My fervent hope is that the asshat from the other thread who said Zouks is bigoted opened up WTF this morning for a nice relaxing listen and discovered who the guest was. -

Was that the movie with Pink Floyd's 'Echoes' in the soundtrack? -

I strongly suggest you check out the Musical Mondays thread on 'Phantom of the Paradise' once you've seen it - we had the official 'Phantom' historian drop in to the thread to give us the inside scoop. It's an insane, awesome, ridiculous movie. I loved it.- 14 replies

My mind immediately went to Spielberg's Jaws and one of his swimming snacks. And I wondered which I was... -

I got halfway through this trailer and thought 'Oh shit, it's a film adaptation of the musical 'Barnum'': I don't know that musical at all so just assumed the song that was through the trailer was from the show. And then at the end, when I'm expecting it to say 'BARNUM' on the end credits, the real title 'THE GREATEST SHOWMAN' came up and I felt like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIrIvKKT_nk -

I gotta say, Cam, I'm totally thrown off every time I see your signature without quotations from the two most recent films... Ninja Terminator I get, but I thought you would have had something for Phantom! I'm not sure you'll find much ludicrous to quote from the Fantasticks, either, but I could be wrong... -

I remember when these guys just vanished from the radio in 1990 after the scandal hit, and then two years later a radio station started playing their songs as a joke. And while I hated MV when they came out (being a 12 year old boy I hated all things that the girls in my class loved - especially NKOTB), I found myself grooving along to them when I heard them years later. Blame it on the Rain is a classic. Too bad the "Real Milli Vanilli" band were such a bust. -

So we're not EXACT twinsies then. This question is usually the ultimate litmus test... Although looking back over it, it's just a matter of the reversa of Baby and Posh. What does THAT tell us? -

Christina's a way better singer but Britney is a way better performer. I always found their early trading on schoolgirl fetishes pretty gross though, and then their inevitable over-correction into 'Dirrty' was a bit much as well. Britney definitely has the staying power though. -

Marky Mark's mom didn't let him be in NKOTB because he was younger than all the rest and she was worried about him flunking out of school. -

I always thought that on the first day N'Sync was put together, JC Chasez looked around the room and counted them off: Joey? Too beardy. Lance? Too gay. Chris? Too LOL Justin? Too weenie... HOLY SHIT MOM I'M GOING TO BE THE BREAKOUT HEARTTHROB OF THIS BAND! *time passes* What's that now? Timberlake has how many Grammys and Oscar nominations? FML... I mean, who could have seen that coming? Back then, I never would have picked this guy to be one of our generation's biggest studs. -

HOLY JESUS FUCKBALLS IT'S THE FANTASTICKS This was on my long list for my next pick. I saw this show twice at the Sullivan Street Theater in the 41st year of the original New York run. I came very close to directing this play back in Australia but we couldn't get the rights. I performed one of the love duets ('Try to Remember') from this musical with my then-girlfriend (now wife) in a musical theatre class at university. I have the poster for the Fantasticks currently framed on my living room wall. I have four different CD soundtracks of this show, and at least three different book-copies of the script. I once gave a conference paper on the stage at the Snapple Theater Center in New York, where the show played until THREE WEEKS AGO (that's spooky). This movie adaptation is a disgrace and shits all over the legacy of the play. BUT. I'm so glad we're covering it! The original show had a white character dressed like a red Indian and a whole section called the 'Rape Ballet'. Young Jerry Orbach was the original El Gallo! Young Liza Minnelli was the original Luisa! This remains the longest continually-running show in New York history (42 years, 17,000+ performances). I WILL HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY THANK YOU EVR! -

Well, I think this is a first in Musical Mondays history, to get a post from a eulogist at the film's lead character's funeral! Wow! Definitely the best insider perspective we've had yet, and, I'd suggest, way more interesting than anything Blake J Harris comes up with. Hopefully we haven't been too mean about this movie that you love - I think most of us had either heard of this but few had seen it, so it was a real surprise when we finally got to it. The tone of the movie is so over the top and committed that it definitely bears out repeat viewings and cult status, and as I've said, I'll take 'Phantom' over 'Tommy' or 'Rocky Horror' anyday. I'm really glad that our serendipitous linking to your excellent archive led us to this excellent piece of insider information!
