It's just not that good a movie. If it's going to be discussed, maybe it would be a good opportunity for a versus episode that takes an original film and pits it against its parody, in this case Hot Shots!
-
If we must do Tom Cruise in a lead role, then why not Risky Business? But clearly the most canon worthy Cruise film is Magnolia. Maybe Rain Man would be worth discussing. It's one that may be dated in its depiction of autism but seemed groundbreaking at the time.

A little better of a matchup. An Anchorman versus doesn't make any sense. But I don't think any of these are a shoe-in and should just be stand alones. Anchorman is so overrated.
-
Come on let's pit these two comedic masters of silent film against each other. Modern Times vs. The General, perhaps?

For a better insider film-within-a-film, you should check out Truffaut's Day for Night.

Actually they already did a Stiller movie with There's Something About Mary. I don't recall whether it got in the Canon though.

I can't see this getting in. Sure, I like it a lot but it doesn't really stand out much to me. The Royal Tenenbaums is the only possibly canon-worthy Stiller movie that comes to mind.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Human Nature is also an underrated Kaufman film. I wonder how an ESOTSM vs Adaptation episode would turn out. -
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I love Confessions. Kaufman isn't so proud of it. I like it at the very least because they adapted a ridiculous story and had the guts to just roll with it. -
But the 2 parts are exactly what I love about TDH and FMJ. Seeing how war changes a person is what makes the arc of the movie. It's just that it's much more sudden than in most films.

The only thing (modern anyway) that would have been difficult at all would have been vs There Will Be Blood. I don't know if it needs a versus.

Platoon vs Full Metal Jacket would be most difficult for me, but I'd go with Full Metal Jacket.

I would have a hard time voting for any neo-noir when pitted against a classic noir. Would like an episode on Sunset Blvd or the Third Man. As for neo-noir, Chinatown vs. LA Confidential, perhaps? I feel that might cut across generational lines a bit.

I don't think comparisons to the source material should have much bearing on movie analysis. Metaphor is different for a movie in that they are showing, not just telling. I mean, sure Stephen King's The Shining is most likely closer to the source material but that doesn't take away from Kubrick's version.

And I almost cited Frances Ha as seeming to be influenced by Breakfast. I loved Frances Ha.

What I find weird about Rooney' character is how dated a caricature it is. If I hadn't seen old WW2 propaganda cartoons, I'm not sure I would necessarily realize he was supposed to be Japanese. Other than him, I really enjoyed the movie. After breaking up, my ex followed my advice to watch Breakfast at Tiffany's and actually didn't like it. So I guess that's one thing we don't got.

So if it's a no for one racist caricature that contributes nothing to the storyline, I presume Gone With the Wind is definitely a no, as well as Birth of a Nation for obvious reasons. And what is the Searchers doing in the Canon? Should we even discuss Triumph of the Will? I vote yes. And I do have trouble fully enjoying all the above mentioned movies for the racism running through them.

When Harry Met Sally vs. Die Hard

Versus Petey Wheatstraw. -
Definitely influenced by the General, but also by Stagecoach.
-
Agreed. I think Chaplin has a greater overall body of work but the Genersl is still better than any single Chaplin movie.

The Walking Dead versus Breaking Bad. This would be great because just like the Walking Dead, Breaking Bad is not a movie. -

Good point. Of course that's also a movie about a man getting into a situation he is unprepared for. -
Coming To America vs. Trading Places

You may have just changed my mind about where I'd come down on that versus. Never thought of the movie this way. -
Is there something different about the rerelease? My library has had it on Blu ray for awhile.

When Harry Met Sally vs. Die Hard

Life During Wartime versus Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd because they are both sequels or prequels where the stars were replaced with different actors. Or how about American Psycho versus American Psycho 2 because that makes about as much sense as even making that "sequel" in the first place?
