This reminds me of a story my brother told me. He was in the Navy and made friends with this guy from Wisconsin who had never been outside his home state before; he joined the Navy to "see the world", etc. They're stuck on an aircraft carrier for months after basic training, the whole time this guy is freaking out about the ocean and how big it is and wow it's just like they said. At some point they finally got shore leave in Jacksonville and head for the beach. This guy from Wisconsin sees the waves and runs straight into the water without taking his clothes off or anything. He starts splashing his face and looks dumbfounded for a minute, then starts hooting and hollering, before calling out to my brother, "They weren't kidding! It's really salty!"

Musical Mondays Off-Week 4 (Cakebug Tranch's Pick)
NathanGordon replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Head is a better musical than Across The Universe (I imagine). I like The Monkees more than The Beatles. Cameron is right about me. Other bands that are better than The Beatles: The Kinks, Beach Boys, The Shangri-las, Velvet Underground, Modern Lovers, The Sonics, The Left Banke, Van Dyke Parks, Kevin Ayers, Can, Kraftwerk, Television, The Stooges, Os Mutantes, Black Sabbath, T. Rex, Mott the Hoople, various Smithsonian Folkways recordings, nvm I could do this basically forever. I love Julie Taymor to pieces though, so I'll suffer through this like the bitter contrarian I am.- 287 replies

I don't know anything about this new film, but I just want to cosign on Krisha, that was possibly my favorite film of 2016. I wish there was more room in the Oscars to champion smaller films like it.

Who are these people? Show them to me. I'd watch a zillion trashy Cannon/Globus/etc movies over Surf Ninjas any day of the week. Death Wish 3 rules. My favorite Charles Bronson moment isn't even from a Death Wish film though, it's from a 1974 Richard Fleischer (Tora! Tora! Tora!) movie based on an Elmore Leonard novel called Mr. Majestyk. In it, Bronson plays a gentle watermelon farmer who goes up against the mob. They do not care for his watermelons. *looks like some bozo added in the guy crying sound, but you get the idea.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)
NathanGordon replied to RyanSz's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
They're not doing xXx for a live show until February 11th. The next episode will probably be Surf Ninjas, which was the other half of the Airborne show. Unless you know something I don't? -
He absolutely heard this podcast, are you kidding?

Pretty sure it's Surf Ninjas. https://mobile.twitt...423398682836992 OUR Paul? I can't believe it!

How has no one mentioned the beautiful Rae Dawn Chong? I went to a live MST3K-style riffing of Commando in Portland and it was possibly the most fun I've had at the cinema. What a ridiculous movie! You couldn't make this today, it'd be too laden with irony and winking at the camera (instead of just figuratively doing it).

I thought about this too, because the feel of it is a lot more like television than theatrical. There's weird edits with wipes instead of cuts, the continuity is quite poor at times, there's a lot of secondary characters that disappear (the two girls, the twin hockey players, Mitchell's relatives). The weak plot and incidental nature of the events seem to support this. You could easily edit a hockey episode, an episode where Mitchell goes on a double date, an episode with the race, an episode where Edie McClurg suspects him of using drugs, etc. I felt vindicated that Scott and Kumail were as checked out as I was and were confused about the race "rules".

Nikki from Airborne (Britney Powell) and Mini-Me. Good for him, she's lovely.

It's from early 2014, I think. Just search Onur Turkel + DLM. Basically the dude was just sloppy drunk and aggressively obnoxious, more of an embarrassment to himself than anything. Doug kicked him off during the episode. Maybe not the worst guest ever, but pretty rude and *I* wouldn't invite him back.

Or the kid who was knocked into the water! I've never tried to swim in full clothes, helmet, pads, and rollerblades before, but I imagine that it's pretty difficult.
-
... You've won this round, Cameron. This isn't over. I'll see you... in the rink! (I'll admit I was checked out at the end of this movie.)
-
I mean I figured that out -- I didn't have to watch it twice. But that's 1) a rule, 2) a dumb way to decide a race, and 3) really anticlimactic. Why aren't they hoisting Snake on their shoulders and cheering him? He won the fucking race.
-
So maybe I wasn't paying attention at the beginning of the DEVIL'S BACKBONE (btw they are called "spines") race where they discussed the rules -- wait, did he just say "the only rule is there are no rules "? What kind of race is decided by whoever gets the most across the finish line? I've never heard of that before. When Mitchell was on the freeway and it seemed like he was going to lose, I was thinking him and Jake would have a heart-to-heart and talk about how winning wasn't as important as friends blah blah. Did I miss the part where they talked about Devil's Backbone being a double elimination race?

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
NathanGordon replied to Andrew1326657706's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
YES! Me too. And the camera slides up slowly, hovering over her chest -- so icky! So so dumb. I almost wonder if that boob bounce was CGI, because multiple takes would have hurt! -
The final act went on much too long, about 15 to 20 minutes needed to be excised. It just drained all the fun energy it had built and didn't recover with that "triumphant " ending. I was kind of turned off also because the reveal also makes Paul Dano's character very unsympathetic, which makes the previous hour feel like a bit of a waste. I still really enjoyed it, it was creative and original as hell. I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead too, she's just amazing.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The crazy thing is that the ONLY stakes are if he's going to leave Cincinnati at the end of 6 months. Wait, what? You mean the movie ends without that critical piece of plot??

I was disappointed that Edie McClurg (that name!) was given so little to do, as she is ubiquitous in 80s/90s media as the preeminent Midwestern aunt/nosy neighbor/PTA mom/etc and just kills at that Wisconsin accent. She lights up the few scenes she's in. Shane Mitchell (starring here in his first and only film) is generically pretty in that Jonathan Brandis/Jonathan Taylor Thomas way, like they took a bunch of Tiger Beat issues from 1990 and grew him in a tube. I wanted to smack him, but that had more to do with his terrible mock surfer psuedo spirituality. Did anyone else think while watching this movie, "I really hope there's one of those 'trying on outfits' montages"? And then it was like your prayer had been answered?
-
Yessss, me too. Like, what is this? Can any Midwesterners explain this?
