  1. This may be a blasphemous thing I'm saying, and out me as being not nearly up enough on the American film catalogue, but how's 'The World According to Garp'? I've never seen it, but I read the book last year. Garp is such an insufferable tool in that thing, and the story is so painful in so many ways, that when i heard that John Lithgow plays Roberta Muldoon (voiced, in my head, as Paul F. Tompkins-style GoGo), I thought that might be one to give a wide, wide berth. I loved 'Cocoon' when I was a kid. One of those movies it seemed we rented three times a year, but really it's about old people mooching youth off giant eggs.
  2. I take it as a 'probably'.
  3. I was very much in love with Belinda in the 80's but I have to agree with the Jane comments. Belinda always seemed too fussy. Jane, however - take her to the mall and just wait for an aerobics class to bust out!
  4. Is it just me or are 90% of that Beast's 'ugliness' self-inflicted? That Beast has spent hundreds of dollars on tattoos and all he gets for it is a pity shag from the High School Musical girl? Lame.
  5. I'm 99% sure that in the source material, the Beast was so called because he had minor cosmetic facial scars from a rec league hockey game and rave contact lenses. This one is legit.

Episode 154 - Highlander II: The Quickening LIVE!

'Meet Dave' was nominated for two Razzies, and if you listen to the episode of 'I Was There Too' on that film, a 'part' of Paul is in that film (his elbow, I think, after they recast his role with the video playback guy).
  7. I don't know guys, I just watched the opening credits and it's way different to how I remember...

    Paywall Special Announcement

I found it through the episode of 'I Was There Too' that Paul was on, to talk about 'Meet Dave'. I've been playing catch-up for years. The back catalogue was crucial to that (and if not for my determination to catch up all the way, I would have been annoying you all here years ago. Small blessings!). I'm just glad I caught up soon enough - I wasn't so lucky when it came to CBB...

    Paywall Special Announcement

Just listened to the episode now and was blown away by how hard they've worked to make this work - the 25 episode rotation essentially means you'll always catch every old ep, and the chance to vote on our favourites means everyone will have a chance to hear what they want. The 'behind the wall' specials will, I assume, be posted about here in the forum, meaning that non-subscribers will get a chance to read the teaser and maybe decide on the strength of that to come on board. Thank you to Paul and the team for all the hard work making this happen. You provide so much joy for (next to) nothing and I hope your anxiety over the transition is abating today.

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

Hey! Not to jump on to a new topic of conversation too fast, but can we flag the fact that Tommy, per the song 'Pinball Wizard', "Plays By Sense of Smell"? How's that work? Exactly?

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

From Professor Wikipedia: The lyrics are written from the perspective of a pinball champion, called "Local Lad" in the Tommy libretto book, astounded by the skills of the opera's eponymous main character, Tommy Walker: "What makes him so good?; He ain't got no distractions; Can't hear those buzzers and bells; Don't see lights a flashin'; Plays by sense of smell.; Always has a replay; Never tilts at all; That deaf dumb and blind kid; Sure plays a mean pin ball.", and "I thought I was the Bally table king, but I just handed my pinball crown to him".

Not according to IMDb! Elton's credited as the Pinball Wizard. Maybe it should be 'Pinball Wizard/Former Pinball Wizard after that one song'

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

Okay, so when I was on IMDb trying to figure out who the creepy guy with the eyebrows in the strip club booth was, I noticed some stuff. So, we have already covered how Keith Moon plays Uncle Ernie, and the less said about that is likely for the best. Uncle Ernie shows up a couple of times (he comes to Tommy's Camp at the end) so we'll discount those moments. But there's a weird meta moment in the Church scene, where Eric Clapton appears, not as himself, but as The Preacher, doing his Eric Clapton thing but in character, in service of the story. Fine. This is something that would be, incidentally, perfected not five years later in The Blues Brothers (contemporary blues stars playing roles but really just playing themselves). But, in the same church scene, Pete Townshend and John Entwhistle appear with their instruments, essentially working for The Church as deacons (?!) and playing to accompany the Preacher's stuff. Later, the same thing happens when Elton John appears as The Pinball Wizard (wait WHAT? isn't TOMMY the pinball wizard? Or is whoever wears that toque with a ball on it the PW?), in his awesome shoes, and the Who essentially perform as themselves to backup the duel scene. Later again, the Who all appear in Tommy's Camp, performing with their instruments (or do they? I'm only remembering Keith Moon so maybe it's Uncle Ernie). Point is, Entwhistle and Townshend (boo, hiss) are credited on IMDb as 'himself', while Moon and Daltry are only credited as their characters. So, we have the set up that The Who exist in this world and play to support the things that are happening - and that Uncle Ernie and Tommy happen to be part of the band. Surely this fractures the continuity of the world if The Who exist here? Also, it's notable that director Ken Russell has an uncredited role as 'Cripple'. Ten bucks to the first person who finds Ken in the Tommy's Camp scene.

Great, now I feel even ickier about the whole thing. The guy in the booth (see the imgur link) seemed to know Frank pretty well. I didn't watch the whole thing through again just to get that screengrab, but they seemed... acquainted. http://imgur.com/bU474p5

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

Maybe I wasn't watching carefully enough but I figured that the 'strip club' was the old 'rite-of-passage' cliche of an older man taking a younger man to lose his virginity, but in this case he sent him in to the Acid Queen. I associated this with a brothel setting, but I was likely just not listening carefully. The impression I got was that this was a place that Frank felt comfortable, though, and he seemed like the kind of man who would have his home life and his brothel life in balance...

I got the impression it was the brothel that Frank himself frequented as a client.

Hey, you know who's not the worst? Cameron H.! I'm just posting this publicly to express my appreciation for Cameron and the excellent feedback he's given me on the new play I'm writing. I've also thanked him by email, but I feel like I want the community to be aware that his generosity and support isn't limited to the forum. Thanks, Cameron H.!

In his defence, I'm pretty sure he was doing it while wearing a tin-foil hat. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/music-news/9572773/Pete-Townshend-I-paid-for-child-porn-to-prove-British-banks-were-channelling-sex-ring-cash.html Also: he's the worst.

    Episode 153.5 - Minisode 153.5

Never heard of them - I listened to the song because I thought maybe I'd know the track but not the band, but nope, nothing. That's not saying much though - Australia is an island in more than one way. 1994 I was 16, but mostly Australian music on the radio around then.

    Musical Mondays--Week 3--Tommy

And just to unnecessarily post for the third time in a row, but I'll say it because I just remembered: One image that's stayed with me, that I really liked, was the heavy-handed but impactful image of the women working in the bomb-making factory, filling the bombs with ball-bearings that, we assume, after the war, will be used less for maiming soldiers on the battlefield and more for filling the need of the pinball industry. I liked that.
