I've brought it up before that I don't know what there would be to talk about in the episode. Shot length, editing and camera angles might not keep people interested. I would listen to that though as I have shot many live performances and am quite opinionated on that. Stop Making Sense is obvious. While Woodstock is definitely worthy of an episode, it's also a documentary about much more than the musical performances themselves. Its as much about those who attended, as well as the cultural upheaval they represented than simply a concert film. I don't think that would make a fair comparison with SMS.

First, scouse is an accent? I had no idea what the Monkees song title Randy Scouse Git meant until this prompted me to look it up! Secondly, yes this movie is great because of its absurd British humor. I am thinking of doing a backyard party with a double feature of Holy Grail and possibly A Hard Day's Night. I just wonder if people would be interested or dismissive.

Can we do Silver Streak next? How about The Taking of Pelham One Two Three? Does that count?

Haven't seen it so I can't comment on it but how about The Iron Lady?

Yes! Love this film!

For anyone having difficulty watching silent films at home, may I ask what you're watching them on? Since buying a projector, I've found them easier to watch. I wonder if large screens in general make it easier. I realize not everyone can afford a big screen or a projector but I couldn't imagine trying to watch this on a computer.

The Exterminating Angel isn't a long version of un Chien Andalou, but just a great feature length film by the same director. I was just questioning why a director with great feature films should have a short film inducted instead.
-
It seems like I would want to say no to short films but Un Chien Andalou does quickly come to mind as a possible canon nominee. But then again why not just discuss the Exterminating Angel instead?

Love Jarmusch. He's a love or hate him I guess. I have friends who can't bear to watch his films Ghost Dog and Dead Man are great but I also wouldn't mind seeing Down By Law nominated.

I thought Fury Road was boring actually. Would The General have been as good without Buster Keaton though? I admire the General for innovating the chase scene. U just thought Fury Road lacked any character build-up. It just felt like watching someone play a video game.

I saw this for the first time earlier this year and i was kind of surprised at how much I liked it. I was never really a fan of early Beatles but liked their later stuff. This was lot better and funnier than I expected.

I love this as an early action comedy. Along with Stagecoach, you can see its influence on modern films like Speed and Fury Road. I was bothered by cheering for a confederate the first tie I saw it. Yes the movie doesn't make it political but I think of the confederacy the same way I would about a movie depicting a nazi stopping an allied plot. Not that it takes away from it being a good movie. It's just weird that Hollywood sympathized with the South. It's beyond me. And of course I voted yes. This is the background and lock screen for my iPhone.

The Harry Potter Films, or at least Prisoner of Azkaban
RobertBoberts replied to Philly Cheesesteak's topic in Movie Suggestions
Martinmaidrite, I feel the same way about the Watchmen movie. I loved the GN but it's attempt to follow it made for a terrible movie. I'm only glad they changed the ending. -
The Harry Potter Films, or at least Prisoner of Azkaban
RobertBoberts replied to Philly Cheesesteak's topic in Movie Suggestions
Same here. No interest in any of these. The first couple Potter films were better than I expected but I lost interest trying to get through Prisoner of Azkaban. Doing a YA versus is bullshit. We should be able to vote against these. -
I would love to hear this discussion. Would it get in? Maybe not. Would I vote for it? Probably.

I agree that a different version of 70's New York plays a huge part in each movie. But I only took the subway while visiting and didn't take a taxi anywhere.
-
I think it deserves a discussion. Haven't seen it in years. I was just thinking about this the other day while visiting NYC and really wishing I had the time to retrace their trip home from the Bronx to Coney Island. There are a ton more obviously Canon-worthy films about NYC, but this is the only one on my mind while traveling through the city.

Blood Simple vs No Country for Old Men
RobertBoberts replied to BrandonKendall's topic in Movie Suggestions
Not going to rank these right now but I have to agree with including Burn After Reading near the top of such a list. It's one of my favorites of theirs. I think maybe Coen fans appreciate it more than the general audiences and it suffered from people expecting another "No Country..." It was actually one of their top grossing films. And unfortunately that seems to be related to the dislike from people unfamiliar with their comedies. -
I brought this up in another thread and perhaps there are a few pairings that may result in a good matchup. The movie parody often gets no respect but there are some that might be considered as good as, if not better than the movie it is parodying. No Epic Movie crap though. And it should be an original movie that was successful on its own, so no Airplane! versus Zero Hour! because the latter wouldn't stand a chance. But perhaps: Top Gun vs. Hot Shots! Walk the Line vs Walk Hard Frankenstein (or Bride of...) vs Young Frankenstein Return of the Jedi vs Spaceballs Would have loved Boyz n the Hood vs Don't be a Menace... Any others?

Wow thanks for going with this. I'll take it! The versus could have been cruel. Glad this will hopefully get some people to watch it for the first time. I recommend it to anyone who thinks silent movies are boring.

When Harry Met Sally vs. Die Hard
RobertBoberts replied to GregSaunders's topic in Movie Suggestions
LOL at the explanation for the dogs versus. Speaking of dogs and Polyester, I'd like a discussion on Pink Flamingoes. -
But that's why it shouldn't be a versus. If people haven't seen it, now they might and would be going in with an open mind as opposed to putting it against an already popular movie. I get the impression that versus episodes are for two very popular movies that are difficult to choose between, while stand alones are more for movies that either are critically acclaimed but lesser known or well known but debatable as to whether it is canon.

This also brings up a question of what holds up better. Parodies often expose the faults of the original but the jokes within those might be too of their time to still be relevant.
-
Fair enough. Personally, I think the parody in those examples is quite close for me, and I think Hot Shots! is better than Top Gun. But that's just me. A Frankenstein versus might be toughest for me though. As for Spaceballs, it's kind of by default to be against Return of the Jedi because the others have been discussed already. And the first two of the trilogy would never lose. But the parody versus the worst of the trilogy (and the ewoks seem like what would have been a parody of wookies) could be interesting to say the least.
