This is one of those crazy 70s horror films that TCM likes to sneak in their late night schedule. I've seen it twice there in the last year. A great cast that totally commits to its insane plot, but the whole thing is kind of turgid and slow paced in the way horror films from that decade seem now. The last 20 minutes or so with the hospital fight are totally nuts and worth watching.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 3 (Taylor Anne Photo's Choice)

I saw Lawrence at Cinerama maybe 15 years ago and it's in my top 3 theatrical experiences, so I'd say you made the right decision with Lean's masterpiece.- 140 replies

Episode 154 - Highlander II: The Quickening LIVE!

This reminds me of the only Hamlet joke I know -- right as the play starts, just before the guard says the very first line, look to the person next to you and say "knock knock". -
I'll be honest and admit I skipped Mister Fantastic because the marketing made it look like Wes Anderson-lite. I have a real aversion to twee quirk because of that guy. Mortensen is hugely underappreciated though. Michael Shannon was fantastic with that sheriff in Nocturnal Animals, but I think the supporting categories are going to PoC nominees -- it's political this year. If Michelle Williams wins, there's going to be boycotts.

Is this theatrical in any way or can I watch at home?

Calling it now: Best picture: Manchester By The Sea Best director: Chazelle for La La Land Actress: Ruth Negga for Loving Actor: Casey Affleck for Manchester Supporting: Moonlight takes both This is only what I think will win, not necessarily my personal faves. I am pulling for Huppert in Best Actress, because her performance in Elle is lifetime achievement level. Others: La La Land for cinematography, hard to argue with that, technically. Best doc: OJ, probably, given its unusual buzz. The Lobster for best original screenplay? Seems unlikely but it'd be a pleasant surprise. Kind of a bummer that something like Deadpool doesn't get considered -- comedy writing is still seen as Oscar unworthy. Really interesting to see how it's gonna play out after #oscarssowhite last year. Moonlight is a dark horse for Best Picture in my assessment.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 3 (Taylor Anne Photo's Choice)
NathanGordon replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Y'all don't even know about my Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman joint. Been a long time, but from what I remember this was a decent show. It was kinda soapy but more of a mystery of the week show like Murder She Wrote. Hamilton was a NYC reporter, Perlman was the Beast from the subway. It had this cool gothic vision of NYC that was fairly novel at the time. Good makeup, too.- 140 replies

Okay, I'm going to keep track of mine this year! I added a few of you already. http://letterboxd.com/catandbeard/

Based on the trailer it seems like the tone is completely wrong. It looks like your average superhero origin story -- here's a group of teens discovering their powers, "we can jump really far now!", blah blah. Looks like they're taking it way too seriously, which will just suck all the fun out of what could be a really entertaining movie. No Bulk & Skull = not my Power Rangers

It's totally worth watching, you can't accuse it of being boring. All of the art direction, costuming, sets, etc are really interesting -- some people criticize the film because it doesn't look like they think it should, but it's visually compelling. The cast is filled with great actors, some of which appear to be less confused than others. Scene to scene, moment to moment, it's very watchable; it's just clear that there was difficulty with adapting the novel, and that Lynch and the studio had wildly differing visions. Lynch has a small cameo as a spice miner who gets saved from a sandworm.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)

When I read that in the AV Club's review, I couldn't stop from laughing. Is there a more inefficient or expensive way to murder someone? -
xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)
NathanGordon replied to RyanSz's topic in Bad Movie Recommendations
Sweeet. I was holding off but since it's got your approval, I'll go sometime this week. I unabashedly love the first xXx, it's probably the most intentionally stupid movie ever. Literally every single thing in that film seems like it was dreamed by 12-year olds juiced up on Surge, from the character's dumb name to the Rammstein soundtrack to Asia Argento's boobs. The bad guys are named ANARCHY 99, for crying out loud. I don't see why HDTGM wouldn't do this new one, it's pretty much Fast & Furious 7.5. -

Episode 154 - Highlander II: The Quickening LIVE!

@2:00: Ebert: "You know, as a matter of fact, I don't think a zombie would like this film." Siskel: "[incomprehensible drunken slurring]" Ebert: "That's probably why you didn't like it." Meow! Ebert, you catty bitch! -
Nicole Kidman was very good in Nocturnal Animals; her range is limited but she's excellent within it. The film itself got a high rating from me but I didn't like it -- too mean, too punishing to its characters. I recognize the craft but didn't enjoy it. Lots of tension (the long assault scene, yikes) but just not worth it. Great music, I agree. That stood out for me.

Why hasn't Aziz Ansari been on the podcast yet?
NathanGordon replied to Thrillhouse88's topic in How Did This Get Made?
Shit, did he host SNL yesterday? I was busy with politics. -
Krisha -- blew me away, honestly. Well, maybe that's a little hyperbolic, I don't want to oversell it. But I do want other people to see it! My dark horse/golden brick of 2016. A very, very good film, one of the best about addiction's devastating effect on family, maybe the only great one. The Wailing -- fucking gonzo Korean horror, loaded with crazy images and shocks, puts the PG-13 American horror industry to shame and then barfs on it. Absolutely nuts and made with more technical skill than all the dumb franchise sequels released this year. The Lobster -- Lanthimos is undisputably a master filmmaker, a visionary, and a gift to cinema. That said, I enjoyed ALPS and Dogtooth slightly more because I find recognizable Hollywood actors a little distracting. Terrific performances though, Farrell especially. (Good year for him, I thought he was fantastic in True Detective also.) Elle -- Verhoeven applying decades of honed craft to the blackest of socio-sexual thrillers. Huppert is just ridiculously good; if there's a better actress alive, point her out (okay okay Nina Hoss is pretty great). Utterly captivating and UNCOMFORTABLE -- this is the most difficult viewing I can remember in years, Gaspar Noe has nothing on this. Just thinking about it now makes me want to see it again. Best of the year. Honorable mentions which I haven't seen: Chan Wook Park's The Handmaiden, American Honey (I loved Red Road; she is a fascinating filmmaker), Moonlight. Honorable mentions I did see: High Rise (quite something but somehow didn't add up), The Tower (doc of the year), The Witch (real cohesive vision and world, great writing, I just don't think it's gonna have legs, I may be wrong). BEST TV: motherfrickin Westworld!! The OA was beautiful, and Luke Cage was better than any network show in years. Netflix killed it this year. Worst thing I saw in 2016: Cabin Fever - an almost line for line, shot for shot remake that makes Eli Roth's okay 2002 seem worse. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it was somehow much, much worse.

A lot of people from Olympia and Seattle consider themselves dual citizens, but the point is that Portlandia is one and a half jokes that somehow got stretched out to multiple seasons. There's great comedy in PDX (at least, until LA steals it (RIP Ron Funches, Sean Jordan) but it ain't Portlandia.

Episode 154 - Highlander II: The Quickening LIVE!
NathanGordon replied to JulyDiaz's topic in How Did This Get Made?
What bothered me most about this movie was that Sean Connery was from the past and therefore doing these tired ass fish-out-of-water jokes, like "what is a shithead my good man". But Michael Ironside, also from the past, was somehow able to crack oneliners like "Last stop!" when he shouldn't even know what a train schedule is. Also I rewound this scene like twenty times, this dude's delivery is *perfect*. -

He's been on The League, Kroll Show, and NTSF::, it just seems like he's not a podcast guy. Super high profile and in demand, too. And yeah, it did sound like him on the old C&O, though I know it wasn't. -

I watched this a while ago and have almost no recollection of it, beyond the basic "numbers = 9/11" stuff. I was so fascinated by Nic Cage's weird hair that every time he was in the frame, I just focused on his hair. What is going on up there? Just wear a wig, dude!

Yep, that sounds about right. He was probably just off by a few years, that was almost 20 years ago. ... So, anyone know the answer to this puzzle?
