Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

Agreed, it wasn't exactly La Boheme (that was Rent). But the Troma-style shock elements of tearing out organs and leeringly indulging Paris Hilton and her brothers really handicapped the film. And Alexa Vega et al couldn't really sing the material. I guess it's like wondering what Moulin Rouge! would have been like if the two leads were actual singers and not just actors who sing sometimes (note: that's fully one of my favourite movies, no diss there). There were enough catchy things in a few (not many, but a few) of the songs to keep me watching. The things that made me switch off were mostly the visuals and gratuitous shock-gore and the CGI sets. I wonder, if someone started with the music and rebooted from scratch with a big budget, if it would make a difference. I'm trying to find a foothold for a positive entry into this film rather than the entire thread being all,

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

I know you're mostly joking, but I really, really do wonder what this would have been like if it was performed by an actual opera company. It's still horrifying and the subject matter is difficult, but if we were able to get past the mediocrity of some of the performances by having really world-class performers, I really wonder if it would have worked. And yes, I'm aware that Sarah Brightman is by definition a world-class performer. I mean amazing performers T to B. Basically, I'm saying I'd like to see Baz Luhrmann's production of this script at the Met.

Musical Mondays Week 11 Repo! the Genetic Opera

Okay, I'll start us off, and point you all to a resource that might fill out some of your knowledge about Repo! (thanks, Repo!) - the always useful Repo!pedia - http://repopedia.freewiki.in/index.php/Main_Page I've searched a bit for evidence of the stage play that this film was based on, but there's not much around. I would have thought that the cult status of the film might have seen lots of revivals, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
  4. Aw, bless.
  5. Now that you've caught up, enjoy joining in on the Corrections and Omissions each week! I went through from beginning to end too, and caught up last year in September, which meant I could then start watching the movies and contributing. Join in!

    Musical Mondays Off-Week 10 (Ellenmc's Pick)

Hearing the buzz so far around the water cooler, Ellen... it might be a tough week ahead. All catastrophic film demolition is done with love.
  7. Not yet. If it be now, 'tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come. The readiness is all. Since no man has aught of what he leaves, what is't to leave betimes? Let be.
  8. It was Sharpay and Ryan's version - much peppier. This thing is catchy as fuck. Gotta say, Jammer, this is the pick that keeps on giving.
  9. Guys, this is becoming a problem. Yesterday a HSM song (What I've Been Looking For) came up on my iTunes on random, and I... let it play through. And quite enjoyed it. And woke up this morning humming it. And played it for my kids who danced around and loved it. I think I... might quite like HSM now.

Wow, Max, it's no burden at all. There are more important things in this world (like, SO MANY MORE ) than Repo... Take care of yourself, stay safe, let us know how you're going.

    Musical Mondays Off-Week 10 (Ellenmc's Pick)

Just started watching this. A four minute world-creating animated expository open? That's a bold choice, filmmakers. Nice pick, Ellen, I think we'll have PLENTY to talk about. For the first time in a while this feels like it could be a crossover ep between MM and the main podcast.

    The Postman (1997)

Here's a funny story. Years ago, an editor friend of mine was posting on Facebook, talking about the worst movie he'd ever seen, and his friends were chiming in about terrible things that they'd seen, and someone mentioned 'Waterworld'. I posted to say that it wasn't nearly as bad as 'The Postman', which started out as something interesting and devolved into a long-winded mess. My editor friend immediately private messaged me to ask me what my fucking problem was. Confused, I checked the thread, and the guy who'd posted about 'Waterworld' was... David Brin, author of 'The Postman', and so it looked like my response was designed to tear him down and make fun of an adaptation that he was very sensitive about. What are the odds, eh?
  16. If we did that, he'd have to delete all the posts in the 'Can't Stop the Music' thread that have nothing to do with that episode. That'd take care of, oh, two hundred posts. We absolutely came by this record honestly: 95% of our posts were all about HSM.
  17. Okay guys, I'm exhausted from trying to haul the twitching corpse of this thread over the Village People. Time to go flake out for a bit. Congrats on our big win! Scheer, if you're lurking, you could do us all a big favour and congratulate us on the biggest thread ever, in the next mini. Just sayin.
  18. Ha ha! Nice! I guest taught at the U of A in Tucson for a little bit a few years ago, in the theatre department, and worked on a play at the observatory there. Bear down!
  19. FIVE SIX ONE! FIVE SIX ONE! FIVE SIX ONE!
  20. Hey, Kate! Just realised that if you're in Arizona... Are you a Wildcat?!?! What team! BEAR DOWN!
