I'm slightly worried that everyone will go, "oh, THAT movie, sure okay, whatever you say bro". It's definitely not garbage, but definitely not perfect either. It's a love it or hate it I think. We'll see!- 169 replies

I'm genuinely tempted to comment on his instagram that he shouldn't listen. Just keep the warm happy feelings of Mitchell Goosen locked up tight and away from every time anyone on the podcast says "fuck that kid".
-
It's strangely unnerving to be able to type a name into google and find Shane McDermott's (Mitchell Goosen's) cell phone number, but there he is, selling real estate and his art in Texas. Good for him. The thing I wanted to point out about this was in his Instagram bio: https://www.instagram.com/sfmcdermott/ Notice anything familiar? Doesn't look like he's let go of the grand lessons Pepe the shark have taught him, to this day! Also - he looks like a very nice family man now. I pray to God he didn't hear the podcast, because that was mostly brutal.

Okay, much like tomspanks, I also took notes, like some kind of live show nerd. I would type them all up now, but my notebook's juuust out of reach, so I'll lead off with one thing I noticed that both dates and places the film. The hockey playing twins spend all of their time in hockey jerseys - the only figures who actually wear hockey-specific shirts, if I recall - and the costume designer did a bang-up job of figuring out what a hockey kid would wear in Cincinnati in 1993. Both of them are wearing jerseys from the Cincinnati Cyclones, an International League team whose most recent iteration now plays in the ECHL. Here's a picture of the boys in their shirts. As you can see, the Cyclones jerseys are fairly memorable, but most importantly, they were only worn by Cincinnati for one season - the 1992/93 season. So, the team was new in town and the costumer stuck the twins in Cyclones jerseys, which were immediately voted as having the worst logo in all of hockey, voted on by The Hockey News. As a result, the Cyclones immediately flipped their logo into one that didn't look like Jason Voorhees caught in a high wind, and, of course, opted for an anthopomorphised cyclone with a stick, missing teeth. Go to the authoritative sportslogos.net for more information: http://www.sportslog...93/Primary_Logo What I find coolest about this is that it gives us a definitive date and location for this film, all based on the prominent use of two jerseys featuring a failed logo. EDIT: Ooh! And I'm just noticing! In the pic above, they're wearing Cyclones sweatshirts, whereas at school, they're wearing Cyclones hockey jerseys. So, I guess they had a range of stuff for them from the same team store. Also: MOST TWINS DON'T DRESS ALIKE, MOVIE. Particularly not in their teens. I have way more notes but meh, it's a long week.

Musical Mondays-Week 4-Beauty and the Beast

It's tricky when you pick something that's universally agreed to be something good, with a good take on a beloved story, with great music and reminiscences of our childhoods. It was a great pick, Taylor. Which is why, in the spirit of this site, I am picking something that's not quite as repellent as Tommy, but nowhere near as easy to agree on as Beauty and the Beast. Stay tuned.- 169 replies

When Blaine says at the top of the race that the only rule is that there are no rules (except this one rule) I was surprised to see the Prep guys say "Oh sweet, that means we're allowed to straight-up attempt murder!" Like, how important is this race that these seventeen year old kids are going down a death drop at ninety miles an hour and they think "hey, I'll hip check that kid into the guard rail almost certainly leading to his death and likely my own"? I can kind of forgive the moments when the boys slide under the tanker truck and when that one prep fully gets run over, but these attempts at first-degree murder where even the slightest trip would lead to a broken corpse cartwheeling down the hill: that was a bit much, in my mind.

There's a graduate thesis to be written on this subject: I propose a working title of "A progressive taxonomy of naming conventions for twentieth-century cinema villains". No, seriously. Name your child Blaine, you know he'll grow up to be the worst. IMDb supports the theory: http://www.imdb.com/...ef_=fn_al_ch_mr

Right after heartlessly dispatching their mutual rival over a guardrail and into a river.

Add to that Mitchell needs to learn that his 'hey, chill out bro' attitude, which might be effective in its pacifist nature, pulls him out of truly interacting with people around him and marks him as a flake. He insults the bullies and walks away which paints him as a target, he barely participates in the ice hockey game even though (based on his ball hockey skills) he could very well have done well, and when he's threatened he is cocky to the point of infuriating everyone he comes across. It's not until he realises that if he stays in his box as the cool Californian guy that he's not truly living the life he could be living in Cincinnati. He finds a nice middle ground between the laid back surfer and the more up-front style of the other kids, and grows as a result, but never loses his sense of self. There's a nice growth theme throughout this movie which I liked. The only troubling thing was when he declared that he needed to put up with these kids for three more months, and then he's gone, and Nikki reacts (understandably) badly, but he never addresses that, and, presumably, he'll cut bait not long after conquering Devil's Backbone. I wonder what Mitchell would look like in 'Airborne 2' with his Cincinnati skills adjusting to Californian life again...
-
The ONLY thing missing from that montage was a moment at the end where Mitchell stood and applauded at the perfect selection, a la 'Pretty Woman' and 'Dumb and Dumber'.
-
On the fence about whether you're interested in seeing 'Airborne'? Never fear, I watched this morning and summed up my thoughts over at letterboxd. There's no real spoilers.. http://letterboxd.com/shaksper/film/airborne/

Ooh, and Casper mattress logo in the background. HDTGM sponsor plug!

Were you using the Springfield Springfield transcription site? I tried that for my signature, but it claimed the parents were going to study 'Australian bats'.
-
Yeah. First thought: they totally have schools in Australia.

Nah, broheim, when I said 'quality', I was questioning whether it'd be totally tubular or epically bodacious.
