Musical Mondays Week 10 High School Musical 1 & 2...maybe 3
Cakebug Tranch replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
I think part of the issue is that Sharpay is unwilling to share the spotlight, and sees Troybriella as a threat to their dominance of the school. If Sharpay went, 'oh nice, our musical will be even better now with these two talented people', there's not much conflict to work off. Most interesting from this: given that this movie is set in the protagonists' junior year (given that number 2 is the following summer and number three is subtitled 'senior year'), WHERE ARE ALL THE SENIORS IN THIS MOVIE? Why is there no fuss over graduating students? Why are there no older students in the musical? Why are there no older students in the basketball team? In number 3, there are younger students (a basketball player, 'Rocketman', and an aspiring musical theatre girl, 'Tiara Gold' - oof to both names) who aspire to take the place of Troy and Sharpay after the older guys graduate. Why are there no older students in this movie? It seems like the juniors run the place. -

Yesss team Zeke! It's really interesting that Zeke's revelation in 'Stick to the Status Quo' is, as you say, followed by him saying 'i don't care, I bake, live with it'. In the same song, Martha ('I love hip hop') is shunned by her nerd pals for loving to dance, but in HSM 3 Martha is head cheerleader (big props to the series for the plus size cheerleader!), so the message of the song is ignored at all sides. Not sure we get more of a payoff from the burnout cello player. It's just interesting that the overriding message (stay in your lane) is immediately ignored (as opposed to the conventional approach which is a message song about 'be your own person'). -

Also, will anyone be bummed if spoilers from HSM 2 and 3 come up in our discussions? I watched all three on the weekend so I'm pretty sure I'll be referring to things that happen later sometimes. Can I assume that no one here is going to be mad, like that one guy who hasn't seen 'Inception' yet and doesn't want anyone to spoil it? -

No, no, I said NOT as a couple. They don't get together ever. I just really like both those characters, so they're 4 me 4 lyf. Zeke gets together with Sharpay and Kelci with Ryan, who is going to have a fabulous awakening at university and send Kelci regretful 2am emails about breaking her heart. -

I have a heap to say about this movie but in a rush now so will hold off on getting in deep right now. All I wanted to stay, right off: Kelci + Zeke 4 lyf (not as a couple, just as my favourite characters by far) -
At the risk of saying something unpopular, I'm just going to put this out there. The log line for this podcast is 'Have you ever seen a movie that's so bad that it's amazing?' I can totally understand why 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise got into the rotation years ago, because earlier on it was teetering on the edge of 'bad but amazing' territory. But more recently, the franchise has started to take itself way more seriously, and is all about creating product that would be more properly described as 'great and amazing', with the budgets, casts, and effects bigger than perhaps any other franchise in history. There are a LOT of 'Fast and Furious' fans in this forum, and I think you're all great. I have NO problem with these movies as such, but it gets to the point where this doesn't really fit into the tone of the podcast, aside from the fact that the hosts are fans of the series. Because, when we ask the simple question: 'Fate of the Furious': How did this get made? We have a simple answer: it got made because the previous several movies in the series are smash hits that made a billion dollars each. And while that's great, it's not really the point of this podcast, is it? I thought it was about watching lousy movies and making fun of their inconsistencies (see: 'The Lake House') and not so much about watching popular movies and discussing how great they were. There's plenty of other podcasts out there for that. Anyway, that's what I think. This should in no way be read as an anti-'Fate of the Furious' post, but I know I have no interest in spending fifteen bucks to see it just to participate in forum. I just don't see how these movies fit in to the mission statement of the podcast anymore. Dissent: go!

God I love that Simpsons episode. RosenCarl and GuildenLenny poisoning each other with a high five. Genius. -

I don't want to marry Adam Scott, but he is my Future Best Friend. So I'll be the bad influence that you resent who's always keeping him from coming home early. Works for me.

Because really, in the end, with the both of you,

Sidebar from my PFT-feud with tom to say that I just got to the part in the mini where Paul says he'll always play an Explanation Hope from any Australians. My goal in life now is to get an Explanation Hope on the mini, where I only identify myself as CakeBug Tranch, and use my accent and place of birth as my entry point. You made a promise, Paul! Let's see if you'll keep it!

Musical Mondays Off-Week 9 (JammerLea's Pick)

I work as a dramaturg, so most of my work is trimming Shakespeare to a manageable length, depending on what the company needs. I've done a 45 minute 'Othello' and a 45 minute 'Titus', as well as a 90 minute 'King Lear' and 100 minute 'Hamlet' - those last two were challenges... 45 minutes is a tough slot to fill: the shortest I've done a 'Romeo' is about 100 minutes - but then again, Shakespeare tells us right in the prologue of that one just how long he thinks the play should be... -
I haven't listened to it either! In fact, I'm still catching up on listening to the Lake House episode itself - 20 mins to go. I was just joining in on telling stories...

My favourite 'talking in a cinema' moment was after Synecdoche, New York, which is totally self-indulgent and unnecessarily complicated but also pretty fun for the most part. But after the final moment, the soundtrack goes silent, and on the screen says 'Written and Directed by Charlie Kaufman', and in that moment of silence, a woman two rows in front of me - she must have been in her seventies - turned to her friend and said, very loudly, Perfect.

Musical Mondays Off-Week 9 (JammerLea's Pick)
Cakebug Tranch replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Guys. My wife just realised that she has the High School Music sheet music, so after pleas from my children, she is now playing it on the piano and singing High School Musical, which my children are dancing around to unironically. Damn you Jammer! ETA: The gif game in this movie is strong. Even stronger than Across the Universe, I'd suggest...- 76 replies

Musical Mondays Off-Week 9 (JammerLea's Pick)
Cakebug Tranch replied to Cameron H.'s topic in How Did This Get Made?
Can't believe I never got around to answering this question! My wife saw this post and said 'it's the question you've been waiting your whole life to answer!' It won't surprise anyone when I say i was heavy into theatre at high school - started youth theatre when I was 12 and carried it on all the way through high school, until in my final year I was Captain of Drama (private boys' schools make such things a thing). At high school and just after I performed in a stack of musicals - 'Guys and Dolls' (Nathan Detroit), 'Hello Dolly!' (Barnaby), Fiddler on the Roof (Perchik), The Mikado (Ko-Ko), The Matchgirls (Joe), Sweeney Todd (understudy to Sweeney), South Pacific (Lt. Cable), and Guys and Dolls (for a second time, this time as Benny Southstreet). I played saxophone in the school band all the way through high school too, in the concert and jazz bands. And I played Varsity rugby just to balance it all out! Honestly, going to a boys' school, the arts were the only way to meet girls (we'd merge with the girls' schools for productions) so that was a major motivation, but I found I was good at it so enjoyed the process. My experience in terms of mixing rugby and theatre, though, was JUST like Troy Bolton's (except without the inspirational moment where the jocks realise they're a pack of assholes)... Anyway, I showed them by acting professionally for ten years and getting a theatre PhD and working as a theatre professor, ALL THE WHILE continuing to play rugby. Suck it, compartmentalizers! -
