Technique vs Anecdotes? (Please correct me if I'm wrong!)
giblet.kittensoup replied to MegadethOfSuperman's topic in The Canon
I've only been able to finish one episode this season. It seems that it takes around 20 minutes in each episode before Amy and guest start discussing the movie of the week. Add in the lack of agenda and the constant sidebars and I just start losing interest. If this is the direction the show is going, it's Amy's decision, but it's not for me anymore. -
The iron giant should be in the canon

I've seen Iron Giant over a dozen times and I still break down bawling at the end when the Iron Giant says in his Vin Diesel voice: SUUUUUUUUUUUUPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERMAAAAAAAAAN When i first watched it, I thought of my father and his support for me, now I think of my son. I don't watch this movie with friends. No movie has destroyed me in such a fashion. -
I'll echo some other comments This isn't close to being the best of Henson's Muppet films. If you want fantasy Muppet, The Dark Crystal is far superior. If you want Muppets, then I vote for the first Muppet Movie, (even though the remake was REALLY good). Just NO. I won't even bother listening I'm so NO on this one. Have I said no? maybe you guys should lock these homework threads...

I voted no, two reasons: There are better musicals that belong in The Canon instead of this. Musicals where people actually sing. Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but there are no classic musicals in The Canon yet. How this gets in before West Side Story, Singin in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, or many others is beyond me. If we're going to vote on indulgence picks, then I think it should be a vs.episode with the other host picking the vs. movie.

I honestly get sad at the lack of a Dragonslayer Bluray. I saw it several times in the theater when it was released, and you're right about the heavy themes and overall darkness of the film. Very strange at the time for a Disney release. And Vermithrax Perjorative? What a fucking incredible name for the Dragon. just for fun

I'll put out there that there's simply a lack of respect for the genre that has kept low fantasy from getting out of the kids movie and b movie buckets. I will disagree though that Conan is the only good low fantasy movie ever made. Off the top of my head I would add into that list: Good to Excellent: Dragonslayer Excalibur Willow Black Death Passable or at least entertaining. The Sword and the Sorcerer The Beastmaster Solomon Kane <--- one I really like. I don't recall it getting good reviews though. I'm sure I could add more, but I'm sticking with a pretty narrow "Swords and Boards + Wizards and Monsters but no Elves and Dwarves and other silliness" definition.

I'm thinking this:
-
Mongol General: What is best in The Canon? Conan: To crush your vs episode opponent, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their supporters!
-
"Sure, kid, we'll let you fly the plane. First, though, let me strap you to the side of this aircraft carrier so you can scrape off the barnacles with a putty knife"

I just watched this. It's amazing and IMO canon worthy. Unfortunately it's not available for purchase now or most likely ever. It's a film made of films. I'm not bright enough to describe it so here's a good article: http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2014/02/21/if-you-love-movies-you-must-go-see-final-cut-ladies-and-gentlemen YouTube is here: Watch it.

It's a new 2K scan of the interpositive so it should be a better release than the dreck that MGM sent out. Scream/Shout are pretty consistent in the quality of what they put out. Details here: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=18798

I guess we know which way you would vote then

Casablanca - Yeah I Know

I like the vs idea with Bogart movies, I think vs In A Lonely Place(IMO his best performance) would be fantastic. -
Nosferatau (1922) vs. Bram Stokers Dracula (1992). I think the 70 year difference is a nice bonus.

I went with There Will Be Blood. I can watch Boogie Nights in bits and chunks, individual scenes stand out, but I can walk away from the entire narrative at any time. I'm more drawn to the individual pieces in it then the movie as a whole. If I start watching There Will Be Blood I'm in for the duration. I'm sucked in solely by the power of Daniel Day Lewis' performance every time.
