-ate an entire box of gluten free Girl Scout toffee cookies last week. Thin Mints are the best though! Mint aids digestion, so the cookies are actually good for you. The more you eat, the healthier you get. I don't understand the coconut/Samoa hate though -- it's still a delicious cookie. Coconut is probably really healthy too, I've noticed they started adding it to fancy water.

    Nine Lives (2016)

Question: does Kevin Spacey's spirit/soul/whatever take over a preexisting cat? Or is he just sort of supernaturally taking the form of a cat?

    Antibirth (2016)

I watched this on demand because I love the two leads. It's intentionally weird and trippy so there's actually not much to say about it. Kinda interesting if you like Natasha Lyonne but I can't really recommend it. It's on the level of your average Troma film, both in terms of quality and content.

Seems like you've been in a slump lately with non-musical movie watching. Body Parts starts a little slow and weird but once the third act happens, it's like the brakes have gone out. Speaking of which... The car crash in this movie was fucking nuts! I definitely believed that a dude lost at least an arm in that. I mean it's a shame that these kinds of stunts aren't commonplace anymore, but also jeez thank god for CGI. For what it's worth, I liked Body Parts. It makes no sense in a fun way, once it's over. Brad Dourif is always a joy, Kim Delaney is gorgeous, and Jeff Fahey decks the hell out of a kid. This is a video I always used to see in the rental store when I was younger -- I remember the Saul Bass-esque cover -- so it was neat to finally see it.
  16. I can't imagine listening to anyone trying to make sense of Zardoz without having at least seen the movie -- it must be incredibly confusing! The movie is super bizarre, intentionally much more so than most on this podcast. It might be the straight up weirdest film HDTGM has done, come to think.

Get Out was amazing, I can't recommend it enough. Paul posted about The Disaster Artist on Instagram today -- I'd forgotten about it. I'm very excited to see it; the book was quite enjoyable and I'm looking to see how some of the material translates (particularly the last chapter, which basically lays bare Tommy Wisseau's entire persona).

That may be true, but I think female comedians receive an undue amount of criticism and bullshit simply because they are women. In Amy Schumer's case in particular, she has a dedicated crowd of anti-feminist trolls. Here's some of the many recent Reddit threads calling for 1-star reviews (on the Donald Trump forum, natch).

Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 (1987)

When a movie has Clint Howard, you know it's going to be bad/good.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 (1987)

I watched three of these last December and they get crazier and crazier -- the first one is a reasonably tame (for the genre) holiday slasher, but the sequels get into comatose teens with ESP and satanic covens and make about as much sense as Halloween 3. Great flicks is what I'm saying.

    Episode 157.5 - Minisode 157.5

For some reason (like her daring to have political opinions) she is utterly reviled by right wing types, especially the "men's rights" anti-feminist guys on Reddit. The hate is totally crazy and disproportionate to anything she's actually done (which is nothing that I'm aware of). ... Body Parts is pretty nuts, especially once you start thinking about it after it's over. So, Jeff Fahey is some kind of psychologist? They never make it clear; he doesn't have patients except for I guess that one killer, he teaches college level Evil 101, and yet also has a secretary he dictates to? Has anyone that wasn't Agent Cooper ever dictated via cassette to a secretary, let alone a college professor?

What I find most troubling here is the 20 or so waitresses this burger joint has on staff available to serve Superman. Also, just burgers? Not fries and shakes, too? Do I have to *gulp* read this to *chomp* find out?

Also re: ninjas in pop culture, I'm almost certain you can draw a line from Bruce Lee and the kung fu craze of the 1970s to ninjas in the 1980s. While ninjas made an appearance in 1967's You Only Live Twice and Chinese martial arts films were getting badly dubbed into grindhouse theaters, sneaky dudes in black pajamas didn't really explode into popularity in the west until VCRs were available. The direct-to-video market made possible classics like 1980's The Octagon, with Chuck Norris and Lee Van Cleef, and 1981's Enter The Ninja, starring genre stalwart Sho Kusagi, as well as an endless amount of foreign martial arts films from both China and Japan.

    Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997)

Yeah like I said, I'm surprised they haven't done a new MK movie, given how just about anything is green lit these days -- Warner Bros could certainly do worse. Assassin's Creed and Warcraft both got recent movies and did pretty good business overseas, even if they got bad reviews in the US. I honestly had no idea these games were still around! I don't stay on top of newer games at all.

    Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997)

They're still making these games -- the most recent one was just last year and had Freddy, Jason, and the Xenomorph/Alien as playable characters. I suppose that means the franchise is still popular. Supposedly James Wan is attached to a reboot/remake. Surprised it hasn't happened already, this is the kind of film that CGI factories are pumping out these days. Put some MMA fighters in it; get a couple legit Chinese stars (I hear Donnie Yen is popular) and make that sweet international money. It could be made for less than Monster Trucks, I'd bet.
