    Musical Mondays Off-Week 6 (Quasar Sniffer's Pick)

This made me laugh so irrationally hard just now.

Yup. Yup. Yup. That's me. Although I always read them. Just pile them up in the order I'll read 'em in, and then I return them to the very highly anally catalogued bookshelves, organised by genre and author, and catalogued in my phone.

As a professor of literature and drama, I'm astonishingly ashamed to say that I had never even heard of him before you made the reco. I'll add it to the reading pile (although I counted last night - I currently have THIRTEEN books in my bedside table reading queue. It's getting out of hand.) What are you all reading right now? I'm reading this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/Off-Map-Invisible-Forgotten-Islands/1781312575 - it's SO good. And then 12 other books, plus 'Fool'. Oy.

Phew so glad no one else liked The World's End either. I was hedging my bets but, it appears, there was no need...

Sorry, I totally feel like I should do a patented Fister apology for being a grumpy bugger. Hopefully Scheer doesn't come on here to throw his support behind Brode. I'm sure there are better ones I can recommend. Speaking of recommendations, Cameron - my copy of 'Fool' arrived today!

I loved the premise a lot more than the film. It felt dirty to me to dislike Simon Pegg the way that 'The World's End' makes you dislike him. (I'm pretty sure the Hot Fuzz 'Romeo and Juliet' bit made it into my now-ubiquitous 'quoting Shakespeare' article...)

(sorry) That Douglas Brode book is widely discredited in the field now: it's really badly researched and written like a nine year old with fingerpaint. I kinda... hate it. (sorry) He for realz refers to Shakespeare as 'Gentle Will' on most occasions. I have to hook you up with a better Shakespeare on film text, I think, Jam.

(also, kateacola, I keep meaning to say how much I love your avatar - transports me back to that 'Hot Fuzz' 'Romeo and Juliet' every time and it never fails to make me laugh)

Absolutely agreed. If HDTGM Origin Stories gets its own podcast, your awesome Naming posts definitely deserve their own segment. Are you reading this Paul?

Amazing work Jam! Although I must admit being slightly disappointed when I scrolled to the bottom of the pic and found he wasn't standing on a surfboard made of solid timber. Such great work!

Thanks! I abandoned this article a couple of years ago after doing all that data crunching, but posting it here has me thinking I need to overhaul it and get it out there.

"Juliet is a Capulet! The Montagues and Capulets are mortal enemies" SPOILER: Shakespeare didn't write that line. God I hate this movie. Fuck it. Here's a bunch of stuff from my article on the way the text was handled. SKIP THIS IF YOU'RE NOT A GEEK.

(I'm mostly joking about 'far superior', Tromeo is 99% horrifying but at least it knows what it is.)

Capulet. Seriously, I would be happier recommending you watch Tromeo and Juliet rather than this one. Compare trailers and tell me you disagree. First, Carlo Carlei's version: HASHTAG FORBIDDEN LOVE Now, the far superior Tromeo...

Serious question: did Damian Lewis channel his experience as Mr. Grey when playing Capulet? I vote yes.

YESSSSSSSSSS Taylor I love you. Those are perhaps my two least favourite versions as well - I have an article in process about the awful butchery that Julian Fellowes did on the most recent Romeo and Juliet, in his awful treatment of the script. I also have another one that I abandoned long ago about how problematic it is to show Benedick doing the walk of shame from Beatrice as a prologue to Whedon's 'Much Ado', and what the issue of sexual consummation does to the narrative. Might be time to revisit those projects, maybe... Here's the beginning of the Much Ado one.

The second best film adaptation of that play!

Shakespeare talk! Now you're on my wavelength! When do we start ShakespeareFilm Sundays? ETA: Entirely irrelevant, but Michael York in Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet has this additional line that's kind of jammed in to the script, that has nothing to do with R+J, one of several such interpolations. He says "now, hie thee home, fragment" to Benvolio during the duel, which is more likely a quotation from Coriolanus. It's not the only such addition: at one point, Pat Heywood, who plays the nurse, calls Mercutio a 'punk rampant', from an obscure John Marston play. Fuck it, I'm just going to quote from my article on it (the quoting Shakespeare in film chapter I keep referring to)... Seriously dudes, I have a Shakespeare contact high right now.

Don't forget that the Beach Boys had a huge bounceback in the early 1990's, and were cool for a while - including a big hit with 'Kokomo' and a bump from their using John Stamos as their drummer. If anything, all of these Beach Boys references are more on point than the Van Halen reference in Surf Ninjas: totally tapping into a weird retro surfer zeitgeist that was around for a couple years in the early 90's. As per Wiki:

Hey Jam can you make me a CakeBug avata... No really, there's no expectation at all - you're awesome and you shouldn't stress! (totally joking about the above, if that's not clear). Get some rest!
